My favorite begins episode always makes me cry, now re watching and looking back, it was very well written, all of the call backs that we've seen so far with Tanya being incorporated, the real life event of the Rodney King riots that happened in LA that they showed on the TV in the scene with Athena and her mom, its real footage from 1992. The comment where one officer said don't shoot anyone before the 90s was a hint to what would take place during that event in 92 where there were significant increase in violence and death because of the riots. Also, the episode just feels like it was handled with so much care and that's because Angela was involved in the process. All the begins episodes previously was directed by the same person, Jennifer Lynch, however this episode was directed by one of Angela's best friends, Tasha Smith. She also made sure that Angela was involved in the casting of the young version of her and I think they selected the perfect actress, the energy that she brings to Athena is what I see when I think of young Athena. I love how Tasha directed certain scenes, like the back and forth between older & younger Athena, so emotional. I also agree with you, a lot of the times backstories can feel made up (and yes of course they are, it's fiction) but this one just makes sense, the writers definitely worked backwards on Athena as a character, to find where she started from. And the ending scene...... every time I re-watch I either just ugly cry or I have to skip it entirely, its too much. I just love how Bobby catches her, her trying to push him away but he pulled her right back in. Angela Bassett, amazing actress but we already know that. Edit: I also agree that it's great to get an Athena episode because sometimes she can get separated from the story, its also interesting that it happens because this entire show was created for Angela in the first place by Ryan Murphy, the idea of the show was "People want to see Angela Bassett in a cop uniform", I don't even think firefighters was apart of the original thought/plan but they eventually added it. Just getting her to agree to do this show is a big deal, making her EP (also on the spinoffs aswell), but by having mutiple departments of first responders, even though they work long hours for months, she's not fully trapped, and sometimes is able to get other projects done as well. I appreciate that she is dedicated to this show and brings her all every time. Like Oliver Stark (Buck) says, she's not just a celebrity, she's a REAL actor, never make the other actors feel below her and she has no ego.

My God. Those last 5 minutes really hit me so hard. Emmett's mum crying and Athena breaking down had me sobbing. Full on snot. Amazing Begins episode. 9-1-1...man, they KNOW what they're doing.

Wait that is some CRAZY show lore that I had no idea about lmao. Angela Bassett is just an incredible actor all round, like you said her attitude alone is amazing to hear, let alone her just being a straight up boss at her job!
