Michael's actor refused to get the Covid vaccine, so they wrote him off the show this way. I think they did this instead of killing him off so that he could potentially come back, but so far he has not. They mention him in universe but you don't actually see him after this episode.

Also, fun fact, he sued them after this for like, making the vaccine a requirement bc he claimed religious exemption (his "church" doesn't believe in any modern medicine or intervention, except chiropractors. Fell down a rabbit hole researching them and it's a lotttt) but he lost. It was a whole thing.
