What an unexpected but VERY much welcomed episode. Such a beautiful story that, while ending on a rough note, I PRAY we see a happy ending for!

It’s probably too nuanced a topic to properly convey in a Patreon comment, but re: the Scott/Shane friendship, it’s not really expected for players on different teams to genuinely hate each other. Usually cross-team friendships come about because guys played on the same team at some point, whether in the NHL or juniors or something, so it’s a little unusual that Scott and Shane are all buddy-buddy without that overlap, but not crazy. It’s small community and many players get moved around a lot so everyone sort of knows everyone. Ilya and Shane are a bit different from two random players because Montreal and Boston have a huge rivalry and they’ve played for those teams their entire careers. Even though often rivalries are more about fans hating each other than genuine antagonism between players, for the two superstars and captains that have been pitted against each other their whole careers people will assume that there’s legitimate dislike there. And to a certain extent expected to at least pay lip service to the antagonism as a sign of respect to the fan bases. Ilya is also the kind of player who would draw a lot of dislike (“pest” aka shit stirrer) plus he got drafted first over Shane so I’m sure people really think they loathe each other.

The author of all the books, Rachel, was involved in the making of the show but ultimately the show’s creator, Jacob, was the one in charge. He wrote the scripts and directed using his own vision for the show but she was consulted and gave her own opinions during making.

The wait each week for the final 3 episodes is going to be rough! Can’t wait!

Olivia

so so glad you loved this episode - scott is my favourite character from the book series so i love the way françois plays him and the way the relationship between him and kip is shown here!!

Halftime. Thank you for your reaction. But I agree with another coment above. Waiting 1 Week every time between episodes, will be so rough, and it wil be more nerve-racking every week. And to be honest I'm wondering if Harrys Reaction will also be longer every time. Just like the empty netter one.😂 But I would love that.

Elina

Thank you for your reaction! Can't wait for the next one

The NHL as a whole is notoriously problematic. This is too complicated a topic to get into with much detail here, but the league has a very complicated history both with women and with the lgbtq+ community, and any public efforts they’ve made in recent months/years to address these issues have only come across as performative at best. Obviously I can’t get into all the nuances here but a few quick things: —There have been a number of issues over the years with players who have been accused of SA or physical violence against female partners, spouses, etc. But one of the most egregious and disturbing cases was the one that happened in Canada recently with a group of junior hockey teammates who were tried and acquitted of heinous SA charges (I won’t go into details here). Despite the overwhelming evidence, not only were they acquitted, but they’re no longer suspended and can continue their careers; the NHL has reinstated all of them as eligible to be signed again and one of them has already been playing as of December. —There was controversy a few years ago when the idea of using rainbow tape on hockey sticks and themed jerseys for Pride nights was introduced. A number of players openly protested, primarily those from countries like Russia, because they feared persecution or repercussions from their home countries due to anti-lgbtq+ laws. This led to the NHL banning the Pride jerseys and tape altogether, which caused a major public outcry. Now, the tape has been allowed back, but not the jerseys because all the players on a team have to be wearing the same jerseys and they can’t have some players wearing Pride ones and others not during a game. A lot of teams have found creative ways to get around this and many of them still sell Pride-themed jerseys for fans. There’s an absolutely incredible post on social media that came out today from one of the only professional male hockey players who is openly gay. He speaks at length about Heated Rivalry and that, while he’s appreciative of the show’s messages and reach, the journey of watching it has brought forth a lot of uncomfortable memories and challenges for him due to his lived experiences. I HIGHLY recommend you take a look at it because it will give you some insight into what being a closeted athlete in the NHL would be like: https://www.instagram.com/p/DTqKngKiHTn/?igsh=MW41bnBpZnNqcjV3bQ==

I think in Shane and Ilya’s case, they’ve been pitted against each other from the start. They were both the top prospects at the World Juniors (or whatever the show’s equivalent is) and then they were the #1 and #2 draft picks. They knew about each other before they’d even met, likely watched tapes and such of each other’s games, and their coaches and parents had probably talked about the other as the top player they’d be competing against. Once they were drafted, the media firestorm only intensified the rivalry and built it up into this huge thing, with two top draft picks playing on rival teams and always competing for the top spot. Even their teammates fed into the rivalry and constantly talked to them about how much they hate the other team and how much Shane hates Ilya and vice versa. So the pressure to keep up that image is coming from all sides and it makes it that much harder for them to keep things a secret

Regarding my question on the "why hockey?"... I've had this discussion with a few people online and the opinions generally gravitate towards: "Because hockey is a very aggressive and physical sport". One of the mechanics of the sport (at least on the NHL level) is to physically "hit" the players (more bump into them at high speed than slap them or something) who have the puck in order to get the puck from them. Combine that with the fact that phyiscal fighting is somewhat allowed (when both players drop their gloves they essentially consent to fighting each other). I guess that gives the characters a bit of an air of "a goon on the ice, but a sweet nice guy in bed" appeal. Generally hockey is trying to be more inclusive as well. And prior to 2023 was one of the most outwardly welcoming sports (you can read the other side of that story in other comments) by organizing pride nights and similar. Hockey is not just NHL though, and things around Europe are quite different. For example from the UK, Romford Raiders made a bit of a splash recently when they had two of their players dressed as Hollander & Rozanov to promote their upcoming games. If you or anyone else wants more good hockey romance, then I highly recommend Like Real People Do (and the whole Breakway series) by E. L. Massey. This one is more similar to the Scott & Kip storyline, but more slowburn.

there really is something about Hunter, that man is dreamyyyy😫😭

Heather Hughes

I think Hollanov both have competency kinks. They are deeply competitive, even racing each other up Shane’s steps. Each loves that the other challenges them physically (on ice and in bed) and mentally (chirps and sexting). That’s the only “rivalry” I see, healthy competitive.

Endymion

If you do like the actor of Hunter, you should watch Midnight, Texas. He is the main there. There is a witch, a vampire and him as a medium. The Show is quite good.
