So much to say about this episode... I bet you had the same though most of us had, Stefan the great manipulator. Elena on the phone: "Why do I look like her?" Stefan: "I honestly don't know" but then he knows a lot. Why didn't he tell her? We know that he saved her life and that he followed her for months in order to ascertain she isn’t Katherine. Then he fell for her and saw the possibility, to pretend with a human that looked like Katherine, a woman he loved. Elena is not an “evil” vampire, she is good and kind and she’s human. So that is what he wanted for himself a normal life. The problem is that in order to get Elena, he lied, manipulated her, made her love him, and secure her love by sleeping with her before actually telling her that everything he said at the beginning is a lie and spilling the truth about Katherine and the fact he saved her. And now, in order to turn her rage in something to his advantage, he tells her the truth and to deflect the attention on the lies told so far, he tells her, he loves her and she is nothing like Katherine. Oh he is so good!! Stefan is smart, and he knows how to play people to his advantage, the scene with Sheila, Bonnie’s grandma, proves it. That scene was formidable. Having said that he doesn’t have malicious intent, he genuinely loves her , but Stefan is a liar, he never provide the truth that doesn’t work to his advantage, unless he is cornered. He manipulate people to get what he needs and what he really needs is to keep intact his good brother reputation, and to pretend to be human, the reasons, or motivations for that we have yet to discover.

Damon on the contrary is bluntly honest, he never lies and he is consistent. If you betray him, you will be dead, Bree wanted him dead and he killed her. Yep, he ripped her heart out; that is a vampire way to kill an enemy and establish power, it’s a message “do not come after me, I'm rutless”. First heart ripped out in the show. The road trip. Damon cares for Elena, he took her with him because I guess he wanted her to get to know him, he cares more than he is willing to admit. She reminds him of Katherine, but also she conquered his respect, he started to see Elena. There is another reason, though; that I cannot tell because is a spoiler. Elena also seems to be very comfortable around him, she trusts him at the point to get drunk and have fun. And she pleaded for his life and saved him. Last but not list, Alaric. We know that Alaric wife’s body was never found. Now we saw Damon biting his wife in their house. He was in their house at a time Alaric wasn’t supposed to be there and someone must have invited him in, so she must have invited him in. So what happen there? There is no shortage of “food” in the street, why was Damon in Alaric’s house?

I love this episode as we get to see a different side of Elena and Damon!! For the past ten episodes, it has only been about Stefan & Elena and Damon & Katherine without any overlap. However, in this episode we get to see on their own, separated from any interference or influence getting to spend time together. Damon really didn't need to take Elena with him to Georgia as her presence wasn't going to make any difference to his purpose of meeting Bree. But it seemed like he actually wanted her to step away from her life and it's problems and just have fun. At the bar, I love how Elena is asking Damon about Katherine and Vampires. It seems like a bond of understanding and trust is starting to build between these two since we saw them having fun and Damon being nice and caring which is probably the first time. They let themselves believe it was safe to let the guards down. Damon didn't need to be nice to her or placate her. As he was quick to point out, she wasn't wearing her vervain necklace. He could have just forced her compliance like he had done with Caroline. But he doesn't. He made a conscious effort to earn her trust by letting her make her own decision. And not surprisingly that all important leap of faith that she took when she chose to continue with him on his mysterious trip to Atlanta and ends up saving his life!! The episode starts with Elena being in trouble and Damon saves her life and the episode ends with Elena saving Damon's life. It is amazing to notice how she is unconsciously able to bring out the caring side of Damon.

I can think we can establish from this episode solely that Stefan is great with words. He knows how much information he should share to begin with and later as people find out more, he is able to explain all of it in a way that works for him. Elena was upset with Stefan and rightfully so not knowing about looking like Katherine but Stefan was very smart about telling Elena about how he spent the last few months making sure she wasn't Katherine and how he was the one to save her life. It was perfect! She is in a vulnerable space and knowing that he saved her life that night is going to make her trust him not distrust. We can see that he does care for Elena and he loves her but I also find it so uncomfortable with how he manages to manipulate a situation where he ends up being the better person. First you withheld information and then when you reveal to them, it seems to look like the best decision to the other person. From the beginning, we have only heard Stefan speaking about Damon being the bad guy and the person you cannot trust. But is it true? Both of them have been manipulating Elena but using different tactics. Stefan will only tell the half-truth and will spill further once he can no longer keep it to himself. Whereas Damon has been dropping hints here and there for Elena to be curious and ask Stefan about Katherine and all. We didn't know then why Damon was doing all of that but it seems like he was actually wanting Elena to find out the truth as soon as she could. He would share information that was the truth and still he didn't tell her everything as if to make sure she had enough to ask the questions to Stefan but only Stefan could choose to tell her the whole truth or not.

The difference in the Elena's manipulation game, is that Stefan has everything to gain from it and Damon only gain is forcing his brother to be truthfull without badmouthing him in front of Elena, by hinting her with enough information for her not to be so trusting about what Stefan says on just about everything that regards him, Katherine or Damon.

Exactly and I couldn't say it any better :)

Harry Allen

The relationship between Elana and Damon is so interesting, cause you can really tell he cares for her but at the same time, he is a killer and she is the literal species he feeds on, so its just a weird concept to look at. It really is becoming clear how manipulative Stefan is with the information he chooses to share, even towards Elena looking like Katherine, we only now find out that he did have more information after all, its just ridiculous at this point.

Harry Allen

I agree, the scene with Sheila really showed how tactical he is with his behavior, always one step ahead so that when he is caught in a lie, he has a quick way out of it. I don't doubt he loves her but the way he alters/hides the truth is ridiculous at this point and I hope Elena sees this too.

Harry Allen

God when he ripped her heart out I felt sick, still makes me feel weird now lol. I am enjoying the relationship between Elena and Damon, I just find it so weird when you consider he literally kills (for the most part) humans for food, just a weird concept. Having said that I do feel like Elena is safe with him, I doubt at this point he would intentionally hurt her. Hmmmm, I need to sit down and think about the Alaric story more as it seems I might have missed a few things. Thanks for all the info!

Elena is a seventeen years old small town girl, the best she could get before meeting Stefan was Matt Donovan, Then she met this misterious gorgious looking guy and he is not like anybody she ever met, he is a vampire and he persued her, he wanted HER. Imagine on a girl of her age what an effect that would have, They also had sex and according to this universe vampire had an extra gear on that department. So of course she fell hard head over heels and she is willing to belive him and to trust him. Plus she is in a greving period and Stefan showed up in a moment she needed to feel good again and he provided that. But Damon is around, to disturb the waters and Elena and Damon have a strange connection, they get each other like not even Stefan gets his brother. Damon is equally gorgious and he has this bad boy aura, that makes him a challange. He treats Elena differently from the way he treat others. Things will get very interesting from a psycological point of view. TVD is so incredibly well written, the characters psycology their motivations, their actions are so incredibly complex and have perfect consistency with the story of their lives and the depth the writers put into character building is something I never seen before of after in any other show.

Patpet

Oh it will get worse.....The difference between the two brothers is that Damon is what it is, he doesn't hide anything, he is vampire he doesn't pretend to be anything else, so with him you know where to stand. Stefan on the contrary is very shady and.....we will see.
