OMG!!!! You have no idea how much accurate your reading of Damon character is, having people to hate him, lower people expectation of him, it is his defence mechanism. He was the one their father saw as a constant disappointment, the one with a bad reputation and reputation, especially if unjustified, does a number on you, makes you feel no matter what you do, people are going to hate you, so he gives them a reason to do so. But we seen few times when Damon lower his defence mechanism, and don't hide behind sarcasm using it as a band aid, how he is in reality, a very caring person with the people he loves. He can argue with his brother, they can fight, but “if you threat my brother I’ll kill you” the big brother in him comes out and he is very protective with Elena too. Also the world of vampire is extremely dangerous and you cannot afford to show weakness. Dalaric is born in this episode, what a badass duo. Elena has no idea who Stefan really is, she just had a little glance and she got already freaked out, because Stefan around her acts as if he is human and he is not. Not only Stefan suppressed his nature for too long, and you going against your nature and repress it instead of learn to control it, it is unnatural and who you are, it is bound to come out before after with an uncontainable blast. As I said, Stefan is a ticking bomb going around pretending to be a clock. And now he had a taste of human blood, he hadn't had for years, and Damon and Stefan face at the end says it all. I cannot wait for you to see the next episodes.

I love this episode and I'm really excited for the next two. Like you have said that this episode we see Damon in a different light for the better. We see his humanity methodically being dragged to the surface. His obvious concern for his little brother and turning up at Elena's door unannounced was once again when Elena and we see him being caring. Then the moment in the rain between Damon & Elena was again another beautiful moment. Most notably because of the way he cups Elena's face just for a moment to calm her rising panic over Stefan's predicament. And the way she actually does calm, at least a bit. He was technically the enemy only a few episodes ago. Yet she derives a measure of comfort from his brief touch of affection. On an unconscious level, a part of her doesn’t shy away from the gentler side of Damon. I love this episode for these very reasons. We see him being driven emotionally for his brother (who he claims to hate and wants to give him an eternity of misery) and making sure he can protect both Elena and his brother. And Elena and Jeremy, both are coming as insane people because they take these risky decisions but at the end of the day they're brave. Elena although she took a huge risk but she was needed in the end. If it wasn't for her, Stefan would have been possibly killed. But this is the first time she has seen Stefan in his vampire form and it is very new to her. With Damon, like you already figured out he came into town being the big bad vampire so he doesn't really shock Elena with his actions when he is being impulsive but it is going to be different with Stefan as she is used to seeing him as human. Stefan, for so long he has stayed true to his act of being human to the best of his ability but now we will get to see the aftermath of drinking human blood. It's going to be interesting to see more layers of his character. Vickie's death being out in the open is good progress. Jeremy was already trying to figure out the connection of what happened to her and what he had seen with Anna. Yes he cared about Vickie and she was someone he connected with but I also feel that it was a stupid reason to think that this is why he should turn. He didn't know the whole story and you cannot make such life altering decisions so casually. I'm really glad Anna didn't follow through and she also told us about why Vampires would choose to turn people. And this is the first time we see the partnership between Alaric, Elena and Damon being born. I love this trio and I liked that Damon didn't go after Alaric after he got knocked down because he knew that Alaric needed to let it out.
