This episode is the most iconic of the series when people want to summarize TVD they mention this episode, the Masquerade ball, everybody looked crazy gorgeous, the setting looked so lavishing, so decadent, so vampire atmosphere appropriate. They know how to write fantastic plot twist, how to shock you and at the same time how to create an aesthetic, an atmosphere of alluring, decadent opulence, that is so what you would want in a vampire show. Jeremy is 16 now, he can drive, and he is definitely grown up into a beautiful men. Fan fact, the actor playing Jeremy is Steven R. Mc Queen, grandson of Steve McQueen and cousin of Enrique Iglesias so his good looks it’s a family thing. So now we know that Katherine, is an incredible planner and cunning and manipulative as nobody and she was running from someone, if she of all people was running from someone, that someone must be quite something. Plus we learn that Elena is referred as the doppelganger and that she has a place in Katherine plan, and she needed the moonstone, that wasn’t hers in the first place, and a werewolf. Now Tyler is activated, he didn’t turn because it wasn’t full moon. No He doesn’t know about vampires, about the council, about anything. And now we have two members of our gang that are supernatural and that have parents in the council. Also one of my favourite moment is when Damon gets his closure by putting Katherine in the tomb, the last sigh he makes after closing the tomb is the expression of the weight lift off his chest, all the lies, the wicked use of his love for her for the purpose of convenience and sex, the manipulation, the suffering this woman put him through, he could finally close the door on it. I love that Lucy told her that she need to stay in the middle of things. She lost her grandma and she has no guidance and nobody to confide in, to know what to do around her supernatural friends and now a relative, someone she can trust, gave her validation on what is her place in this world. She is a witch and witches are powerful creatures, her role should be central. I know I'm not alone in this, but I cannot wait for you to watch next week episode, that is so important for so many reasons. I’ve been waiting all season two episodes, for you to get to the next week episode

This episode is one of the epic episodes of this season mainly because how amazingly it was all pictured and executed. Everyone looked so exceptional and I agree with you that Caroline and Katherine really stood out in their glamorous outfits. But the speed of this episode is something I love about TVD in general!! They don't waste time. I think a lot has already been said in the comments that is worth mentioning. But in this episode for me what stood out was the brothers teaming up and standing up to Katherine. While being stuck in that room there was a lot of talk about their equation. "The brother who loved me too much". It's interesting that Katherine phrases it in this condescending way, belittling the fact that he dedicated his whole vampire life up until now to her, died for her, waited over a century to be with her. She isn't wrong because he did love her too much. But she didn't deserve it. And yet she is the one who claims to be so irritated and offended by his love. Even though he is the one that was so severely wronged in this situation. My heart breaks when he says "That Damon died a long time ago" because I know what he is talking about and it makes so much sense. And that makes watching this again infinitely more painful than it used to be. The true beauty of this episode, which was spent trying to kill Katherine. He isn’t clinging onto her, trying to derive meaning from the last century and a half of his life, trying to win her back or figure out why he isn’t enough. He’s let her go in every sense. So much so that he’s willing to kill her without hesitation. Because he sees her for what she is to him. Poison. A destructive force for his sanity, happiness and stability. And I honestly love that when Katherine is trying to instigate the brothers regarding, Damon just shrugged sarcastically, as if to say, ‘It is what it is. What can you do?’ He’s never once admitted to it to anyone. But he makes no effort to pretend otherwise either. And Katherine seems to be comparing the current situation to being similar to that of 1864, when the brothers basically worshipped her. But she fails to or willfully ignores that these are different circumstances. They’re different people. And Elena is different. Both Stefan’s and Damon’s behavior in regard to Katherine 145 years ago was akin to worship. They fawned over her, let her toy with both of them, play them against each other, and ultimately let her lead them to their deaths. I personally don't believe that Stefan loved Katherine because he didn't love her for who she truly was. But for Damon he was aware of the good and bad but he loved her despite all of it because she made him believe that she loved him in the same manner. However these two were enthralled by her. But their feelings for Elena are nothing like that. Elena backing off from continuing to be in a relationship with Stefan wasn't out of character. She doesn't refuse to be wanting to be with him but she says that she needs to feel safe! It's a big thing. It's not just about her family and friends from my pov but also about her. She is in the middle of a lot of things and feeling responsible for almost anything that could wrong. And maybe at this point she feels it is best to keep her focus on herself and her loved ones (excluding vampires). Lucy was my favourite in this episode. It was a very short cameo role but it had amazing impact. Bonnie is tapping into a lot of new things and meeting someone who could tell her that she was doing just fine being in the middle of it was what she needed to hear from someone of her own kind. And I agree that for Bonnie being in the middle is the best place for her because she can make judgments from a neutral pov to an extent. The best scene of the episode undoubtedly was Damon having had Katherine sealed into the tomb. He’s spent most of his life waiting for Katherine, assuming she was in the tomb he just imprisoned her in. And now he couldn't care less about her. But more important than his obvious loathing for Katherine is his response to the notion that Elena is in danger that he doesn’t know about. His face says it all. As soon as Katherine hints that she might be in some unforeseen trouble he freezes and looks more worried by the barest whisper of a threat against Elena than he’s ever looked about anything else. “Then I’ll protect her, while you rot in hell.” By this point we are nearly thirty episodes into this series. We’ve gotten to know Damon rather well. And I can safely say I’ve never seen the man look more resolved than he did when he stated so blatantly that he’d protect Elena no questions asked. He didn’t even hesitate, didn’t make any mention of the various other people in her life that could also keep her safe from this unknown threat. He just took the responsibility on himself like it was no big deal. Like it was completely natural for him to claim the role as her silent safety even though things are still rocky and distant between, he and Elena. She’s yet to forgive him. They’ve had little personal interaction in the last few episodes. But he could care less. Her acceptance of him and their friendship means nothing as long as she’s safe. And that’s how you know both how far he has come already on his journey to emotional self-awareness. With this episode, the first leg of his journey is complete. He’s successfully moved on from Katherine and acknowledged it. She has no hold over him anymore.
