This season yet again has started off with a bang!! We have Klaus and Stefan travelling and going after werewolves. Seeing Stefan being true to his vampire nature is for a change nice. It is a good reminder to the audience too that even though he wished to live a normal human life it is going to be close to impossible because he isn't a human any longer. And clearly as a vampire there are many shades to him! And Paul does true justice to these shades of Stefan. He actually scares me. Damon and Andie have come far from season 2 and I can say that from the way they were communicating in the start of this episode. He wasn't compelling her any longer and we saw them being normal. But unfortunately again he lost someone he was growing close with. It must have reminded him yet again of Rose sadly. These are the kind of reasons he does have walls around his heart because when he ends up losing people; he doesn't know how to deal with the overwhelming emotions. I know that Stefan killed Andie because he wanted to get Damon to back off. But is this going to be truly effective? Yes it is going to warn him a little bit about how far Stefan has gone but I think he is forgetting that Damon isn't one to give up on people he cares about. And that's very much evident because he doesn't share his research about Stefan's victims with Elena. It wasn't only to protect Elena but also because he didn't want to highlight the bad side of Stefan in front of Elena. Damon and Elena have a lot of sexual tension oozing. A sign of how things had already started to change between them since his near death by wolf bite. Now that Elena knows - really knows - how Damon feels about her and has accepted that she cares deeply in return, fighting their palpable chemistry will prove much more difficult than it has in the past. Until this point, there was always something in the middle. Stefan. Katherine. Damon killing Jeremy. Elena chasing her own death. And just the simple excuse of plausible deniability. Because even if Elena suspected Damon had feelings for her, she had no confirmation from him directly (that she knew of) until he told her so on his deathbed. but none of those obstacles are in play anymore. Katherine is irrelevant to them personally. The sacrifice is long over. Both Jeremy and Elena have forgiven Damon for his drunken neck-snapping. And Stefan is gone. So yet again, the dynamic has shifted. Into a territory overwhelmed by attraction and intrigue and flirtation. The necklace scene is poignant!! It was such a beautiful scene with the right nuances and silence. He brings back the necklace that had been given to Elena to keep Damon out of her head. He brings it back as a birthday gift because he knows that she is missing Stefan and it means a lot to her. But the beautiful thing about this exchange was that Damon loves Elena and yet he gives her the one thing that represents hope for Stefan and Elena😭❤️ Caroline and Tyler were going to be a thing and we knew that from season 2 finale. I am actually happy with them being a couple because I think they will be good together. However his mother is going to be an issue. I just wish Caroline doesn't suffer. Jeremy should be transparent with Bonnie I feel. I know it's something he himself is having a hard processing and it is also about his ex-girlfriends but Bonnie deserves to know. Hopefully he will let her know soon.

If we could rename the episode, we could easily be called “The birthday from hell”. Now Elena is eighteen. This episode is a milestone in the series, it’s an episode that needs to be kept in mind because events that happened in this episode, will be mentioned in the future. Klaus and Stefan. Klaus is extremely smart, he has lived for longer than any vampire, you cannot fool him, he has a network of people everywhere that are eager to please him, out of fear mostly, and we learn that he is a meticulous planner. So, whatever happens, he will know. Plus, living that much long, gives you the advantage to read people very easily. So when Klaus said to Stefan: “you put on a great show…but you still care about your family” means that Stefan is faking it, he hasn’t switch his humanity off, he is just pretending to be who he used to be, the infamous “ripper” well know in the supernatural universe, because of his particular violent behaviour of feeding with such ferocity that blocks out and rips people apart. And when he doesn’t have his humanity off, when he comes back to senses he feels guilty and put the body parts of his victims, back together. Stefan is another level of vampire, that makes all vampires looks like kitty cats. The fact that he feels guilt, is another clue that Stefan hasn’t switched his humanity off. The last scene is a further confirmation, that he is putting on a show for Klaus benefit, to protect the fact that Elena is still alive and Klaus doesn't know, and to protect his brother from being killed by Klaus. So, Stefan’s killing is done consciously. He is trapped. Damon. Of course, he is looking for his brother, Stefan saved his life, and he is his brother, how dare Klaus have a Salvatore as minion!! He didn’t tell Elena, any of it, not because he wants to protect Elena from the truth, but because of his brother. Damon doesn’t bad mouth his brother specially with Elena. He wanted to keep the reality of what his brother is from Elena, he is in big brother mode, at the point that for Elena’s birthday, he, again, gave her the necklace that represent hope for his brother and Elena relationship, that much selfish and thoughtful he is. Damon too cannot catch a break, every time he tries to build any kind of relationship with someone that show him care and affection, it is taken away from him, brutally. Before Rose and now Andie, and this time is even worse because it is at the hand of his brother. That is his frustration for his life, where he is not allowed to have even a fake girlfriend, that as per Rose, he wasn’t in love with but he had been going out t with Andie for more than 6 month, he definitely cared about her and she seriously liked him, they had a complicated dynamic but they had a relationship, much more solid then most couple I know. Killing Andie is not going to make Stefan or Elena stop looking for Stefan, it might have had a temporary halt, but nor Elena or Damon will ever stop trying. The last scene of Damon trashing Stefan’s room is out of deep sadness and frustration, he is in love with Elena and his brother is in a dare situation, plus his brother killed his only meaning to have something light in his life that prevent him to be reminded constantly of being alone and unloved. Alaric is still processing Jenna’s loss and his isn’t doing well, he has been staying in their house because they all feel alone and lost, but he cannot cope with the responsibility of being a parent figure, he just can’t, too much to cope with., right now. So, he decide to take himself out of the equation and go and grief alone. Elena is clueless about her boyfriend, but that is not her fault. Stefan pretending to be human around her, gave her a false narrative of what a vampire could be, of how Stefan really can be, on his history and on the extent of how much over the edge he can go. Damon, didn’t wanted to wash family's dirty clothes in front of anybody, because they are eternal, they are going to be in each other life forever, and Elena is human, how long their relationship will last? Specially now that Stefan is allegedly off the rails and he might not be back to normal for very long time, keeping Elena off family dark business feels right. Damon has an eternity in front of him, he can wait, Elena has only her lifetime. She is in denial, but she is starting to faced with the reality of things. Damon and Elena. What can I say? Damon gave up his precious house to a bunch of students, trashing his precious carpets and stealing his precious bourbon, just for Elena, not only, he gave her the necklace his brother gave her as birthday present. Elena on the other hand, even if she is in love with Stefan, and she would never be non-loyal, she is showing some unconscious behaviour that is saying that her relationship with Damon is changing. She goes to the party with Damon on her arm in front of everybody, as couples do, she drinks from his glass, even Alaric notice that, she goes to have a break in his room (as Caroline do as well) and when he gave her the necklace she ask him to put it on her neck, and the tension between the two of them went on the roof in a second. Body language now is crucial, to understand where the characters are heading. Also let’s have a moment of appreciation for Damon’s hair this season, can this man be anymore gorgeous? There is a very funny story on the naked Damon scene, told by Ian that is worth watching. Let’s say that at this point Ian and Nina were going out and she must have seen him as mother nature intended plenty of time, so get a natural shock expression out of her seen Damon naked they had to resort to some pretty funny stuff…. he tells it differently though…he is a gentleman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UT-acaSRIDg

ur totally right about the diff vibes this szn, it feels a little darker to me, and you'll see that progress more as the szn goes on obv; i like it tho lol😈 also, this was already pointed out but the scene with Damon and Elena w the necklace just shows how selfless damon truly can be; giving elena something that represents hope for her relationship w/ his brother, despite his feelings for her ;))

Karianna

god i love ian, in that interview and literally every interview of him he is so educated 😩we love to see it

Totakly agree, he is the whole package, beauty, brain, kindness, sense of humor, off the chart natural sex appeal and he is a very good story teller, articulated and charming .

There are two symbols worth paying attention to, which are the white dress Elena is wearing and the two lighted candles in the room when Damon gave Elena her necklace.
