This episode it is all about the love they have for each other. Stefan and Damon there is no way that Damon or Stefan would let their brother get hurt. Alaric and Elena are family, after all he is the husband of her mother, but is true they are close in age too, so they are friends too; Alaric and Damon are becoming like brothers; Matt, Jeremy, Anna and Vicky, that is another story; Tyler and Caroline, Carol for her son. And by the way I love how Carol was very quickly on board for her son, contrary to Liz that needed long time to convince. It doesn’t look like Caroline father wants to kill her; if he did he would have already. Instead he chained her on a dungeon, what his plans are will be reviled in the next episode. And that is when the allegory for Vampires in this show, will be more obvious. The love of the two brothers for Elena is not a love triangle. It is way more complex than this. Elena met Stefan in a moment she was very young, vulnerable, grieving and needed someone to snap her out to that feeling of dread and numbness, she was in and get back the old Elena full of life, energy, and get her to enjoy life once again. Stefan on the other hand, wanted to rewrite his love story with Katherine and play it as it was in his mind when he was human, when he thought that Katherine was an angel, he wanted to relive that moment, feel human again, alive again, because everything that happen after has brought him so much self loathing and anguish, he wants an opportunity to forget he is a vampire and live a life as close as possible as human. So their relationship was born out mutual reciprocal salvation, as a band aid to their issues, out of a specific time of their life and what they both felt at that time, that fitted perfectly with what they both needed in that moment. Elena was keeping loosing people, so she was in constant state of grief and Stefan was always around to support her. But even though their love deepened, let’s not forget that she never saw a future with him; she never wanted to be with him for eternity, in her mind he is not worth becoming a vampire. And even on Stefan’s side the premises of their love were very shady and not solely Elena related. Now that he is not around, she has the chance to think, to be confronted with what she really wants in her love life in the long run. She is becoming an adult; she is coming out of her grieving time. Things and circumstances in life changes, not everybody ends up married to their school's sweetheart, because what a young teenager wants in life it is different to what an adult wants. Elena and Stefan are technically together still, even though Stefan is doing everything to push everybody’s away, apart when he has conflicting feelings and his “keep away from me” sound less and less convincing. Elena is loyal to him, no doubt. But Damon has always been there in the back of her mind, like a subconscious self doubt: “Am I with the right person?”. She knows he loves her, but the premises of Damon’s love for Elena are different. He didn’t loved her because of Katherine, or his past, he started to love her because she surprised him, she gain his respect, she showed him compassion and care. She gets him like not even Stefan gets his brother and she does because she is much more like Damon than she is like Stefan, impulsive, reckless, passionate, bossy. He loves her for her, for who she is. Also they share this magnetic physical attraction, Elena doesn’t have with Stefan. Give me a dollar for every time Elena stares at Damon’s lips when they are close and I’ll be a millionaire. So here the story about Stefan Elena and Damon is not about a pointless love triangle, but is more an allegory for the love life journeys we all go through in our life, from our youth to adulhood. The scenes between Damon and Elena in her room are becoming a thing between them, is the place where Damon and Elena share their most inner thoughts. To Elena not having Stefan around to cloud her judgment is an opportunity for her to realize that her feeling for him, Damon, are not deniable anymore and she has to get to the point to admit them. An even if her loyalty is with Stefan, she is going through an internal turmoil of feelings, and Alaric already notice those feelings in the last episode.

Another good episode!! Elena and Alaric's relationship does have that father-daughter dynamic and it's beautiful because like they discussed these two know the pain of losing family members and after losing Jenna they are certainly on the same page so having each other as family is the best for them. I know Alaric feels guilty for not being the ideal role model but that's okay everyone is allowed to go through a phase where things aren't perfect. But he is pulling himself together and is always there for Elena, Damon and Jeremy. I think him tipping off Damon about Elena's plan was not breaking her trust because at the end of the day, someone has to be practical. Elena didn't want to tag Damon along because at the beginning he didn't seem interested in helping according to her but undoubtedly this plan was stupid. She cannot just pack her bag and head into the mountains where there is pack of wolves and the hybrid who has been thinking all this time that she is dead. So honestly Alaric did the right thing and he also kept Damon's trust as a friend while making sure he takes the right steps to ensure Elena is going to be safe. Stefan and Damon might fight like dogs and have many issues but one thing that is given about these two is that no one can harm them if they have each other. These two would give up their life for each other. It's again highlighting the importance of the family theme in this show and it is about the love story of the brothers. From the start of Season 1 it has been established that they can be the only one hurting each other but no one else dares to lay a finger. And even Stefan handing himself over to Klaus was because he wanted to save his brother. He doesn't want to live without his brother. Speaking about Damon and Elena's progressing relationship. I think it's very evident from the 1st episode of this season there have many been changes between these two. There is a lot of tension in the air and Elena is at a crossroad. Earlier she had Stefan around so she never even entertained the thought of 'what could be' if she had met Damon first or if she had met both the brothers at the same time. But now that Stefan isn't around and she is very well aware of Damon's feelings, she is going to have to start reexamine herself and her relationship with the Salvatores. As for Damon, he knows that it will always be Stefan and he cares for his brother a lot so he isn't actually trying t win over Elena because he doesn't even believe that it is a possibility. But his feelings cannot be buried. In his hearts of hearts, Damon's priority is not being Elena's first choice. It isn't winning her over or trying to steal her from Stefan. It's her. She is the priority. Whatever she wants, needs and loves and that is what he wants. He has promised to bring Stefan back because he knows that his brother can still be saved and because she needs him and loves his brother. Stefan's absence is giving Elena the chance to observe Damon and his unconditional love. It is also important to be shedding assumptions based on his earlier because he is doing all these things to secure her future with Stefan and being super supportive without letting his feelings get in the way and stopping him. He was always capable of doing these things but he needed the chance. Now that she has confessed to being worried about him it was really assuring for him because it makes him happy that she cares for him. But the significant part is that she is actually terrified of losing him after witnessing how horrific the werewolf bite can be. So she gave up on her pursuit to find her boyfriend. It is safe to say that Elena is lost. She has to find her way and make decisions about many things that influence her tomorrow. Become an adult with adult emotions and expectations. Someone who isn't going to look at the world in black and white shades. The scene between Damon and Elena in the room still gets to me. There is just so much potential here, brewing between them. Damon has started to observe the changes Elena is going through and he decided to confront her today about her growing concern for him. She is putting Damon first, something she has never really done before, not like this. And let’s not even talk about the fact that things have changed so much between them that Damon holding her face in his hands was completely normal. She didn’t even flinch when he touched her. A touch that is not even near friendly and far too intimate for too people pretending not to be in love. Although Damon isn’t pretending. Now that his feelings for her have been let into the open he’s not even attempting to tamp them down. It’s basically tattooed across his forehead. Damon isn't telling her to not be in love with Stefan and stop looking for him because he himself is on board with bringing Stefan back to Elena. He isn't saying that her waiting for Stefan is wrong. But he also told her not to disregard the things she thinks and feels and experiences while Stefan is gone. He told her not to ignore something in her present just because her past might be coming back for her. And looking at things from Elena's pov solely I can only imagine how she must have felt to know that Stefan has left. The fact of the matter is that Stefan left her. Without a word. Yes his reasons were entirely heroic and noble and justifiable and selfless. But he still left. Right after she’d lost her aunt and her birth father and come back from the dead herself, he completely abandoned her and started tearing up the coast with Klaus. That decision by itself was enough to cause a giant rift between Stefan and Elena. She may still love him and want to fight to get him back but things have changed already. Things changed immediately, the moment he chose Damon’s life over staying with her.

The nuances describing the evolutions of relationships in this show are something that I have never seen addressed so incredibly realistically and in dept, in any other show, ever.

I love what you said about the main characters not being a pointless love triangle but an allegory of love from youth to adulthood. That is an amazing statement.

Oh, Harry, put on your seatbelt because you are going in for a ride in season three. I remember the first time I watched TVD; I felt like my heart and brain were taken into a supersonic emotional ride that I will never forget. I watch True Blood to calm my emotions after watching a TVD episode.
