Stefan does not hide it from Elena tho. He clearly tried to explain she does not know him, his past, and even shared everything to her. She just does not seem to understand it. It's not Stefan's fault she does that. It's not Damon's fault she is so naive at the same point. Stefan treated Elena to understand the situation, and make her own choice, not be a gullible fool. That Elena did it herself, it's not Stefan's doing at all. Stefan does not BABY her. He just hides his past because it is damn painful for anyone. It;s like saying a drug addict is trying to present himself as a hero just by the way he does not let his addiction come full front. That is not how it works. Elena's naivety and indecisiveness is the reason for all this, not Stefan.

Yay finally something to watch lol, glad you are feeling better!

Small note on Stefan's list-o-names, I believe that's a list of all his victims up to that point, not just people he killed in Chicago, because the first name on the list was his dad. Glad to hear you are feeling better!

Patpet

The people he killed in Monterey are not in this list.

This episode was fantastic, one of my favourites. TVD is so intricated, it’s like a giant jigsaw puzzle, and you are going to get the entire story piece by piece, for you to put it together. Kevin Williams one of the main writers is gay, so absolutely yes, the scene with Caroline and Bill, her father, was a very deliberate obvious camp conversion allegory. Vampires in this show are, among other things, used as an allegory for everything that is racist, homophobic, and discriminatory. Mystic Falls is conveniently in the South, and already there are been clear parallel between slavery and werewolves, but also a very evident mention to antisemitism. Werewolf in cinema history are very often associated with Nazism, an association that the writers of this show are surely much aware of. Here the correlation is just slightly mention and the little story line referring to the Lockwood that would be the one initiating the extermination of the vampires in 1864 aiming to gain their property and their land for free, it is pretty much the summary of what was the aim of Nazi plan to exterminate Jews people. The writers are very educated and knowledgeable, and the allegories are what makes the show very adult and what kids will never get. Stefan is one of the kind, his riper persona is disturbing to say the list. When he has his humanity on, he tears people apart because he cannot control his blood lust, he blocks out and bites with such violence that rips people into piece, only to feel sorry when he comes back to his senses. When he has his humanity off, he can control his blood lust, but he is a vicious murder that likes to torture his victims. When he arrived to Chicago, he was already famous because he exterminated an entire village in Monterey. But he has a different peculiarity. While other vampires, kill to eat without any deliberate plan, Stefan plans his killing, by asking the name of the victim he decided he is going to kill, and makes a list of his victims, like a serial killer do collecting something from his victims. He is a ripper and a serial killer. Damon when he has his humanity on kills to defend himself or to eat. When he has his humanity off, he kills with a purpose still. Both brothers navigate in a grey area nobody is entirely good or bad, but bad Stefan is very dark, as dark as his brother never been.

On a fan note, when they told Paul about the storyline of bad Stefan he was trilled, his stone-cold face and his portray of psychopaths (as we can see in “Tell me a Story” season two) are legendary. Also, we will see our beloved Paul in the new Star Trek series as no less than in the young version of Captain James Tiberius Kirk.

When I saw the announcement for Star Trek I was screaming, like what are the fucking chances someone from one of my new favourite series is now going to be in my favourite series from when I was a kid 😭

Harry Allen

Hehe thank you! I was so bored that the urge to binge The Vampire Diaries was VERY hard to control lol

Patpet

I know, I was so flipping happy for him, he so deserve it and I wish Ian too would get more big roles, like him, they both so deserve it, they are such great actors. I am too a Star Trek fan.

Tamia Alexis

Yeah I’m sure that was the worst especially when laying around all day haha

What a crazy episode with so many revelations! Knowing Klaus and Stefan's past history puts so many pieces of the jigsaw puzzle together. Klaus had always been interested in making Stefan leave Mystic Falls with him and when he had the chance he made sure Stefan had no choice but to leave with him. And now Stefan is revisiting his past demons and acts. The fact that Stefan likes to know the name of his victims before he attacks them screams out to the fact that it's not impulsive, he likes to plan it and execute the plan by choice in these situations. I don't know if you remember but in Season 1 when Damon and Elena were dancing, Stefan was with Amber and he had asked for her name before he compelled her to run. Why? Because he likes the chase. Damon and Elena's dynamic is changing by the day, the morning scene in bed is one good example of it. They make such a commendable effort on the surface to keep things simple and platonic between them, when deep down they both recognize that the nature of their relationship has changed significantly since Stefan left. And since they kissed on Damon’s deathbed. Mixed in with all their tension and bickering, not to mention some serious allusions to the romantic bond that grows ever stronger between them by the day, is this wonderful intimacy, born of their intensified partnership. They have always been a team. From the beginning it’s just how they operated in crisis. But that particular aspect of their relationship has increased tenfold without Stefan around. Because they’ve spent over two months relying heavily on each other. Although we never saw exactly how Damon helped Elena following Jenna and John’s (and her) death, or how Elena started to erase her emotional boundary lines with him following his near death by wolf bite, we do see the result. Moving on to Stefan, Elena and Damon! Elena’s naivety about Stefan is almost painful. She thinks she understands, thinks that his small relapse in season one and the lone story he told her about the time following his transition has given her enough of a glimpse into his dark side. She has no idea, no remote concept of what he’s spent the entire length of their relationship hiding from her. She doesn’t know how twisted his demons really are. But this storyline is significant for so many reasons and one of them is that Elena needs to realise that she doesn't know the Salvatores as well as she thinks does. That they'd both kept too much of themselves hidden from her in an effort to maintain a certain appearance. To cultivate a façade. “What were you doing in the 1920’s, paving the way for women’s liberation? Do you see how she’s trying to justify it? To make sense of Stefan’s behavior by turning Damon into the bad guy? She is literally staring at a wall covered in the names of every person Stefan has ever killed - beginning with his own father by the way - and still she tries to twist it and make it seem like whatever Damon was doing at the time was obviously worse. It’s a damaging coping mechanism. I know that for Elena to be able to understand that there is no line is going to take time and many acts on both the brothers’ parts. But as an audience I think we can safely say that these brothers are BOTH flawed. But they are flawed because they are damaged. And that damage doesn’t make them any less capable of love or heroism. Another scene I found interesting was when Elena calls Damon out of panic just in case Stefan and Klaus come back to the apartment and discover her. I think she was expecting Damon to run over immediately and fuss over it. But he didn’t do that. He tried to play it cool, to take the edge off for her by poking fun and giving her a task to distract her. And that is why it’s an interesting scene because again it paints a very distinct picture of the difference between Delena and Stelena. Elena expected Damon to overreact to the news that Klaus had almost discovered her. Because that’s what Stefan would’ve done. He’d have rushed back and fussed over her. Coddled her. Overstimulated whatever panic she was already feeling. He’d have treated her like a victim. Just like he did during the sacrifice ritual. But Damon isn’t like that. He doesn’t coddle Elena. He doesn’t nitpick and fret over near catastrophes. He doesn’t worry about collateral damage. He’s nothing like Stefan. And he will never treat her like Stefan treats her. He will not baby her. He will uplift her. By not making mountains out of molehills. By keeping things light because stressing over every little thing only exacerbates the problems that already exist. By focusing on the task at hand and striving with a single minded purpose to accomplish whatever their goal happens to be. He takes things in stride instead of letting every almost crisis get the better of him. It’s a trick Elena needs to learn. Because she’s let the little things bog her down for far too long.

Archna, what you mentioned about Damon versus Stefan with Elena is why I like Damon for Elena. Episode 19 of season 3 explains this concept beautifully.

The things Stefan said in season one are shocking like when he said to Elena "when have I ever wanting someone to be hurt?" Excuse me mr ripper what did you just said? 😂 Stefan is totally not self aware, and believes his oun lies, everything is justified becase in his head he is a good person, and everything bad he does is forgivable because he feels guilty, he was never hold accountable for everything he did. That's why he is so self-righteous. He is not a bad person, but he is far from being someone who could preach anybody about ethics and he does that constantly specially to his brother.

Latrae Osborne

When Stefan speaks in season 1, he's talking like that because he doesn't want to hurt people if he can help it. As long as Stefan is in control of his bloodlust he is for all intents and purposes a good person. It's apart of his curse. The difference between Damon and Stefan is all about intent. Stefan tries not to hurt people if he can help it. Damon will hurt people if it serves a purpose. Now do I believe Damon is a bad person, not for all the money in the world. Both are traumatized and that trauma plays out differently Stefan overdoing with the ripper and Damon dealing with his emotions. He preaches like that to his brother because he wants him to do and be better like he knows he can be.

Hi Harry, I see people giving you their impressions of the characters per episode, so here I go. Damon: In this episode Damon does something that I actually applaud in the grand scheme of things. Elena's severe naivety leads her to believe season 1's brief look and the story how Lexi helped Stefan the first time prepared her for what Stefan's like in the middle of a full binge. He gave her the 1900's-1950's diary which is used as a reference point the entire episode. It gives us a look into Stefan's White Knight Archetype. He showed her a few of the chinks/dings in the armor. He also shows her Stefan's kill list which gives her an even better glimpse she/us doesn't know anything. Damon's flippant attitude about the encounter is another point I liked. Stefan tends to rush in ready to protect and shield Elena and she's gotten used to it. Damon treats it like an unfortunate mishap which it is. He gives a half full kind of perspective which comes out more for his loved ones. Damon doesn't dwell especially when there's other things to be done. Now Damon's Black Knight Archetype comes out when he's ready to stall Klaus for Stefan and Elena. Knowing full well Klaus would break him in three and play with the pieces. Damon even tried to play up how much fun on binge he is, even though Stefan is vastly more interesting and intriguing while on a binge. Stefan: this episode we get to see more of his White Knight Archetype. Stefan rebuilds himself after every binge or crafts new armor each time he comes back. For Elena, he crafted the armor closest to what he wants to be: Hero Armor. It didn't have any chinks/dings/dull spots, nothing. Over the course of the series, his internal flaws have been aging the armor. Showing how broken, how tired, how traumatized he really is. He never tells people when he's drowning until it's almost too late if not already too late. He doesn't want anyone to have a peek under the Armor because he's afraid that they will leave him. However his brother sees it and is willing to help even if he doesn't go about it the right way. Caroline is another who sees under the Armor. He's tried to hide his more darker aspects as to not scare people away but now he needs them in order to do what needs to be done. Obviously Stefan is someone who suppresses his monster and plays up his humanity because it's some he wishes he could have again. I like how get to see his more ruthless/sadistic side. He is starting to sound and even act more ruthless. His interaction with Elena needed to happen because her naively believing his rehab time is a couple of months to years was hard to watch. She didn't pay attention to the dates or what was said. He finally said in no uncertain terms that he's not coming back anytime soon. Elena: now I dislike/hate Elena but I will try not to harp on that. So her journey is one of growth especially after dying which is treated as the end of one's journey. Thanks to Stefan crafting his White Knight Armor, she is woefully unprepared for the truth of what Stefan is like. She doesn't know how dark he was and uses Damon's history as a measuring stick. She thought she could get Stefan with the same trick as before. That doesn't work twice. Also allows the audience to understand this time is much worse than the one before with real stakes. She doesn't understand how to function when new info is given. Damon tries to prepare her for what she may see but still she can't comprehend. Elena isn't ready but she's needs to get ready if she wants a chance at rescuing Stefan

I agree with the fact that none of the brothers are bad but as you pointed out intentions are what differ. And here is where we don't agree. Stefan intetions might seems to him not to hurt people but he is very oblivious to his own faults, Stefan lack of self-awareness for 7 seasons is legendary. He motives backgrounds are always based on 2 things, to keep his reputations intact and to feel human and to do that he would go to any length, lie, manipulate, used smooth talking, gaslighting. That is what he did to Elena in season one, why? Because he needed Elena to feel human, he saw in Elena the chance to relive in a positive way his love story with Katherine as he imagine it would have gone if they were both human. So Stefani's motivations are always inwards towards himself. Now everybody in the show has a role, Stefan is the negotiator, Damon is the action man. Damon is the protector, his motivation is find love and he would do anything to protect his loved ones and in his loved one there is practically everyone Stefan Elena Bonnie Alaric Liz Caroline Matt perhaps not Tyler but he would occasionally protect him if one of the above asked him. He doesn't hurt people, he hurts himself, to protect people he would go to the extreme to make himself hated for it, but the point is that everybody understand that they needed Damon because he takes on himself to do the dirty work that is necessary to do in order for everybody to survive, dirty work that nobody wants to do, specially Stefan because, on occasion, it would tarnish the reputation of the person doing it, and Damon knows that, the turning of Bonnie's mom is an example, Stefan should have done it but Damon took it upon himself to protect his brother reputation, and prevent people and himself to self loading and hating Stefan for it. So Damon's motivations are outwards are from himself to others. That is why Damon is more relatable and more loved because Damon at the end of the day is very selfless, he doesn't care about his reputation or his life as long as everybody is safe. He does make mistakes along the way but because he acts on behalf of everybody and "who doesn't act never make mistakes" which is precisely the differences between the brothers. Damon does the dirty necessary work so that nobody has to do it Stefan included. Stefan is the child and Damon is the parent, Stefan is the smooth talker to give people the impression of calm and collected aura, Damon is the charmer because all survivors are charmer, do be able to disarming people from hurting him, because Damon has been hurt far too many times. And that is the difference between the brothers. Has nothing to do with being good or bad is about roles and about nobility of intentions and Damon's nobility is far superior than Stefan's.
