It is undeniable now, to Elena too that she has feeling for Damon, the hold back is that Elena see things still like a girl, she fears the judgement of her friends, that see only the side of Damon that Damon allows them to see, because he is acting like someone that has been broken too many times and just gave up on explain to people that he is not a bad person. And you are correct, it comes back on how his father view him, the fact that he was a first born, the inheritance of the name and the estate and so much pressure was put on him to behave accordingly, to go to a war he didn’t believe in, and experience the horror of it, just to please his father, that is never going to be please with the person he is, because that person is more than just a complaisant child, but his own person someone that wants more. “My father never approved of the people I dated” he said once to Jenna. Damon has a very vivacious intelligence, obviously he is attracted to women that have personality, intelligence and power, that is why he loved Katherine, the fact that she was a vampire, different, was a plus for him, he is not scared to see the plus in people that are different from him, he sees it as an exciting challenge, as an enrichment, Damon doesn’t judge, Damon sees possibilities. That is what he challenge Elena with, with the prospective to grow up and stop living according to others expectations of you, but be your true self and to get what you want in life, even if people around you would not approve, because the people that really loves you, would want you to be you and would want for you what makes you happy. Elena is still holding on to the girl, scared of others judgements and of how Damon react to bumps in the road. And boy, you could see in Damon’s eyes the horror of being again use as a sex object, not someone worth having a relation with, outside the bedroom, because he is who he is. The man has a baggage, a heavy baggage and sometimes looses it, as any of us would considering how heartbreaking and tough his life has been, and the fact that being a vampire, per se, was something that was force on him. He doesn’t behave according to how society expected him to behave, he is who he is, he can't change that, so he deals with it. Even Stefan got it, finally... you cannot repress the dark side of you just because that is not what others would not like of you, or because you think way too highly of yourself, just not allow yourself to admit to have a dark side. Repress it doesn’t makes it go away, just makes it dangerously brewing in your subconscious ready to come out with a blast, that is why Stefan is a ripper, not because he is, but because he is repressing and rejecting his dark side instead of accepting it and deal with it. That is what Damon have been challenging Elena with, to own her true self and her real wants and he is breaching through to the shell of black and white judgment her life has been so far, because Elena is intelligent and she knows when someone is telling her things that are real, scary perhaps but truthful. It is easy to see life in black and white, right or wrong, but acknowledging that that is not how things are, it is daunting. It’s the challenge of growing up from the simpler, easy, circumscribed world of childhood, to a very complex, trying and demanding world that is also thought-provoking, exciting and full of possibilities and adventures. Stefan is the safe choice, the worlds of certainty that is her childhood, Damon is the uncertainty of the future and the challenge of adult life. And that is why I love this show, the dept that comes through and how they use romance to drown parallels to the challenges of growing up and finding your true self is just beautiful writing.

Couple little things you questioned during the episode. The thing that Damon was carrying at the motel was an ice bucket. And the reason Damon gave Alaric the "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" book was because its about a person with a violent alter ego, just him poking fun at the whole situation lol.

I am going to warn at the beginning that this is going to be a long comment😂 “Every time there’s a bump in the road, you lash out.” “What if I didn’t? What if there was no bump?” Don’t pretend to be surprised. This is without question my all time favorite of their road trips. Nothing can ever top it. Too much happened - too much CHANGED - for it not to be their best. Beginning with them just showing up at the batting cages to get Jeremy like two parents picking up their teenage son and ending with Rose’s magnificent speech to him about the nature of Damon and Elena’s complicated relationship, everything that transpired between them in Denver is the stuff of pure legend. But of course the most memorable moment is that glorious five minute scene that started when Damon walked out of the bathroom shirtless after his shower. And Elena, pretending to be asleep, looked him up and down with blatant sexual curiosity in her eyes as he sat at the table nursing some bourbon. The conversation that follows, the revelations it fostered, set the entire stage for the future. “Why don’t you let people see the good in you?” “Because when people see good they expect good. And I don’t wanna have to live up to anyone’s expectations.” This is almost like a parallel to the night I can’t mention yet. A night that is very special for them. But anyway getting back to the point, What initially drew Elena to Damon was his willingness to be himself. For better or worse, Damon does not hide behind pretenses. While he masks his emotions with sarcasm and impulsive mistakes, he’s not ashamed to be his own person. He doesn’t let other people dictate who he is or what decisions he makes. He doesn’t exist to please anyone for his own good reasons. And that’s a lesson human Elena still has to learn. She is getting there, slowly but surely. This conversation certainly gave her a lot to think about. It’s why she was so breathless lying there next to him. Because it’s an aspect of Damon’s personality that makes him dangerous. That gives him an edge others don’t have. It’s an attitude Elena secretly wishes to adopt. The ability to live beyond the expectations of others. Part of living beyond expectation is being with Damon. An idea she hasn’t let herself entertain until recently because she knew how everyone else would react if she actually gave into her feelings. And when he grabbed for her hand, the emotions she’d buried around him for so many months started to surface. They made her want to give in, pushed her to indulge what had been burning between them since the day she stepped into the boarding house for the first time. That’s what propelled her out of the room. If she’d stayed in bed with him any longer she would’ve caved to her own desire for him. Her own craving for this dark, forbidden man that had done so many terrible, loving things in her name. But Damon refuses to let things rest. He continues to poke and prod until he receives a different response. So he followed her. With his shirt still unbuttoned. Looking like straight sex. And she finally snapped, kissing him with the kind of wild intensity only he can bring out in her. She kissed him without restraint, with no barriers between them and no illusions about where they would go from that point. It was her way of saying that she does have feelings for him, undefined as they were in her mind. She wanted him. She was comfortable with him. She trusted him. Maybe even love him. She just couldn’t say any of that aloud. She couldn’t admit it verbally. She wasn’t ready. And which is where their fight at Scary Mary’s came into play. Where her denial about him and them finally started to bite her in the ass. Because this time, instead of taking a backseat to Stefan or doing something that could jeopardize his chances with her, Damon lets her know that he won’t back down this time. That there won’t be a bump, that he isn’t going to make it easy for her to crawl back to his brother and hide behind that relationship. If she really was beginning to embrace the idea of being with him, he was going to make sure she truly considered it, truly looked at him as an option, as someone she could love. I think it remains one of their best fights to date, just as the scene at the motel remains one of their best Kisses. Passion. These two and passion are the definition of intense chemistry. Coming back to Damon’s dialogue about not wanting to live up to people’s expectations speaks specifically to Elena in many ways although Damon was talking about himself, it hits Elena deep. She is a girl who tries to live up to everyone’s expectations. I don’t remember exactly but in the pilot episode, it was mentioned that people look up to Elena, she has to set an example. The cheerleader who’s actually miserable cheerleading. The girl who’d sign up for the Miss Mystic Falls pageant because her mother wanted her to. Elena lives to please everyone else but herself. And no it’s not to say that there is anything wrong in her being a kind, compassionate and thoughtful person but she forgets herself in all of this many times and that’s not so great because when people see the good in her, they instantly start believing that everything she does or thinks to do has to be nothing but black and white including herself. Whereas Damon has learnt from his own experiences that it’s very hard to live that way. I think even Stefan suffers from the same complex many times. When he goes on his bunny diet and tries to live like a human being in almost every sense and then he hits rock bottom; he is drowned in guilt but why? Because he thinks that now there is no chance of redemption. Although I'm really happy for him because in this episode, he has finally accepted that if he wants to be in control he has accept his dark parts too. You might not like it but at least acknowledge it. "Own it, live it, love it and stop being ashamed of yourself" is back at play here. Damon is a good person at his heart and we know that because we get to see him caring for someone like Rose selflessly. He gave her the chance to die without fear and he never mentioned it to another soul. Because of course it’s not about them so why should they know? Secondly because the good he does is because he wants to do it not because someone else has told him to do it or are expecting of him. And that way when he has to make tough decisions and allow his dark side to take over for surviving and take care of those around him. So I don’t always agree that Elena is the reason he is good because it’s not fully the truth but her faith in him is what makes it okay for him to allow himself to be comforted at times and to be his vulnerable self. To believe that it's okay let people know he has heart that knows how to care and love but again being too vulnerable isn't always good and he knows it. I love how we all have understood and recognised that Elena being the human in this triangle is someone who sees things very black and white but she is slowly learning with each experience that isn't the case. People can be good but also have bad in them given the circumstances. When she found out about Stefan's ripper side in Chicago, she was trying to make herself feel better about it by comparing it with Damon and ask him what was he up to at that period of time? But my darling that's now how it works. You have to see a person as a whole for who they're and then it's your choice of whether you want to be accepting them or not.

Shout to out my darling Rose❤️I miss her so much and love her immensely. I am so grateful to writers for bringing back Rose in this episode and that too for such an important scene and milestone in the show! I honestly believed that if Rose was still around; Damon and Rose would have been epic duo whether as friends or more. I think they shared great understanding between each other and both were able to read one another well. And now we can say that she is officially the first delena shipper on the show😍I mean who better than her to speak about Damon and Elena's complex and complicated relationship. She has known Damon closely and read him like an open book in no time. She knows his depth of love and care for those he gets close with and in her afterlife, surely has been seeing everything else with regards to Elena and Stefan. And I loved that she didn't say that Stefan wasn't the right choice for Elena because that's choice she has to make on her own but he is always going to be good for her and we can agree on many accounts that is true till now. But he also goes through lows in his life and how does he handle it? Does he stay good to her? Makes one think. Damon on the other hand doesn't put himself on a pedestal or those around him. He lets people be who they're and that's how he sees them. He is going to be the best because he challenges Elena and doesn't pretend to be someone else for her to be okay with him. He knows he screws many times but that he doesn't justify himself for. So now people can choose to see him for exactly how he wants them to see him as unless of course you're observant and smart to find more depth. Why can he be the worst? Because there is no in between with him. If he loves you, he will do anything in the world for you whether you agree with it or not and that can be overwhelming. In short, applaud worth writing! These dialogues weren't sugarcoated. It was the truth stated by an outsider because she isn't a part of this herself but she has great insights so it's the perfect balance. And Harry I loved that you said that if Elena is going to be making the choice, she should be not making someone feel trash for them being themselves and that should apply to herself too. Yes, people should always want to be better and learn from their share of mistakes and wrong doings (subjective) but then again don't have the wrong idea of someone in your own head.

The comment made by Damon to Elena about expectations regarding other people and what Rose said to Jeremy are essential to the story of TVD about becoming an adult, accepting who you are, and leaving behind Pre-misconceptions or adjusting to what life throws our way. We see Elena struggling with her growing feelings toward Damon and the fear of being judged by her friends. Elena is not ready to leave what she knows to embrace the unknown. I understand her worries about the bumps regarding Damon. Still, she is also hiding under those concerns because she has seen the good and bad behavior between the two brothers, and jet she holds Damon accountable? Why not hold Stefan responsible too? The reason: Elena is not ready yet to take that step of the unknown but instead settles for what she knows. In addition, keep in mind that we hold accountable the people we care about. I loved it when Damon told Elena that he would not make her decision easier for her, proving to Elena that he doesn't always slash out with the bumps on the road. Character growth for Damon 👏. I love how Stefan accepts that the ripper is part of who he is even though he tried to bury that side of himself; he knows that it will not go away. Character growth for Stefan.👏 Both brothers show character growth, while Elena struggles to accept her feelings. Becoming an adult is not an easy journey. There will be bumps along the road. What Rose said to Jeremy is gold and brilliant—saying that to Jeremy, a 17-year-old, about the complexities of the relationship between Damon and Elena, which a young person often omits about how complicated relationships between two people can be that is not only about the romance but also about the journey and growth as a person. What Rose said to Jeremy implicates the type of relationship between Damon and Elena to Stefan and Elena. It is interesting what Rose said about Damon being either the best or the worst for Elena and that Stefan will always be good to her. The key phrase is “good to her.” For Elena, it will be good for her to get what she wants but is it the best for her? Stefan agrees with Elena, but he doesn't challenge Elena's spunky personality, which leads to no growth. Now with the phrase, either the best or the worst can only lead to learning from the experience that will eventually lead to learning.
