Elena’s choice. I agree with you, I don’t believe that Elena’s choice was about who she loves the most. She said to Matt about Stefan “He came into my life when I needed someone.” Then she said to Damon “Maybe if you and I met first.” as If maybe if you were the person there for me to help me to go through the grieving of my parent’s death. So it was a matter of who came first and if Damon pursued her right after he arrived in town he could have been easily the one she fell for not Stefan. Also when Elena this season talks about her feelings for Stefan she never talk about her feeling now, but always refer to the past. It is understandable her and Stefan never really split up like a normal couple they were torn apart by Klaus' actions. So there was never a chosen closure between them. But still, her feeling for Stefan are very much connected with her past. Elena: “It’s like I knew he would never stop loving me. Like he would never die.” Matt: “Like your parents did.” “After the accident it felt like I didn’t know how to live anymore. Then being with Stefan, I kinda figured it out.” Stefan came into Elena’s life when she was very vulnerable and what it is happening with Alaric is bringing everything back. All the memories she has during the day, was all about the parallel of the current situation with her past. The point is what will happen when she will move on from the grieving, from the past, what significance will Stefan have in her life? And we know already that the writers by making us see that actually Damon made her first are actually telling us that she is wrong. When Damon said Stefan is always be Stefan” she answer “I can’t think about always. All I can think about is the right now”. She loves them both but Stefan is the safest option, is the past, is what she knows, Damon is the unknown in a possible future that she can’t see right now, not until she has closure and moves on. She will have to close the character of her life connected with her past before starting to think about her future. Stefan choice. When I say that is not healthy never to argue about your partner choices and always do what the partner says, even against logic, common sense and feelings that is what I meant. That is not respecting your partner choice that is co-dependency that is a specific mental issues that Stefan definitely has and it is dangerous. And the writers show us exactly that. Stefan by doing without questioning what Elena told him to do, killed her, he is the reason she is now a vampire. Imagine she didn't had vampire blood in her system, Matt would be alive and Elena would be dead. Imagine having the love or your life in that situation, would you do that? Would you risk killing the love of your life? That is the point that the writers want us to ponder about. Be in disagreement, arguing and acting not according to your partners will , but by the genuine feeling of doing the right thing for your partner isn't wrong, it's normal, if it comes from the selfless place that is true love and the real concern for the well being of your loved one. That is the difference between a normal relationship and an unhealthy co-dependency. I wouldn’t say that Damon is on the other side of the spectrum, because Damon intervene drastically against Elena will only when she was in real danger to die and her being so bend in self-sacrificing herself to the point of almost being a dead seeker, because of her survivor guilt, I would say that he intervene as any loving human being would, because Elena will not be always in this state of mind, and when she will eventually process her traumas and move on, she will be glad that someone gave her the chance to get there. There are so freaking many implications looking back at past episodes with the revealing the little scene between Damon and Elena how the meet. He compelled her to get what she want, that is “a love that consumes her, adventure and a little danger” that basically is the picture of Damon, but having her to forget that they met set her in motion, that Stefan is the next best thing. The point is that when the show will end you will have so many information about everything that would shed an entire new light on everything and that is the re-watchability factor this show has, knowing what you know, it will be an entire new show and lots of things will make so much more sense. Just about this first meeting of Damon and Elena, couple of little things on the top of my mind that now make sense: 1) Season one episode 2 Damon in Elena’s room while she is sleeping caressing her cheeks, now make sense.. 2) Remember when they were in bed together in Elena’s room an Elena was telling Damon about Rebekah, the words that she uses are strangely close to what Damon said to her in their first meeting and Damon look at her in a puzzled way and we pointed this at you to remember it. That is the connection, because his puzzled face was a reaction to this, “does she remember what I told her when we first met?” And the show go back and forward with this connections and the more we go more into the story the more connections to past seasons will make, explain things, giving them a extra layers, and adding complexity to the characters. Absolutely unique.

Sorry for the lenght of my post but boy this episode is so emormous and complex and touches so many things, that is impossible to be more succinct.

What do I even say about this finale? It's the best finale episodes in my view because the angst, intensity and the various emotions the characters and the viewers end up going through is cruel yet so good. Everyone in this episode was going through the fear of losing their loved ones whether it was the Salvatores, Gilberts, Originals, Forbes and Lockwood's. It's amazing how people think vampires are the threatening ones for the humans, when all of them are always trying to survive and keep those that care about alive too. I really am surprised with how beautifully you analysed Elena's decision in this episode Harry. I think it's very difficult to watch this episode and not believe that this was her final decision. Yes, it can argued that she was pushed to the edge and made to choose in the most terrifying situation henceforth she made the more predictable choice. But in the end, it was a choice and I think more than the situation, Damon made her choose when he wanted the final answer. He was alone and if he did die, it would be alone which is heartbreaking to think because he asks her and gets heart broken once again. Now, I don't hold it against Elena because I don't think she owes anything to either of the Salvatores though my heart does break for Damon. Yet I can't help feel bad for Elena too because she herself must be feeling torn. Personally, though I love Damon and Elena, I do believe at this point, it still had to be Stefan. I can't emphasis enough on how well this damn show is written and executed. I love how the writers chose this path for human Elena to die. Stefan had saved her that night and changed the course of her life but she always ended up feeling guilty for surviving. This time, she chose to let herself stay down there and drown. He was the one to save her and this time he let her die. It's a full circle. So now where are they headed? I never understood how Stefan could let this happen though....I know Elena had asked him to save Matt first but seriously it's shocking. At this point, no one knew that Elena had vampire blood in her system and if she truly didn't, she would have just died. How could one possibly leave their dearest one do to just die? I know Matt is also a close friend but still it's Elena we're talking about here. I think these are the exact moments when we are made to question whether Stefan truly can be good for her? “You are not dead. You are not dead.” This is without question the most underrated Damon and Elena saving of all time. It never gets proper mention because they weren’t physically together when it happened. But this is definitely their best. A sign of how transcendent their love for each other really is. Because it was mutual. It is a singular instance where Elena unknowingly saved Damon and in the same instant, he unknowingly saved her. But this is definitely their best. A sign of how transcendent their love for each other really is. Because it was mutual. It is a singular instance where Elena unknowingly saved Damon and in the same instant, he unknowingly saved her. They would both surely have died. They were both in situations that without the other’s assistance, would’ve been their end. They would’ve had to find each other on the Other Side. Elena went off Wickery Bridge again. And drowned this time. Damon was outmatched by newly Original vampire Ric, who was literally beating him to death without any remorse or sign of stopping. He absolutely would’ve killed Damon if he’d been given the chance. He wasn’t. Because Elena died and took him with her, thereby saving Damon’s life from miles and miles away. And as Elena drowned beneath that bridge she set her own resurrection in motion. A resurrection only made possible by Damon’s blood running in her veins at the time of her demise. He saved Elena’s life from miles and miles away. They saved each other. At the exact same time. And ensured their imminent reunion, which they believed would never happen as they both thought they wouldn’t survive the night.

“So Damon, tell me, what is it that I want?” “You want a love that consumes you. You want passion, adventure, and even a little danger." This is the obvious choice. Although I love and appreciate everything about their second and third first meetings, I will always have a soft spot for their real first meeting. Because it truly symbolizes everything that is so incredible about their story and their relationship. I mean where do I even begin? With the fact that we didn’t even know they met the night her parents died until the finale of season three. That we found out on the heels of Elena choosing Stefan over Damon. Or that Elena herself never knew, and Damon never told her. Maybe that their entire conversation was nothing but foreshadowing for their relationship. Perhaps that it says so much about the direction they have both been heading in their entire lives. There’s volumes to write about this singular event. As it is, it remains to this day the most shocking revelation in TVD history. But what I love so much about it is how isolated it is from the rest of their journey. Although it is their real beginning, a moment which set them on a course that could only lead to each other, it stands out above and beyond every other interaction they have ever shared. Because Damon and Elena met at a time when Stefan was not a factor. When grief and loss and morals were not a factor. When death and the implications of vampirism and destiny were not a factor. In this one scene, there was nothing between them. Nothing pressuring them. Nothing dictates the nature of their relationship. They were just two beautiful strangers who crossed paths on an abandoned road, had a compelling, flirtatious, symbolic conversation, and unknowingly altered their very futures because of it. Elena was human and sixteen, untainted by the weight of agony that came with losing her parents and nearly dying for the first time. She was just a fun loving teenage girl who was uninterested in the future her current boyfriend had planned for them. And she chooses to share this with the mysterious stranger. And on the precipice of a life changing event that would set the tone of the rest of her life, she met Damon. The catalyst for everything good and bad that would follow her parents’ accident. Yet all she saw when she met him was how unlike everyone else he was. How different he appeared in comparison to those she had spent her life around. How dangerous, but not in a way that scared her. In a way that excited her. Because he exuded the potential for possibility. For opportunity. It's amazing how Elena doesn't remember the first meeting but if you go back to season 1, you would see how Elena keeps looking at Damon when she first time meets him in the Salvatore as if trying to recall from she knows him? And this habit of sharing things with him continues through out because he is able to read her. “You want a love that consumes you. You want passion, adventure, and even a little danger.” Put another way, she wanted Damon. Not that either of them were thinking along those lines at the time. Still the symbolism is there. It’s exactly why this moment was revealed to us, and to Elena, after she chose Stefan. A choice she made out of obligation, in fear of the repercussions she believed would come with choosing Damon. And I think this night-the night she went of the Wickery bridge and died for real, she wasn't ready to embrace the kind of life she always wanted because human Elena has always been too occupied with the expectations around her. So lets see how does Vampire Elena happen to think when she finds out all about the compulsions Damon has chosen to go ahead with and her reaction. Damon was the first one to meet Elena and in an instant he knew that she wasn't Katherine. She was Elena and he wished her to find everything she is looking for and left her alone that night, making sure she wouldn't remember him or the conversation. Simply put he wished her the best and didn't want to impose himself in her life at this point. He didn't need months to stalk her and confirm that she wasn't Katherine. Just saying 😂

I remember Harry when you were at the finale of season one and ranked the season 10 out of 10 and we all were gigling thinking " believe us...it gets better and better..."

this is by far my favorite reaction to this episode, it was so entertaining and so fun to hear your thoughts on it. definitely gonna rewatch this lmao and also, i love how well you understand the characters in this show. i feel like youre one of the few people who really understand elena and try to see things from her pov, its refreshing :)

j-l

holy shit, the last two points. i never thought of that. thank you for pointing that out! i always thought of damons reaction to what elena said ab rebekah as him noticing that elena realized that she relates to her. and that that is how he also feels and feels about her. it looked like hope, and it makes even more sense now with what you pointed out.

Harry, I asked how you would feel about how Elena made her choice, and I am impressed with your answer. Honestly, if Elena chose me the way she did for Stefan, I wouldn't be happy. I would let her go. Why? If we listen to her conversation and pay attention to her body language, it leaves no thought she made that choice with her mind, with her perceived obligations. Not her heart, and how could she under those circumstances? Change is not easy, nor becoming an adult, and Elena is not ready to let go of her fleeing young girl mindset. Now becoming a vampire, how will it change her? We will see. Harry, I agree with you. Elena didn't make a choice. She didn't deal with the matter of her heart but went ahead with what she already knew.

Patpet

The connections back and forward we are going to get from now on are so freaking complex that some to make them it took me more that one rewatching.

Patpet

I totally agree, it is difficult to find someone that undestand Elena's character with such a clarity. I am impressed because Harry is so young and yet possess such an intelligent maturity when analysing complex human conditions and behaviour that is way beyond his age. Such a clever perceptive person.

Maribel Humble

Yes, Harry, it is so refreshing to see someone with compassion for Elena's predicament. Thank you.

For fun: the writers gave us hints that Damon and Elena meet first. In the pilot, when Elena goes to the cemetery, the song playing in that scene by One Republic, “All I need,” says that she lost her heart and how things didn't turn up how she wanted. In the third episode, when Damon touches her cheek and smiles tenderly while Elena is sleeping, Damon reminisces about that encounter with Elena. Some people claim that it was because of Katherine, but if we pay attention to how Damon looks at Katherine's picture, Damon doesn't have the same facial expressions as he does with Elena in that scene. In the fourth episode, when Elena reads the guest registry from 1864, the first name she reads is Damon, even though his name is beneath Stefan. Now do people read from the bottom up, or are the writers trying to tell us something?🤔🤣In the sixth episode, when Stefan was showing Elena the old house where he and Damon grew up, Elena crossed the fence when Stefan mentioned Damon's name. Right after crossing that entrance, we see a flashback of the brothers playing football, and the first brother to come out of the house is Damon. In the third season, when Elena describes the way Rebekah loves Damon, his facial expression is gold because he is wondering if Elena remembered their first encounter.

Maribel Humble

Fun stuff from this episode: Damon is the brother Jeremy calls about Elena's visit to the hospital. When Matt asked Elena who she was going to let go right at that moment, Stefan walked inside her house. Harry, you did pick up on this 🤣After Elena woke up inside Matt’s truck, he asked Elena if he could “keep driving toward Danon “ or turn back to where everyone else was. The fact that Matt was already driving toward Damon speaks volumes. What I love about this is that Matt doesn't judge Elena for her feelings. He knew that Elena loved Damon. Elena couldn't call Stefan because her cell phone was “ dying .” 🤔Like, Archna said that even though Damon and Elena were not in the exact location but still, they saved each other “Lives” is symbolic. Even after Rebekah physically tortured Damon, his first reaction was to yell at Rebekah to run away from the storage warehouse when Alaric was going to stake her next. As a veteran, Damon has my respect because even though he knew Alaric was going to kill him, Damon was going to face Alaric till the end. Now, what does Damon do when Alaric almost stakes him? He thinks about Elena for strength to keep going against Alaric in this dire situation. Facing Alaric was no small task either. In the previous episode, Damon, Stefan, and Klaus couldn't even hold down Alaric. He would have to kill Klaus if not for Elena to intervention hence saving that original line. It takes Tyler, Damon, and Stefan to take down Klaus to help Bonnie with her spell against Klaus.

Elena asking Stefan to save Matt is a controversial topic of much-heated debate. One day I asked my husband to watch that scene so he could tell me his thoughts on this. He watched the scene quietly and left the living room. I found him in the kitchen, and his shoulders were shaking. I knew something was wrong, so I asked him. He told me that scene triggered an incident while deployed with his fellow Marines in Afghanistan. One of the military vehicles drove over one hidden bomb buried in the road while several Marines were inside the vehicle. When my husband got to that vehicle, all the Marines died except for the passenger in the front. The driver was enveloped in flames, but the passenger was still alive. That Marine asked my husband to save the driver first, but the driver was not moving, so my husband pulled out the passenger instead. That Marine was angry at my husband for a while, but later, he understood why my Husband did it. My husband said what Stefan did is not logical; under that circumstance, anyone will save whoever is conscious first. Saving the unconscious person first, one will run the risk of not saving anybody. Now, my argumentative side will say that what Stefan did in granting Elena's wishes was wrong and unnatural seeing a loved one in that predicament. Our instinct is to save them. My compassionate side of me can't help but notice that Stefan and Elena are emotionally disturbed. Elena suffers from survival guilt issues, and Stefan from co-dependence issues, as PatPet mentioned. Elena didn't know for sure that Matt was alive, but she still asked Stefan to save him first. Stefan and Elena, wasting precious time while debating who to save first. Stefan always complying with Elena's wishes, even against logic or reason, is not healthy for any individual as a person or in a relationship. Are Stefan and Elena good for each other? My answer is no because they are like two youngsters stuck in a hole, unwilling to grow as a couple and individuals. Now, even if it goes all to hell with Damon, even if Damon is “selfish,” he does challenge Elena's beliefs, and that gives room to grow.
