2x05 Stefan: "If I say 'I can't do this anymore Elena' what I'll really mean is that I love you." Elena: "And when I say 'Fine Stefan, whatever' it really means that I love you too." 4x06 Stefan: "I can't do this Elena. Not anymore." Elena: "I know." I don't know if the writers meant for these scenes to reflect each other so Beautifully but to me, it feels like Stefan's last-ditch effort in reaching out to Elena and trying to save their relationship and when she doesn't reach back he knows it is over. It is so sad to see but such good writing if it was intentional.

Seeing Elena being tortured by the Hunters' Curse for a single day was brutal. To think that Klaus had to go through that for 52 years is mind boggling. This also happened to him early on in his vampire life. That amount of psychological torture must have had an impact on his psyche. Love him or hate him, he's a very interesting and complex character.

In this episode, here we have Damon being amazing, once again. He noticed that he and Elena were getting closer in the moment, and he thought of Stefan. Damon thought of just how guilty he was for being in love with his brother’s girl. Elena was upset with Stefan, but Damon knew things that Elena did not know. He could have easily taken advantage of the fact that Elena thought negatively of Stefan. But he didn’t. He wants Elena to know the truth. Even though he knows that the information will probably make Elena go crawling back to Stefan, he tells her anyway because he wants to always be honest with her. Even if that means that he won’t be happy. All he wants is for her to be happy, even if it’s with Stefan. He doesn’t want her to only be with him because she didn’t want to be with Stefan. He wants it to be real. Elena's feelings have been magnified for Damon as per Stefan's understanding. But why is that? It's because her feelings for Damon were stronger and she as a human has tried to bury those feelings very deep. But when she turned into a vampire; those feelings have been magnified and she no longer can bury them. As a vampire she has become this person who no longer is afraid to accept things like she feared disappointing people as a human and continued to live a lie until the truth was hitting right in the face. Elena had never planned to have feelings for both the brothers, but she ended up with those feelings and I personally think she did her best to be respectful about it. The ending of episode was a beautiful moment. I think it was after a long time, both Stefan and Elena sat down and had an honest conversation. After Stefan returned in S3, many things had already changed between them but there was an attempt to make things go back to the way they were before Stefan had left with Klaus in S2. However, now these two have figured out that there's no point in continuing this when they both know it's never going to be the same. Everything has changed. It's not to say that they don't love each other but Elena is no longer in love Stefan, and he has accepted it; when he figured out that she was going to be honest with him and tell him that she was feeling different, and her feelings have grown stronger than ever for Damon. Harry, I love how you don't simplify the fact that human Elena was suited for Stefan and Vampire Elena is better suited for Damon because it's not the truth and that is just lessening the impact of the complexity these relationships have endured and survived. And I am with you Harry; I am not a fan of Klaus and Caroline and their possibility of being a couple. I think Caroline was being slightly insensitive about Tyler's feelings for Chris and his death. I suppose being a vampire and a werewolf in a relationship has its consequences which is starting to come to the front. Tyler is going to fight for his pack and Caroline has to figure out her stance on these battles amongst the vampire gang and werewolf gang.

I think we can safely say that Stefan and Elena as a couple are no more, because you cannot come back from that honest conversation, especially because now is out in the open she has feelings for Damon and she didn’t say it to a friend, she admit it to Stefan and that admission to him has a different weight, because they arrive to a point that they cannot pretend that things between them are as they used to be, that Elena is the same kid she used to be when they first meet, too much has happened. Her feeling for Damon has been magnified because they were there in the first place, and the feelings for Stefan have not because even though she does love him, they have history together, she is not in love with him anymore, but not now she is a vampire but before. Teen love does not necessarily translate into adult love, because people change, mature, wants different things and while as human she could pretend and deny those feelings, now she can’t any longer, Elena is not the defenceless little kid unaware of the world around her as she was when she meet Stefan. But even if Elena stayed human, she would have had face the fact that she is in love with Damon and not anymore with Stefan, anyway. And that is a realisation that she wasn’t fully aware before because she was a kid and after because she was dealing with things that were bringing her back to the past, but recently her incompatibility with Stefan has came to light unquestionably. Is not that she is only in love with Damon, it is the fact that she is not compatible with Stefan and that incompatibility when she was a kid could be glanced over because she loved him and pass over so many things, now that she is more mature, and she knows Stefan and Damon way better, things have become apparent. I remember her saying to Matt in season two when she split up with Stefan “there so many things between me and Stefan that will never work out”, I remember Stefan season one withholding so many information to her and talking his way out to how and why he didn’t tell her things, and she let him, not in this episode, she is telling him off on that, because she is an adult now he cannot sweet talk her, or manipulate her anymore, she is aware now of Stefan flaws. I love how the writer handle things in a very realistic manner, when you are in love with someone your partner flaws get glanced over but when you are not in love anymore that person habits or manner get you annoyed; her getting annoyed to Stefan’s withholding information and try to allegedly sweet talk his way out of it, is her not being in love with him anymore and using Stefan’s flaws to pushing him away. And that is in my opinion the moment of Stefan’s realisation, she has never pushed him away before. Damon never lies to her, and every time they were getting close, he always remind her about his brother. He is wonderfully selfless with them both, because Damon truly loves them. He is truly in love with her, he wants her, badly, but not at the expenses of fairness, free will, and informed circumstances, so he always try to patch them up. And all of this has been sunk in into Elena’s consciousness for sometimes and has played a role in who is closer to her sensibility and who is not. Caroline “the perfect“ isn’t perfect, as anybody, her traits of being little insensitive and inappropriate are still there, and they became apparent in this episode with Tyler, he is her boyfriend but she cannot see his point of view, because her close circle of friends are more important of his new friends and she doesn’t understand the concept of pact. Also let’s admit it, she is secretly flattered by the fact that she is the only one having Klaus, the most powerful creature on the planet, wrapped around her little finger and that she can afford to treat him as she pleased without any consequence. The scene at the grill when she told him about Elena escaping was hilarious, anybody else would be so dead. I do agree that even if their dynamic is hugely entertaining, I wouldn’t want to see them as a couple, they are so polar opposite, but opposite attract.... Could she manage to change him?

If you see your partner with a facial expression of contempt, ladies, and gentlemen, pack your bags because the relationship is over. That is Elena's facial expression when she told Stefan not to sweet-talk his way out of it. Elena's behavior toward Stefan is not solely because she has feelings for Damon but primarily due to all the secrets Stefan keeps hidden, which Elena repeatedly uncovers for herself. And like PatPet said, Elena's glace over Stefan is gone, or her blindfold is gone. She has been down that road with Stefan beforehand. Elena has experienced too much to take the bait. Now Elena is not the naive and grieving young girl that Stefan knew.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your insight and compassion for the characters in this show. I absolutely love how you understand the complexity of the writing of the show as well. Btw...I literally hated Niklaus Mikaelson in TVD BUT he literally became my favorite character of all time and I cannot foresee any other character in ANY series or movie holding a candle to Klaus. I'm literally so obsessed ish(not in a stalking way) with the characters and actors of this show that I have actually gotten the chance to meet AND talk with Joseph Morgan, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder. They are AMAZING!! Oh and jic you were wondering...they ALL look even better in person believe it or not!! I swear Ian actually has this glow about him...I can't even describe. ;)
