What I love about TVD is the fact that thanks to vampires the writers can explore the human condition, what makes us human, how emotions define us. Basically to explain who we are and what define us, TVD is a good guide. And Damon, once again, saves the situation, he knows Elena, he knows what are her triggers, and Matt the only innocent her best friends since childhood, represent everything of her life, her connection to her past, her family, her history, her major events, Matt was there, was close friend to Jeremy too. The love she has for Matt and what he signify to her was their best shot, losing him meant loosing the last link she has with her past and her family, that means so much to Elena. So she is back and her first emotion is revenge. Let’s see how this pan out. Let’s go to the next episode....

Katharine is so proud that she has not turned off her humanity, but why would she if she only cares about herself? Love is a complex emotion that requires sacrifice, generosity, and trust, which are qualities Katherine doesn't have.

Rohan Aslam

I disagree tbh, at the very beginning of her journey as a vampire she had her entire family that she loved and cared for slaughtered by a psychopath and right then and there she could've easily turned her humanity off but didn't. She has sacrificed her safety from Klaus when trying to get Stefan to save Damon's life in 3x09, and exhibited trust in Elijah in 4x18 when giving him the cure. So In my opinion, Katherine cares about herself much more than others but she does not ONLY care about herself. She's had many traumatic eventsoccur in her life that she could've turned her emotions off which would've made life easier for her, as like you said she 'only cares for herself' but has never. Her emotional strength in that aspect is honestly admirable. (not bashing Elena or any other character that turns off their humanity as I would probs too if I could lmao).

@RohanAslan Strongly disagree. None of the characters in TVD are shallow and everybody to certain degree, is the hero of their own story. But Katherine is written as a villain, clearly, that ruined the life of many people out of pure selfishness. Everybody have to survive here not only Katherine, but she is using (Damon, Elijah), turning people against their will (Stefan), manipulating (everybody), sleeping her way around (Mason and many others), plotting, having people killed (eg Jeremy, Jenna, Amy), ruined (eg. Rose and her friend), only to advantage herself. The fact that she is showing sometimes some redeemable qualities it is because you cannot make a character only purely evil, without making it looking fake, not believable. And even though Katherine is highly entertaining, it is not to be admired, in any way. Elena had her entire family dead, her biological parents, her brother, her ant killed, her friend guardian Alaric dead, she was chased by Klaus just the same, and she never showed any bone of selfishness in her body, she rather die than having anybody arm in anyway on her account, quite the opposite of Katherine, that looks after number one at anybody's expenses always. She doesn't turn her humanity off because when you are emotionless, you become reckless and don't care about anybody yourself included and you are probably get yourself killed and she cares much to much about herself not to be in control on every aspect of herself.

Rohan Aslam, even a serial killer, shows some humanity but it doesn't make them good human beings. Edmund Kemper surrendered to the authorities because he knew he would not stop killing. Dennis Rader was a Boy Scout troop leader and church council president, but for 30 years, he was secretly the BTK murderer — while looking like the perfect family man to his neighbors in Kansas. Ted Bundy was charismatic to those people who didn't know him. He used what society considers good behavior against his victims. Psychopaths can't always indulge in malevolent behavior because they would be caught sooner. One of Ted Bundy's negative personality traits was Machiavellianism, meaning strategic exploitation and deceit. Machiavellianism has similar traits as a dark empath, and Katherine falls under the dark empath category. Dark Empaths are considered more dangerous than a psychopath, narcissistic and antisocial. You see, a psychopath can’t understand the feelings and thoughts of others, but a dark empath can and uses that information to manipulate others. A dark empath uses cognitive empathy at the expense of others, often for personal gain. They can recognize someone's situation without sympathizing with them. Katherine was very good at recognizing someone's situation to manipulate and use it to her advantage. Yes, we do see Katherine having feelings for Stefan, but being a psychopath or dark empath doesn't mean that individual doesn't have emotions, but they do lack empathy. Some fans say that Katherine is the way she is due to running away from Klaus, but Rose did the same thing running away from Klaus and didn't turn out like Katherine, but the contrary. Rose values humanity. Rebekah was emotionally abused and betrayed constantly but still didn't turn out like Katherine either. Even after a thousand years, Rebehak's value the most was to be human and have a simple life.

🙌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 What a fabulous informative comment. Thank you.

Rohan Aslam

thanks for your perspective, those are some really good points tbh. However I definitely am not saying Katherine is a good person at all, realistically the majority of the characters on the show aren't. Katherine was 100% written as a villain I agree, but to say she only cares about herself I believe isn't accurate . She is extremely selfish yes, puts herself above others yes, and although other characters such as rose like you brought up have been in the same situation as her (being on the run for 5 centuries) and having a different outcome on her personality, its understandable why Katherine acts like she does, she has had to be selfish to stop herself from getting hurt. Personally, I believe that if Katherine had the same support that elena had, with people that stood by her side at the very beginning when dealing with Klaus then her character would've been drastically different. But I 100% understand your view and really have learnt a lot from your comment, it was really interesting! thank you

@Rohan Aslam, again sorry to disagree, the conversation is most interesting. Nobody in TVD is entirely evil, because otherwise it would be flat and cartoonish, not believable. But let's not confuse the tiny little redeeming qualities Katherine have for something that qualify her less that utterly despicable. The point of Katherine is that she is the inverse mirror of Elena, similar circumstances very different choices. Elena is surrounded by people that wanted to love her and protect her, because she chose to be loved and protected. Katherine had so many chances in her life to be loved by so many people and she always chosen to betray the very people that would have loved her and protect her, starting with Elijah, Trevor, Damon, Mason even Stefan and so many others we don't know but are mentioned as in love with her, "under her spell". Katherine life is Katherine doing, she chose to be alone, running and scheming and killing and betraying everybody that loves her, contrary to Elena that chose the man that loved her the most, that she love the most, keeping her exes as friends, and being surrounded by the love of her friends, she chose to love back deeply, pledging her life for their safety. So let's not justify Katherine for her own doing, because in the show everybody is a survivor, lost family and friends, even Matt, but nobody choose to act like Katherine does, deeply selfishly bad to everybody's expanses and than complain she is alone...no wonder.

@ Rohan Aslam, thank you for your compliments. It is refreshing to have a civil conversation about TVD. I will be discussing the topic of psychopaths in more detail in season five. Katherine also had Emily Bennett who was a powerful witch in the Bennett line. Most of those tomb vampires from 1864 looked up to Katherine whom she betrayed. Among those 27 vampires trapped in the tomb was Pearl who Katherine “consider” a friend.

I know this is late and you probably wont see it but I just love it when the brothers work together because they make such an amazing team when they are on the same page. Damon was so smart to use Matt to bring Elena’s emotions and humanity back. He realized that threatening Elena with pain and torturing her was never going to work. Elena has always put her friends above herself, always willing to sacrifice herself for the people she loves. So it makes perfect sense that watching someone he loves die in front of her and then feeling the relief that he was still alive is so good. Not only that but the fact that its Matt? The one she chose to save instead of herself. She already sacrificed her life for him once. It’s actually incredibly cathartic. But then, once Elena’s humanity comes back its when Stefan steps in and keeps her there, helping her tap into her emotions. Even if the emotion was ultimately anger, he kept her from going over the edge again and getting so overwhelmed that she might have turned it back off. And Damon understands that Stefan is better prepared to talk her through this, holding Elena and then stepping away to let them have this moment. It's actually quite beautiful. I just love how they worked together here and used their own strengths to help the woman they love.
