On campus, Elena is touched by a sad and secretive student named Aaron. Elena and Damon attend the Whitmore Historical Ball dressed as Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII. At the Ball, Elena shares a dance with Dr. Maxfield, who has a disturbing message for her. Caroline's evening at the Ball takes her from happiness to heartbreak. Meanwhile, Nadia reveals her surprising history to Katherine, and Damon tries to make a deal with Silas. Silas demands that Damon commit an unthinkable act, which leads to a violent confrontation.

Katherine is like a cockroach, even if you try to kill her, she spring back to life, she is so scare of dying that her will to be alive is more powerful than anything and she can find even the slightest chance to d be alive she would take it. Her fear of death is real. Another way she is the opposite mirror to Elena that has no fear of death at the point that she would really willing to die for any of her friends and loved one. What is noticeable, in this episode is also Damon, he is no more under the grip of his love for Katherine, she was his first love and somehow, he always had a little regard for her. Not anymore. His life now is very different from when he came to Mystic Falls, where his only hope for love was to resurrect Katherine, a woman that was responsible to ruin the relationship with his brother that play them always against them, that use them both, that how desperate for love he was, even for a fake one. Since then, little by little his life changed drastically, now he has a real love and his life is full of family and friends he cares about, deeply and there is no way he is willing to lose that. Strangely enough, Bonnie is one of those people, he cares about, not just because of Elena, but because he has great respect for her, because she is an important part of the group, a tight group that help and love each other. As usual is always Damon that gets the brilliant ideas to sort out situations; swapping Silas for Bonnie, who cares about consequences? That is not how Damon operates, he deals with thing one at the time, doing something extremely dangerous and dealing with the after effect after he got what they were after. And since they don’t know what consequences there are going to be, why worry now, let’s concentrate on finding a way to bring Bonnie back. Katherine for Bonnie , it doesn’t seems a thought decision to him anymore, but more of an obvious choice that Damon doesn’t hesitate to take, he choose family and friend over the past, and ironically he uses her to make that choice, the one that had never put love or others before herself. TVD message at the end of the day has always been, get rid of the hatred, passed from generation to generation, for what is different from what you know and find love and harmony and community in the people around you. That was the task of our group form the very beginning, the task of Mystic Falls new generation, to change history and to change their path. And while everybody is succeeding in the task, fighting against the past prejudice, embracing their differences, considering it as normalcy and use their different skills as a group advantage, Tyler is failing miserably. Everybody is moving forward, Tyler is concentrated on revenge and negativity, removing himself from the group. IT is understandable, his family was exterminated by vampires, and Klaus, killed his mom and his pack, he had to abandon his life, his friends, his love, his house, his life. But not anymore. I remember the song words when Tyler left the town for the first time: “You didn't ask for this/ Nobody ever would/ Caught in the middle of this dysfunction/ It's your sad reality/ It's your messed up family tree /And all your left with all these questions /Are you gonna be like your father was and his father was?/ Do you have to carry what they've handed down?/ No, this is not your legacy / This is not your destiny/ Yesterday does not define you/ No, this is not your legacy/ This is not your meant to be/ I can break the chains that bind you”. He didn’t ask to be dropped in the middle of all of this, his life before was a very easy life of a privilege kid born in the most powerful family in Mystic Falls, family with many secrets, wrongdoing and a past with many skeletons in the closet. He was vulnerable then and Caroline was too, that is what they had in common. But since then lots of things happened, Caroline changed too. Tyler fully embraced his werewolf head of the pack position, and instead of use this power to find peace and community, he is embracing the past of hatred and retaliation. So right now, Caroline and Tyler are on two polar opposite positions. While Damon is choosing his future destiny, building around himself a close tight circle of family and friends, Tyler choses his family legacy of destruction, he chooses his past. Will he ever understand that path isn’t going to bring him any thing good?

Lots of thing are brewing, don’t worry @Harry, the story is moving forward, piece by piece carefully because lots of bombshell will be dropped on us, that will also clarify so many things. Precisely, what is the connection between the travellers, Katherine, her new founded daughter Nadia, Silas, the anchor, the doppelgängers, Qetsiyah and Bonnie or what is the connection between Elena’s father, Dr Maxfield, Aaron, the death of the roommate, the secret society keeping an eye on Elena and Caroline and what is the Doctor experimenting on Jessy….oh I can’t wait for you to understand it all.

In the episode description, above the first link, Harry wrote: Sorry for the delays this week, had a funeral on Tuesday that took it out of me BUT we back on the grind!! Schedule out this afternoon for this week and next! That is what j-l is referring to.

When growing up I heard adults saying that when we die we don't take anything once we depart this world but today, I don't believe it because we do take our memories such as how we lived and loved. Harry, I am sorry for your loss. May you be blessed. Lyrics of “Family Tree by Mathew West; “You didn't ask for this/ Nobody ever would/ Caught in the middle of this dysfunction/ It's your sad reality/ It's your messed up family tree /And all your left with all these questions /Are you gonna be like your father was and his father was?/ Do you have to carry what they've handed down?/ No, this is not your legacy / This is not your destiny/ Yesterday does not define you/ No, this is not your legacy/ This is not your meant to be/ I can break the chains that bind you”. Those lyrics hit hard when I read them. As Patpet mentioned TVD's message is to get rid of the animosity of past generations to embrace our differences in harmony and love among each other. The Mystic Falls gang is the generation to change the previous beliefs but change doesn't come easy. It is an uphill battle with multiple setbacks and obstacles. It is with love, understanding, and trust that triumph will prevail and the new generation is following that path. Many fans' main focus is the romantic aspect of the show but the truth is that it covers serious topics such as parental neglect and abuse plus society's expectations of women and men which is a topic of much-heated debates among the fans. Another annoying saying among the can't is that TO is more mature than TVD and my answer to that is a resounding no. TVD characters started in high school but they didn't stay in school throughout the remainder of the series. TVD covers the journey from teenagers to the afterlife. We have seen the characters changing to adulthood and yes they started as teenagers but they were dealing with issues beyond their years so I don't understand why some fans have to minimize TVD to TO if the comparison has to be made TVD has won awards and is on the list of most watch show while TO did not. Every time I watch TVD I noticed something new which is not the case for TO. Now I am not saying that TO is bad because the truth is it is better than a lot of the shows out there but it doesn't require paying attention to the numerous layers and details within TVD.

Since the plan doesn't work, I guess is the reason I never thought about this before. But what if Damon's plan to swap Silas and Bonnie had worked? The other side would have been destroyed. Alaric, Rose, Lexi, all of them are over there right now. Literally just had this thought while watching this today

Also yes Tyler really pissed me off this season. I think that if they hadn't found out about Bonnie, he never even would've shown up to tell Caroline it was over, he would've just kept blowing her off. It is good he came back for his friend's funeral and was supportive of Caroline at the time, but he should not have had sex with her, "a couple dozen times" as he said, and let her go on about how she was so happy he was back and going to school and all of that for days before finally telling her he wasn't coming back. Tyler was honestly always one of my least favorite characters just from how he treated Vicki in season 1

I love the symmetry of Katherine feeding Jeremy to Silas, and then her being fed to Silas.
