There were some disappointed fans about it not being tied to either the Pah Wraiths from DS9 or the Collective itself from DS9. But I never once believed it would be. If you're wanting to link the crew and the show to something personal to them its got to be the Borg or Q, and that for TNG is really about it. Spoilers came out early from Burton who mentioned filming on the D briefly) personally thought once the season started it was going to be a flashback (as several of the episodes have had a flashback to them), But as the season went towards its conclusion, I just had to assume it was going to appear. It was absolutely magical. I am a huge life long Trek fan going back to watching TOS back when it first aired (though my memories of it are its early syndication days, but my family has photos of me as a tiny kid being absolutely glued to the tv). So this is, outside of the extended reintroduction of TOS Enterprise in the Motion Picture, one of the most beautiful scenes for hitting me hard in the feels. And nothing wrong with getting the "D"

The Bridge was fully a new build. There is one element of the set that is original. And thats the plaque. As I believe Michael Okuda managed to "walk" it off the set of Generations (ie take it without permission, before it would have been set to the shredder).

And let's be very clear a part of why this season is hitting is based on our emotional attachment to the characters. It's a huge cheat with drama versus having to introduce a full set of new characters. And to a lesser degree little touches like the heavy reuse of theme materials throughout the episodes. It's a cheat but it's an effective one. Things like using Michele Forbes for Ro. You give the same dialogue to a new character, it's not going to have the weight it does with an established character that we know the history of. Seven been in the Alpha Quadrant much longer then on Voyager, but when they are on the run and she turns to Tuvok, because we know that connection (versus any of the numerous that would have happened off screen) it hits. Those type of cheats are perfectly valid. But there is absolutely no question that they make the experience stronger for the viewer. And let's be very clear there is one reason and one reason alone why it took until season 3 and that was Patrick Stewart. When Stewart decided you know we should get the gang back together it was before the filming started of season 2 (in fact only three episodes had been fully written, a couple in development, and a basic plot of 2 completed). And it's the reason why the head writer of season 2 stepped aside after just three episodes of Picard season 2, so that he could focus fully on the next season, and have a continuous shoot to help offset some of the cost of the having the old gang back and the need for reconstructing a new bridge. Season 2 absolutely suffers in quality after the first three episodes (personally I think season 2 episodes 1 and 2 are stronger then the first 2 episodes of season 3).

One of my favorite character moments in this episode is Shaw. With the ship under attack from the Borg. This man is not going to be the one who gets to escape until everyone else in the group is in there. He is too damaged from his survivor guilt for that to be something that happens.
