Stefan tries to distract Elena from obsessing about the state of her relationship with Damon, while Bonnie does her best to be realistic about how the changes happening on the other side will affect her existence as the Anchor. Damon demands the Traveler knife, forcing Jeremy and Matt to admit it has gone missing. Through flashbacks to election night, 1960, Enzo reveals to Elena, Stefan and Bonnie that he has learned what happened to his long-lost love, Maggie, and then, with the unwilling help of Liv and Luke, things take an ugly turn. Trying to calm Enzo down, Damon intervenes, but his words cause Enzo to make a desperate and dangerous decision that leads to a violent confrontation with Stefan. Finally, Markos enlists Sloan's help in a ritual designed to break an ancient curse against the Travelers. Tyler is forced to play a dangerous part in the ritual, while witnessing the incredible power The Travelers now possess.

I feel sorry for Enzo, his eyes full of tears when Damon told him he killed his girl, was heart breaking and tells us a lot about Enzo. He is good person that has been a solider first and then a prisoner tortured for decades, he is as strong and resilient as anybody can get. I don’t believe he would have killed Stefan or Elena of all people, he spent 5 years in captivity with Damon, he probably knows his soul better than his own brother does and he knows how much those two people mean to Damon. He act tough because as a soldier he knows how to make a threat or to get people scared to get them to talk. He had his humanity off and he could have killed Elena, but he just twisted her head after she attacked him and left her there. Same thing with Stefan. By confronting Enzo directly Stefan put himself and Enzo in a impossible situation and still Enzo, humanity off Enzo, didn’t killed him, but took his revenge on Stefan trying to kill him, by pulling away and let him having to explain to Damon why he went after him to kill him. As usual Stefan thinks he knows best and he doesn’t. He should have let Damon handle the situation, he knows Enzo better than him, he would have know what to do. History repeating and Stefan hasn't learn his lesson. When Damon told him not to tell his father about Katherine, and he promises not to do it, but went and did the opposite. Stefan has this annoy habit to think he knows best and he never does and keeps repeating the same mistakes. I personally wouldn't compare the situation to the one when Elena killed Jessy because he was on Damon’s neck biting his way into his neck and would have taken his head off, so there was no choice there. Here Stefan deliberately went to look for Enzo, provoked him, a vampire with no humanity, alone, putting himself in a situation where the only outcome was kill or be killed. But Enzo even with his humanity off didn’t kill him, he made his threats, consider the situation, kill him...die together...and at the end chose to let Stefan live. So knowing what his poor judgement, once again, took him and remembering how he acted after Damon killed Lexi, he resolve to lie. Still, in Stefan's priority what peope think of him, take presidence, in this case his brother judgement of him, because of the previous case with Katherine when he took things in his own hands, cause a mess, but most of all cause Damon to think less of him, not to trust him anymore. He thinks people would do or think or act like he does, as when Elena was a newbie vampire and he assume she couldn’t handle certain situation because he couldn’t, but nor Elena or Damon are like him and he keeps underestimate Damon. So to avoid what happen the first time he didn’t listen to Damon, and avoid consequences, he choses to lie, involving Elena in this lying too. And it sound deja vous. The first time he brought Elena into his lying was when he promises Damon to help him to open the tomb and find Katherine and he had no intention of doing so, and brought Elena into this deception, forcing her to lie to Damon’s face in her kitchen, and she was Stefan’s girlfriend and it was wrong the first time because Elena isn’t a lair. This times, she Damon’s girlfriend and ask to someone to lie to their own partner is so incredibly wrong in so many ways. Also we know already, that keeping things from each other is never a good thing. Once again, another bad judgement from Stefan, and once again he assumed Damon would act like he did, and assuming Damon couldn’t handle the news of Enzo's death, undervaluing his brother, but Damon isn’t him. At least he recognised he has been a crappy brother to Damon so far, and surely during Damon’s account of his days with Enzo imprisoned, he realized he was way too quick to judge Enzo and the entire situation and shouldn’t get involved. And now we have a vengeful vampire ghost, on top of what is going on with the travellers and Tyler being kidnapped.

Lying to Damon is not a good idea. Damon will not stop looking for Enzo and finding out what happened. As Enzo said, Damon can be very persistent when he wants something. The brothers' conversation at the end of the episode is heartbreaking I don't think Stefan really understood how important Enzo is to Damon until now. What they've been through. How much Enzo helped Damon through the hell of Augustin. Stefan finally understands how much Damon hoped he would save him from that hell of pain and humiliation. That he is important enough for Stefan to miss him. Damon drops all walls for a moment and shows his brother his hurt and partially broken soul. How hurt he is because Stefan hasn't even noticed that his big brother has been gone for 5 years. Stefan has a lot to put right.

Not only he didn't look up for him in 5 years, but when he knew he was going around with his humanity off, didn't care to find out why, just label him as a "monster" as he said to Enzo's girl, and send Lexi to fix him because his behaviour was an inconvinienze. Now he is realising how Damon suffered and how much he resented him, for not missing him at all. Still when Damon had the opportunity to tell him he acted as a big brother and never burden his brother with how much he suffered and how hurted he was by Stefan's lack of care. Damon never play victim and Stefan was too much self involved to realise how much Damon needed him, missed him and loved him.

Yes, all that comes on top of it too. And to think that after Stefan drowned in the safe, he had nothing better to do than make Elena and Damon feel guilty by accusing them of not being the ones who saved him. In season 4 episode 14, the brothers have a conversation on the porch. Stefan says how wrong he was to make Elena turn off her humanity, and Damon replies: Humanity means nothing if you don't have anyone to care about, Stefan. In hindsight, I wonder if maybe Damon had included his situation in that when he flipped the switch. Stefan didn't care about him, didn't come to save him and he had to leave Enzo in the fire. Who was Damon left with.? He also had no one left to care about. Sometimes I just want to shake Stefan up. To stop him being so strict and self-righteous to his brother all the time.

Even after enduring the monstrous experiment by the Whitmore doctors, Enzo kept Damon from hating his brother and turning his humanity because Stefan didn't rescue him from imprisonment in hell. Meanwhile, Lexi helped Stefan with his ripper issue. She believed that Damon was a bad influence on Stefan. Enzo tried to keep the brothers together while Lexi kept them apart.

A comment from Newnoon: "Every time I see the scene with Damon and Stefan in the end, it makes me cry. There’s something about it that hits me right in the feels. Both Damon and Enzo had a privilege of turning off their humanity, to turn off the pain and all the suffering and become emotionally numb to all the tortures BUT they chose not to. When those humans involved in Augustine society were experimenting on the vampires in the most inhumane way possible, justifying their actions by believing what they were doing was good for mankind but in reality they were doing it only to satisfy their sadistic nature and that was just a lie they tell themselves to make themselves believe that vampires are monsters so they deserve what they were doing to them, all in all in those moments, those supposedly “monsters” were refusing to turn off their humanity to not give them the satisfaction of becoming the monster those doctors expected them to be but above all they were not turning it off for the people they love, people who have no idea about the Augustine hell. They were tolerating the pain for LOVE, those beautiful souls who were more human than those humans(the real monsters) could ever be. Damon has seen the worst side of humanity but Stefan hasn’t, that’s why Stefan looks at life in more like a black and white type of way, but Damon knows everything works on shades of grey. This is how Stefan sees himself, that he was innocent before he was turned but it was vampirism that turned him in to the monster, vampirism turned him in to a ripper, this is why he always associates humans with light, purity and angelic traits but vampires for him equals darkness, maliciousness , demons. He hates his vampire nature and he tries to pretend to be human as much as possible because he thinks humans are superior to vampires. But it’s different for Damon, he had already been exposed to dark side of humanity before he was turned. He had to go to war and be faced with absolute human’s cruelty, war is one of the obvious place that you can see the dark side of humanity in action, when you put in a position that you have to kill another human being, who you don’t know but you know that they’re just like you, having a family waiting for them but if you don’t kill them they will kill you, this is when Damon learned the hard truth of this rule to survive “kill or be killed”. And then after he was turned, he was captured by monstrous humans to be tortured for 5 years but after all of this, it was also a human like Elena who ever showed him the compassion the he never had in his entire life so it’s not about what creatures you are, whether you are a vampire or human or any other supernatural creature, it’s about who you are as person as we see with this Augustine story line, humans also have a potential to become absolute monsters. Who you are as a person could define whether you’re coming from love or coming from fear".
