Stefan knew about Elena erasing her memories. Back in episode 2 when she's talking to Matt and Jeremy about her plans and asking them to help keep her from learning the truth, she tells them "Tyler and Stefan are already on board."

Kitty Underwood

You also have your timeline a little mixed up. Damon was at Whitmore in the 50s, turned his humanity off when he left, and that's why Lexi came to New York in the 70s and tried to make him turn his humanity back on

Patpet

The rift between the two brothers it wasn’t because Damon was bad, it was because Stefan blamed Damon for everything that happen to him to avoid facing his problems and because Lexi and circumstances that created misunderstandings. In 1912 they met again for the first time after they became Vampires. In the beginning Stefan was going around killing founder’s family members like it was a pass time, and killing random ladies he lured into the house putting himself and Damon in danger of being exposed. Damon left because he was very hungry to his brother for turning him against his will, and for his reckless behaviour. So when they met again in 1912, Damon didn’t know Stefan had problem of controlling his urges with blood, nor did Stefan. Damon just learnt from Sage that feeding could be fan and sensual and wanted to share this with his brother and bond over it, and be brothers again. Little he knew that Stefan was a ripper, killed the lady they selected to feed on by beheading her and went off to be the ripper of Monterey. How that was Damon’s fault? But Stefan blamed Damon for that. Again 1940 they met again. The lady that Damon turned, Charlotte, that was sired to him, brought someone in the bar where Damon Stefan and Lexi were drinking and thinking to go to war together. She shaved on Stefan’s face that person with a bleeding neck, she took there as dinner. Again, how that is Damon fault? But Lexi told him he had no restrain, which isn’t true, and played on his insecurities to keep the two brothers apart, Damon left and let Stefan live his life his own way, and Stefan though Damon bailed on him, just left without telling him anything, Lexi didn’t tell him anything, so Stefan though Damon was unreliable. Again, Stefan blaming Damon for something he didn’t do. 1950 Damon is called back home from his other side of his family, Joseph, Zac’s grandfather, sold him to the Augustine to get all Damon’s property to his name and get rid of the two brothers for good. Stefan arrived late, that is why he wasn’t captured, but when he arrived at home Joseph was dead, because Damon manage to killed him just before collapsing for the vervain injected, before he was captured. Again, Stefan didn’t know what has happened and blamed Damon for it, judging him wrongly, again. Damon spent 5 years captured, been tortured, with the hope that Stefan would care to search for him, find him and save him. It didn’t happen, and to save himself he had to switch his humanity off. In 1970s Stefan learn his brother was going around with his humanity off and was off the rail, and instead of going and find him, sent Lexi, of all people, the one that kept the two brothers apart, to apply on Damon her draconian methods, of psychological torture, without caring to know why Damon had his humanity off, like he needed more torture. So he got rid of her. In 1990, when he finally manage to make his way home, he had his humanity still off, after almost 30 years alone. He finds Zac, the nephew of the person that sold him to be tortured happily living in his house, with a family situation, and Stefan blaming him for everything he didn’t do. Can you blame Damon for having resentments? Obviously, with his humanity off, he blamed that side of the family that was never happy to have him around in HIS house. So he did the awful thing, of punish Zac for that side of the family that could never stand him because of greediness, and to punish Stefan for never helping him, never search for him when he needed him the most, for sending Lexi, instead of coming himself, and for blaming him unjustifiably for everything that happen to him, because at that time, it was much easier for Stefan to blame Damon than to face his problems heads on. When Damon came back to Mystic Fall, (the pilot) 3 years before the present day, he still had his humanity off. Gradually Stefan got to know him again, and realise that his brother was not what he thought he was. Damon got to show him, the caring big brother he is, and how much he actually always cared for his brother. Stefan learned what actually happen in all those years and all those past events, and that his brother suffered quite a lot. They cleared all their misunderstandings and Stefan understood that what he thought about Damon was wrong and realise how much his brother means to him, how much he learn to rely on him and that it felt good to love and be loved that deeply. That is why there is a huge difference in attitude in Stefan than and now, not because Damon was bad then and now is good, everybody did pretty horrible things especially with their humanity off, and they had to carry the guilt of what they have done when their humanity is back on again, but because of a mixture of resentments, misunderstandings, lack of communication, and for using Damon as an escape goat for everything, because that is how they were raised to be, Damon the disappointment, the black sheep and Stefan the golden boy, the apple of Daddy's eyes. Bonnie understands Damon. Humanity off and tons of resentment is a very bad combo. She gets it now, compare to how judgemental she was long ago, and she doesn't blame him, he blames himself enough, that is why Damon though at the beginning he didn't deserved to be loved.

Oh SHIT thank you for this rundown!! Ima read it properly before next episode so it goes into my head cause I always struggle with the timeline of this show

Patpet

No worries it happens to all the first timers, there so many details to remember, that is almost impossible to put all the pieces together. It took us many time watching it and many discussions to reach this level of understanding of how all the pieces are connected.

Tina

Patpet, You wrote this so fantastically and got to the point. I love it.

Tina

In this episode I am extremely noticed how differently the manipulated Elena behaves. Elena was always compassionate and forgiving towards others. The manipulated Elena is a completely different person whom I almost don't recognise. I was totally shocked when she says to Stefan that his dead brother doesn't deserve grief. The "real" Elena would never have said that. Even if she hated Damon, she would always understand that Stefan is grieving for his brother. I think it's terrible to see this "new" Elena. How much Elena's words must have hurt Stefan. I'm glad Stefan let it out and told Elena that she loved Damon. So much so that she couldn't bear his death and had him erased from her memory. Stefan, who is also so completely different. Who can't cope without his brother. Stefan who grieves so much that he can't feel anything anymore. Stefan and Elena, they are both lost without Damon. And then Bonnie and Damon. What a wonderful friendship. Bonnie who hated Damon for so long and now doesn't condemn him but gives him hope for forgiveness. Damon, who threatens Kai because he harasses Bonnie. I love this development.

1994 was the last time the Salvatore brothers saw each other on bad terms until they saw each other in the pilot. Kai was not the first time we saw a psychopath on the show. The first was the doctor who tortured Damon and Enzo in the ‘50 and the second was Doctor Wes at Whitmore College. The first two psychopaths are high functioning and organized, while Kai is violent and unpredictably scary.

HeatherB

Yep. Kai is a total nutjob. No empathy, no giving a shit about anyone. I like the character this time around. First watch I found him extremely irritating and thought 'oh please someone kill him off'. I love that Damon stands up for Bonnie and vice versa. They like and respect one another now and there's no way either would let someone hurt the other.

Kitty Underwood

I guess I didn't consider those two as psychopaths, and Harry either, because they had a purpose or goal behind what they were doing. At least in the 50s, it was set up to be a way to help people, though it seemed really it was just to help the rich/elite, since they were having parties and bringing them out as entertainment. Wes didn't really seem to care about helping people, unless you consider making vampires eat each other instead of humans as helping people. But yeah, neither of them were actually good people

Maribel Humble

There are different types of psychopaths. Not all of them act like Kai. Psychopathic behavior ranges from one individual to another. Some are sex offenders and murderers, while others may be successful leaders. It all depends on their traits. It’s also essential to distinguish between a psychopath and someone with psychopathic traits. Psychopathic traits commonly include: Antisocial behavior Superficial charm Impulsivity Callous, unemotional traits Lack of guilt Lack of empathy The Doctor who tortured Damon and Enzo in the 50s and Dr. Wes are part of the atypical group known as high-functioning psychopaths. They do not possess violent tendencies and are, in many cases, highly successful contributing members of society. They may still retain the tell-tale characteristics of a psychopath: callousness, lack of empathy, grandiosity, etc., but they do not engage in the aggressive behavior that one may see associated with a violent psychopath.
