That last scene I've watch it and rewatch it so many times, it's one of my favourite of the entire show. You said it perfectly, the writers create all those characters and they are so deep, complex and so detailed, that took a life on their own, became alive at the point that, even we as a viewers, recognise what is typical and characteristic of their personality as if they were real people and we knew them. In that scene there all the essence of Stefan and Damon. Damon that when the emotions are overwealming he hides behind humour, use humour as a sheald as a band aid, I recognise it so well because my dad used to do preciselly the same thing. Stefan just gave up and finally drop the pretenses, and when he sees Damon let his feelings to surfice like an ocean of relief, abandoning himself like a kid into his big brother arms, letting imself be utterly vulnerable, for the very first time in long time. At that point Damon let go too and embracing is little brother show in his big puppy eyes the full extent of his emotions, an how much he loves is kid brother, reassuring him tenderly that he is realy there he is really back. So beautifully done, so incredibly touching. To me TVD is writers goal.

Not sure if you remember the dialogue in the season 5 finale, when Damon and Bonnie were waiting for the other side to fade away. Bonnie had said to Damon "I'm sure there's a million other people you'd rather be here with, but" and holds his hand. He looks at her and says "couple thousand at most". So they were calling back to that line, only now it's not even a couple thousand they'd rather be with, they are happy being together

Stefan's eyes are full of wonder and uncertainty when he sees Damon. When Stefan’s hand was trembling and about to touch Damon, I cried. The way the brothers embrace each other is beautiful and heartwarming. No matter how many times I watch this scene it never gets old. I want to thank Patpet, Newmoon, and Martina Feldman for opening my eyes to the fact that the main story of TVD is about the brothers. You guys help me escape from the platitude of a good brother vs. a bad brother. Now, I am enjoying the TVD more than before once I put away all those stereotypes that circulate among the fandom.

I love this scene so much. I am thoroughly enjoying reading your comments on all of the patreon sites that we both seem to support. I was looking for a way to get in touch with you but apparently you tube has no way to do that. I posted responses on Ep 12 of season 1 on Liam's site - please read if you get a chance.
