I’ve not even played DnD before but the idea of designing a character for it sounds so fun to me.

Oh trust me, it’s not only that, it’s also designing the world around them. Well, that is if you are the dungeon master, and not the player. As the player, you create your character that influences the world that the DM built, and choose your own way of exploring it in the way your character would. It’s one of the highlights of my life where I can sit down and just create a backstory for a character, tragic or not, and have them explore new purposes and have unexpected events turn everything they knew up side down. Then you change both in character, and you change the world. Best part is, you can do all of this, with friends and their characters, which makes story building so much better.
