Katelyn

Sure, he knew the horrors the Fire Narion had committed (Song), but he still wouldn’t have denounced his nation. He wouldn’t have admitted at that point that Ozai would never love or accept him and preferred him dead. One truth that has been at the center of his world ever since his banishment that he had a home to return to and there was a place for him within it, that if he just didn’t screw up for once, everything would be okay again. If Zuko sided with Aang, he would have been a shoddy ally. He would still have had that tie pulling him back to Ozai, that residual hope that everything could still go back to normal. There would have been a part of Zuko that questioned and regretted his decision that he made under duress. There would always be that What If. When he’s first attacking Aang, he’s not calm with his teeth clenched. YouTube version: I’m going to talk about Katara’s odd choice with the spirit water on Zuko and Azula plus a little Iroh and Aang too as well.

Being locked in prison with a guy who's been stalking and attacking you for months is the opposite of romantic my guy.

I can see where you're coming from, I'm trying to understand this pov, I agree with many stuff you said!!

Katelyn

I get it. I rewatch the series. Many times. Hopefully you will understand.

Libby DVR

Too bad. Are you the writer? I don't think rape culture is remotely okay.

Libby DVR

There's long argument between shippers. I am not a shipper at all. I analyze content and theme instead of obsessing over imaginary characters having imaginary relationships. But Katara and Zuko would be rape culture. The only reason people even see it in the show is because the Beauty and The Beast rape culture theme has been so thoroughly implanted in people's minds they can't help but see it. It's not Katara's job to heal a broken man and abusers don't become love partners.

Madvision

Omg you went too deep about this, I just meant that how they look appearance wise, I can see them being together, NOT THEIR CHARACTERS, of course I don't support rape culture whatever that is 😭😭

Libby DVR

Rape culture is this way in media how they do write relationships like this. I am not accusing. I am explaining how rape culture has impacted how you see this scene. If you think how a woman who'd been pursued all over the world and repeatedly attacked would actually feel being locked up with that man it's horrifying and yet people always see this scene as romantic. It's all the time in media. A woman is angry and suddenly they're kissing. Beauty and the beast is rape culture. It's a constant message from media that if a woman says, "I don't like you and I don't trust you, she actually means take me now. If a man is angry and abusive he actually means, "I love you' or 'I need you to love me until I'm nice'. That is rape culture and it's very harmful in society. It causes a lot of confusion in boys and girls. I am a writer and I'm very careful not to promote it in my own stories at all.

Madvision

I TOTALLY AGREE!! it's sometimes scary when you don't notice that you like that situation because you're taught to like it since you were a child when it's wrong! I've never seen beauty and the beast so... Lol

Libby DVR

Beauty and the beast theme is a trope and every where. You don't have to have seen that movie to have seen it. I like thinking deeper about those things and appreciate when people listen and consider. Thank you for doing that :)

Madvision

Of course, I'm glad to hear you're a writer that's amazing! I want to get in the film industry, I've always wanted to direct a movie or something

I know this is an old post but I just had to comment. As a feminist literary scholar, I think it's my duty to comment on the Zutara rape culture discussion. This seems to be a common argument for Kataang shippers even though it's completely invalid. I try not to spoil anything, but Zuko and Katara are two people with similar backgrounds and similar trauma, two people that boost each other's character development, two different people that are truly capable of understanding each other. Katara never opened up to Aang like she opened up to characters like Haru and Zuko. It was Aang who constantly harassed Katara even though she never gave him her consent. It would be toxic and rapey if Katara ended up with someone like Jet or Azula. Zuko never harmed her physically, he probably would never have even thought about chasing Katara if she hadn't been the Avatar's protector and mother figure. Accusing Zuko of being part of rape culture is just plain bullying. Say what you will about Zuko (he can be angry, hot-headed and unstable), but he is not inherently violent and he does not display toxic masculinity. He acts very submissive with Mai, he had Azula for a sister and he always seemed to respect women. So stop blaming the abuse victim.

You can comment whenever you want don't worry, also I totally agree with you, I can also see why this whole mindset started so yeah
