Katelyn

Azula’s apology to Ty Lee doesn’t strike me the same way as her scene with Zuko in their old beach house. There doesn’t seem to be much of a reason for Azula to search out Zuko alone and bring him down to the beach. She is recognizing that Zuko is in pain and needs to be around other people and she reflects on their shared history. Ty Lee has to be violent to make guys get away from her, while Azula just has to be herself to make people get away from her. The whole mother thought I was a monster was either Azula’s mistaken belief that she herself thought of or something Ozai would say in order to isolate Azula from Ursa. Since Azula took in everything Ozai said when she was little, she probably believed it with no questions asked. I believe that Ursa loves her, and not she thought of her as a monster. Azula is not the most reliable source to anything she says. I’m not going to take it on face value. Zuko’s jealousy is not based on anything real. Mai understands his past as an explanation, but not an excuse. Zuko may have taking his anger out in unhealthy ways, but now that the root of his pain is divulged, Mai forgives him for his jealous behavior. Mai continues to hold her emotions close to her chest and uses dryness as a defense mechanism. Her emotions is so important to her that she has to protect them at all costs, much like an armor protects the most vulnerable parts of the body. I love Ty Lee’s I know you. Ty Lee didn’t know Zuko during his banishment. She never saw Zuko in his bald ponytail phase, yelling and stomping things. When she sees him again, to us, he’s calmed down quite a bit, but to Ty Lee, the change is drastic. To anyone who only knew him before thirteen, they’d be quite horrified to encounter his face. Ty Lee’s cognitive dissonance between this Zuko and the one she knew was enough to break her bubbly facade, for even a moment.

Mai is such a likeable character it's so sad she has that defense mechanism but at least it makes her honest I guess idk
