the southern raiders is SUUUUUUCH a powerful episode, and the perfect way to wrap up Katara's arc. i'm so glad the writers decided to give Katara closure with her mom's death. i also love that Katara always refers to Yon Rha as "the monster" because it shows that she hasn't moved on from her trauma yet at all. it makes perfect sense because she was like 6 or 7 when it happened and at that age monsters are still real, so i love that the writers continuously had her conceptualize her mother's killer that way. i also can't imagine the survivor's guilt she must feel, now that she knows that her mother sacrificed herself to protect her. AND the fact that she and Hakoda had to walk into their home to see Kya likely charred to death. i can't imagine how traumatizing that would be for anyone, let alone a child so young. what Katara said to Sokka at the beginning, "then you didn't love her the way i did" obviously was waaaay out of line, but it makes so much sense because they experienced Kya's death in such drastically different ways. this episode just blows me away every single time!
