Behind the scenes - Sketch to Finish (Patreon)

With this, I wanted to share with you all my whole drawing process of two panels from start to finish along with some tips! 😁

Step 1: Story Board

- I draw a very rough (and very ugly 😂) sketch of the panels, only to get an idea of what’s happening. This step is called “story board” and it‘s how I “write” and plan out all the story. Story boards should be easy and fast to make without many details but with all the necessary information to continue the story.

Step 2: References

- In this step, I simply go to Pinterest and find as many relative pictures and drawings I can find that fit the mood and can help me out.

Step 3: Sketch

- I sketch the panels. This sketch is far more detailed and precise than the first very rough one. This will be my guide in the following step, of inking the drawings.

Step 4: Inking

- Maybe the most time consuming and strenuous step of the procedure is the inking. I ink with a black pen (technical pen in Procreate) and then change the inking color according to the flat colors of every aspect of the drawing. (For example, I change the color of the inking of Onyx’s hair to an orange one since he’s blonde and Keane’s to a dark brown since he’s brunette)

Step 5: Flat Colors

- In this step I paint the drawings with the according flat colors. I also like to use some reddish airbrush on their skin as blush.

Step 6: Background + Shadows

- Here I add the backgrounds in each panel as well as the shadows according to the light source of the environment.

The backgrounds can be either drawn by hand or can be extracted from many available 3D background applications / software like Sketch up, Blender, Clip Studio Paint etc.!

Step 7: Lights / Final touches

- Pretty self explanatory; here I add the lightings on the characters’ hair, lips etc. as well as the light source in the background images.

Step 8: Final Product!

- In the last step, I cut the panels and place them as I see fit in the final format of the Webtoon. I add the dialogues, speech bubbles, final effects, sounds and I’m done!

After following the same steps for all the panels and everything is in place, the episode is done and ready to be published~! *Happy times* 😂
