Paragraph 40 "Thomas gives it up as a last cause" -> lost cause Good to see him start his xp farming, cathartic when he snapped back at Camilla, and really glad he went back and finished the diary

anony

So the original Thomas actually was a scoundrel?

Cambrian

Yeah he wasn't a good guy. Its just a question of whether he was such a bad guy that he poisoned his brother.

Sith2go

His grindset is alpha... Perhaps even sigma.

IsekaiMeInTVD

❤️Thank you for this sublime moment.❤️

Hmm, I find the idea interesting, and your writing is enjoyable but I'm getting a feeling I'm not going to like certain parts of the execution as time goes on. New Thomas seems really identical to Marcus(?) the half orc from your other story. And I thought Marcus was pretty lame and a missed opportunity. Through admittedly I prefer in these stories when the original asshole persona has more impact on who the Mc instead of a full erasure. And just like spicier protagonists in general.

Juan

I think there might be a problem with making the protagonist a fat, lazy lay about in the previous life. A person like that working themselves so hard doesn't seem that believable to me. Afterall, if they have that kind of drive to improve, why didn't they use it in there modern life?

Juan

Been thinking about it for a few hours, and kudos to your writing for catching my attention like this, I think the source of my problems in regards to this story be summed up as such. Your story requires a protagonist that is both extraordinary and a bit of a crazy fucker instead of the general nice average guy feeling I get from so far. And I get the feeling as time goes on this discrepancy is only going to become more apparent. For example, Thomas had a life before being transferred. A life he might never see again as far as he's aware. This is not addressed properly. Not in an apathetic I don't give a fuck way or in an excellent composure and ability to adapt to way, or if you want to make him more normal- a show of panic and sorrow at what he lost. I mentioned in another comment how it felt off how little concerned Thomas showed about the fact that whatever process brought Thomas here, effectively killed the old Thomas and he has to steal his identity to survive. Not a callous disregard for another person's life nor a great ability to compartmentalize- to focus on the problems he can solve and not worry about the ones he can't. Finally another comment I brought up I had found it weird how willing he was to exercise. Because of course, exercising and having the self control to keep yourself healthy when you have an abundance of easy feel good options in front of you can be hard. Something he either failed to do in the previous life, or had no desire to do. But now he seemingly has no problems doing so with very little prodding (which should be very big prodding, but again it doesn't seem he actually feels the weight it would place on a normal person to be transported like this so small prodding). In short, and this is a problem that I'm pretty sure is what caused me to drop the half orc story (Breaking Providence?) the protagonist beyond me just thinking there bland, actively don't fit the story or world there in. Anyway I hope my mini essay came of as proper criticism.

It's about different starting points. Going into a change from fat to fit is more mentally challenging that from neutral to fit. Fat people don't lack the drive to it. They more often give up earlier due to seeing how hard it is and being aware of the lasting marks on their bodies that come from all the stretched skin and so. It's like starting from a losing position vs a normal one. There are still some people who push through. But, anyway, I can say from experience that many overweight people would go hard on keeping themselves fit if they could revert back to the semi-blank plate.

Juan

Also don't know if old Thomas can be a loser in the way he is portrayed to be. Now its going to depend on how exactly his gift of leadership worked, if he really did have it, but if the idea that it would be powerful enough that even a person like Thomas could lead it properly has any merit. And if it doesn't then it there would need to be an explanation for why the family has no problem messing up a town be putting Thomas in charge, then shouldn't Thomas have more to offer a gang than just his money? Not necessarily enough that he would be worth keeping around without it, but it seems like he should have something going for him.

Jacob Steele

Not sure why he’s so obsessed on getting ordered around, doesn’t exactly take forcing the uncomfortable girl to order him to just, walk around town and see what people might be able to use some help with. But Tyftc 😃

I finally had the time to sit down and read through all five chapters you've posted of this story so far so I figured I'd give my thoughts (Warning, great wall of text ahead, but you DID say you wanted feedback lol). First off, as a general rule of thumb, I DESPISE Isekai's. I find them to be incredibly boring and lazy storytelling, with the only benefit of them being that you get to discover the world at the same time as the protagonist does. In almost every case, there's no Isekai story that wouldn't immediately be better if it instead had a protagonist native to the setting and world. In my opinion, there's no benefit in blending together the real modern world with a fantasy one, as it only waters down the story and frankly has a similar problem to the concept of the multiverse, where the moment you introduce multiple realities, everything immediately has less meaning. Isekai's are the same in a way, because it raises a lot of questions about how 'real' it is, and simply through the act of 'being', it always leaves the existence of that modern world perpetually hanging over the new one. It doesn't help that a grand majority of Isekai's have the protagonist as a hero destined to save the world, which is boring enough already as a storyline without even accounting for the fact that it already tells you how the story ends. Because of all this, you can therefore imagine my surprise when I actually found myself enjoying reading this story, mostly because of how it subverts all those expectations (in a good way, not the dumbass Game of Thrones 'Dumb and Dumber' way). Because it's not about some modern chump being thrown into a fantasy world and learning to become a hero. Instead he's taking over the body of someone else who was essentially a scumbag, which already gives a lot of room to grow and turn things on its head, because that immediately creates a case where the story wouldn't just become better if the protagonist were native to the world, because he's taken over a pre-defined person who WAS native to that world and as we can plainly see, would not have made for a compelling protagonist whatsoever. Likewise, the modern world is no longer as great a shadow cast over the new fantasy world because from what little we've gleaned about Thomas, he has nothing to go back to (besides modern amenities), and so that voice in the back of your head thinking things like "What about his family? His friends? Does he not miss anyone? His old life? Why doesn't he ever think about wanting to go back?" gets a lot quieter. I still think there should be more discordance/dissonance between the two, because I don't care who you are, if you get displaced to another fucking world, you're going to be a lot more dazed (especially if you're taking over somebody else's body), and so far Thomas hasn't given much in the way of awe or panic or anything which I think is very important if you're going to do an Isekai. Maybe he's just really great at compartmentalizing, but I still think there needs to be more there to make his character feel more real and three-dimensional. Probably my favorite part about the story however, is that by taking over the role of a lowlife asshole, there's nowhere to go but up. There's only room for improvement, for 'relentless potential', and seeing people's surprise to this change is always fun. That, and how the protagonist essentially goes from a side character in the world to a main character, but one who's semi-content in not constantly asserting his power (social, political, or magical) at every turn, at least in the beginning. It makes the surprise factor of people seeing how he's changing and developing much more satisfying. It actually reminds me a lot of your Skyrim story way-back-when 'Deception, Domination, and Dragons', which was another Isekai story that I enjoyed, also much to my surprise. And that's again mainly due to how you tackle the protagonist and subvert expectations where instead of the protagonist becoming the Dragonborn, he's instead (seemingly in the beginning at least) a side character to her story which he goes out of his way to make himself a greater part of, intertwining the two, and then growing in importance (and power) along the way. Lastly, the setting and idea of 'Last Hope' is interesting and I'm curious to see how the town (and the characters) develop and how the name takes on different meanings. Because right now it's essentially Thomas' last hope, but I can see it becoming the last hope of a great deal of people as it expands, grows, and perhaps becomes a safe haven. The nobility element also makes the broader world interesting and how that might come into play, and I'm looking forward to see if perhaps 'Last Hope' eventually becomes a seat of power in its own right that eclipses the capital he hailed from, or at the very least goes from a shithole to a place of great promise. Anyway, I've ranted enough. I have actual things I should be doing right now but I wanted to write out my thoughts on this while they were still fresh. Looking forward to the next chapter.

Honestly I was partially expecting a breakdown/panic attack once he got to a bedroom and wasn't running off of fight or flight

To counterbalance the comments pointing out skepticism for Thomas deciding to start exercising as part of his "new" life, I think that's it's PLAUSIBLE for this kind of mindset to happen if such a drastic change happened to a person who was previously lazy or unmotivated to exercise in their prior life. I know I'd certainly make efforts to get into shape if I went from my current self (who is admittedly overweight and doesn't try to exercise because the pain doesn't outstrip the gains) to someone who was 50-100lbs lighter. Doesn't help that my last two bikes have been stolen... So yeah...I'm liking Thomas so far, though I will agree with feedback that a bit more observed dissonance in our MC over his old life being gone or having to adapt to pre-Industrial Revolution levels of tech would be nice.

This guy is pretty swell. I like his attitude.
