No, yeah, I recall you said the uploading schedule for reactions would be a touch shaky. No problem. Take your time. No rush. We open this show with a fun opener. You mention how they brought the drama early on. They did, didn’t they? You and me both on hoping and praying for Hondo. Sucks for the captain, though it’s hilarious how resigned he was to the mutiny. The tonal shift is fitting given the Goonies of it all. The At Attin aspects: This whole first episode gave me EXTREME childhood flashbacks. Makes sense as this At Attin feels like the John Hughes planet of Star Wars, thus it would be the central Illinois planet of Star Wars. It’s like watching Home Alone/The Breakfast Club etc. Or The Blues Brothers, though that one’s not John Hughes, but it basically is the national state film of Illinois. You question why you’re skeptical about the planet, well, you did see Fallout earlier this year, plus like you said, you’re that jaded with shit. If I’m being honest, nothing really seemed all that strange. Like I said, this is just like my hometown, hence nothing seemed too unusual. Save for this barrier business. That’s a red flag. I’m so pumped that Kerry Condon is in this. Was hoping that she was going to be Mara Jade, as that was a rumor that circulated. She’s not, or she doesn’t seem to be playing Mara Jade, but I’m here for Kerry as Fara. The core quartet is great. All the actors are unknown, save for the little lady who plays Fern, I’ve seen her before. Going by the Goonies analogies, Wim is definitely Mikey. Neel is so clearly Chunk. Fern feels like Stef. And KB is very Data. Ke Huy Quan Data, not Brent Spiner Data. Most are saying Neel is the favorite thus far. I like KB the best thus far. Her side bob is impressive, yes. And I knew that you would live for her Geordi look. Now to the big talking point of the episode: The holographic Ringling brothers thing straight from the Christmas Special. Love how you recognized it, and you prove that you have more of a social life than I. By that I mean that you although you caught it, you still had question about the reference. Me, there was no such question. I saw it, instantly recognized it, and I went, “What in the damn hell?! ...Disney, did you, you guys dropped a Star Wars Christmas Special reference in this!? ...Shit, that is amazing.” Naturally the internet’s all over it. Like I said, I’m more amazed by the Easter egg than anything. That said, if they wheel out the fucking VR porn machine that Art Carney got for Grandpa Wookiee, I’m out of here. The two kids waiting outside the principal’s office. I quipped, “What are you in for?” a second before the show did, and I got a good laugh. I figured you’d like the dad. I like how they don’t have the dismissive parent trope in that although he understandably doesn’t buy Wim’s excuse earlier, when Wim is missing, he goes straight to the location Wim mentioned. I got sidetracked when Fern mentioned her grandpa, more so because Kerry is playing her mom, so it made me note, “Your grandpa: older gentleman? Bald? About my height? Name of Mike?” I SO LOVED how you called how the shortcut would lead to the more overt Goonies fuckery. And as you saw, there was the fated button, and yes, subsequently, they are fucked. I’m such a troll, yelling to Wim, “PUSH THE BUTTON, MAX!!” He did, and we’re off on the adventure, which already is a delight and a half, both seeing it, and now sharing it with you, Jess. I await the further fun to come with great interest. Thanks for the fun reaction.

I really don’t get why people are so surprised at the Holiday Special being referenced. We got a mention of Life Day all the way back in the first Mandalorian episode, and I’ve kind of been holding my breath for this ever since.

I assume people are less shocked and more taken aback by the overtness of the reference. The mention of Life Day in The Mandalorian is subtle enough that people who don’t know, and even people who do, wouldn’t think much of it. Same with Mando’s disintegration gun, though hilariously, when they brought that up to George Lucas, he vehemently tried to deny the special’s existence. This one is more overt a deep cut, as they say. And like I said, I was more amused than anything else.

Huh, kind of a weird idea, but I’ll take more Owen and Beru any way I can…oh, not that kind of skeleton crew. Ever since the core idea of this show was revealed, I’ve been thinking it had no possible middle ground and would either be amazing or insufferable. And luckily, I was completely into it from minute one. Which is a lovely beat for beat shout out to the very first Star Wars scene, and already sets up a neat unpredictable mystery of its own. I totally buy that the New Republic would think it was “cheating” to equip its ships with anything more than a statement of their protection (“Yes, the pirates hit me again. Why do you think I’m calling, just to say hello? Of course I like talking to you! Of course I like saying hello!”), but at the same time, someone clearly played these pirates good, with that single credit being a very deliberate “Fuck you.” And now let’s leave them behind for the rest of the episode and head to the most terrifying planet yet seen in the franchise. And I’m only partly joking there, because the background unease of this place is off the charts, reminiscent of our first look at Ba Sing Se with Joo Dee. For all we can tell there’s only two adults on the planet, with droids filling in everywhere you’d expect to see them, and there’s clearly something wrong with these kids all eagerly wanting to take soul-crushing desk jobs they’ll be stuck in for life. It’s no wonder our heroes decide to try defying gravity in the Thunder Road. It’s always a gamble getting a group of child actors who have to work well both on their own and with each other, and these four all nail it. It’s especially fun how much they let the two boys be massive Star Wars dorks; even for people like me who grew up in those 15 years where it looked like the OT was the only Star Wars there would ever be, you either knew these kids or you were one (though my brother and I put quite a bit of Monty Python’s Black Knight in there too). It’s quite a relief to see Ryan Keira Armstrong after I spent the last couple years worried that Firestarter had killed her career in the crib. As for KB, I feel like I don’t have much to grab onto yet, but I certainly have faith at this point that she’ll make her reason for being here clear. Though it doesn’t help that I can’t stop picturing Abe Weissman telling her “You’ll never be Geordi.” And I have to point out, as nice as it is that stories like this have become way more gender-inclusive than they used to be, sometimes they overcorrect and make the girls completely mature and always having the right answer, and so far this isn’t doing that, as they have their own immaturity in a different way so all four are believable kids without being annoying about it. I am 100% on board for this ride, and you being here with us for your first new Star Wars with nothing to worry you’re missing makes it all the better.

Yeah, I’ve seen a few jokes about Owen and Beru. Good stuff. See what you mean of the lack of middle ground with this, but thankfully, this is a blast. Loved the A New Hope homage. Someone played those pirates something fierce. They could call the New Republic to write a very strongly worded letter to let them know how upset they are. (“I’m sorry too, Dmitri. I’m very sorry. All right, you’re sorrier than I am. But I am sorry as well. I am as sorry as you are, Dmitri. Don’t say that you’re the more sorry than I am because I am capable of being just as sorry as you are. So, we’re both sorry, all right? All right.”) See, I was laughing at how much the planet looks like my hometown, that barrier aside, I wasn’t creeped out. That, and I haven’t seen that Avatar, so that reference goes over my head. The desire to defy gravity is an understandable one, especially with a good Springsteen song. Kid actors are always a gamble. Here, the core quartet is marvelous. Oh, my brother and I were those dorks. Another part of this that gave me EXTREME childhood flashbacks. That’s fun to hear you and your brother had a bit of the Black Knight in there too. Ryan Keira Armstrong impressed me a lot in what was probably the WORST season of American Horror Story. Or, well, the half of the season that she was in was good. The ending was rushed and unsatisfactory, though a pass is given due to covid. She was a highlight. The second half of that season was some of the worst shit in that show, probably of television. So, similar thing of that the poor reception of stuff that she’s been in hasn’t been an impediment. KB feels the most like me in that she’s less concerned of the boys versus girls thing, and just wants to fix the mess, so they can get home. As for the Abe thing, I’d imagine he’d be demanding several wipes from Natalie and/or Sharona upon seeing the state of the ship. Good notes on the equal balance of immaturity without being annoying about it. They’re all believable, frustrating, yet still likeable kids, and it’s great. Definitely on board with sharing this with Jess, you, and anyone else along for the ride.
