"When did they last show something worth watching, eh? When did we last see a decent execution.", Arak, "Vengeance on Varos" Yes it is a dark story about people watching torture and executions on TV - while they're showing me torture and executions and violence on TV for my personal entertainment. This story is full of known actors. Owen Teale plays Maldak, the guard with the anti-hallucination helmet as you recognised was in "Game of Thrones". In terms of the Whoniverse, he was horrific in Torchwood's "Countrycide" playing the leader of the villagers - "'Cause it made me happy." We've seen Stephen Yardley, the actor who played Arak, one of the TV viewers, before. He was Sarah Jane's mutant friend in "Genesis of the Daleks". "I like that one, the one in the funny clothes.", Etta, "Vengeance on Varos" And Etta, the other TV viewer, is played by Sheila Reid. She was in New Who - she played Clara's grandmother when Clara invited Matt's Doctor to Christmas dinner (and he arrived naked). She was also in "Brazil" playing Mrs Buttle. "Is he sane, this Doctor?", "Sometimes.", Jondar and Peri, "Vengeance on Varos" Jondar, the one we initially see being tortured, is played by Jason Connery - yes, the son of Sean Connery. He is better known on TV for his role in the '80's "Robin of Sherwood" series - that's a good series as well. And we first saw Martin Jarvis in that memorably blurry story: "The Web Planet". He was also in "Invasion of the Dinosaurs" but you were probably distracted by the exciting dinosaurs and the Mike Yates plot twist. Sil, the representative of the mining corporation, is played by Nabil Shaban. Fun fact: in 2005 he was nominated for the "Best Male Performance in Scottish Theatre" - he lost to someone called David Tennant. "Keep quiet! We're recording. The moment approaches. Close up on death throes, please.", Governor, "Vengeance on Varos" Colin Baker has said that this was his favourite cliffhanger. And in "The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot", "Colin Baker" locks his family in the house to force them to watch the DVD of this story - on TV!

I absolutely love it when someone spells "throes" correctly! Rare, these days...

Sil is really an ingenious costume, made specially to fit disabled actor Nabil Shaban who has suffered with brittle bone disease all his life. He created Sil's gurgling laugh himself as part of his commitment to the part. One studio recording session overran so badly that there wasn't time to fully remove his makeup, so he had to drive home as part-Sil. In his eagerness to get home he was pulled over for driving too fast and his appearance shocked the police officer. Those 'marsh minnows' Sil enjoys so much actually gave Shaban terrible gastric problems.
