Part 2 of Varos was broadcast in the UK 50 years ago on 26th January 1985. This season concluded on 30th March 1985 just missing your birthday I'm afraid. Not long after Varos the BBC announced that the following scheduled season of Doctor Who was to be postponed, there followed a huge outcry and the BBC announced the series would return - it did 18 months later.

Hi Jess, I heard your question at the end and I have an answer (he said trying not to spoil anything). Since Peter Davison’s first season they’ve all been broadcast at the start of whichever year, January onwards etc. We’re currently on Season 22, broadcast in early 1985, however next year they change the broadcast time for the end of the year. Thus Season 23; late 1986, Season 24; late 1987 and so by the time of Season 25, those stories were broadcast when you were alive. As I said there are spoilers for the specific story Season 25 starts with so I won’t reveal that for you. I hope anyone who might reply when this is uploaded to YouTube is as spoiler free. I don’t know what they might say about that future story but that’s the best way I can phrase the answer to your question. Thank you again for this reaction, I think you’ve even made me appreciate it more with your take on events. Hopefully this can find a spot in your top five, I’d like to think so. All the very best, Chris in the UK

Martin Jarvis, the legendary narrator, came back to WHO for his 3rd and final appearance ('The Web Planet' & 'Invasion of the Dinosaurs'). But would appear in a few audio stories later on...

Faction Paradox

Sil is a truly revolting & repugnant character, brought to life perfectly by Nabil Shaban

Thank you for an amazing reaction. I felt your afterthoughts were so good I just cannot add anything! It is for sure one of the gems of this era. In terms of your questions, this season was broadcast in Early 1985, barring Colin Bakers 1st story which was 1984. As for whether a story was airing when you were born? No, because on checking the dates, you were born slap bang in between 2 seasons lol!. The nearest story to air after you were born would have aired when you were just 5 months old. I worked this out for my own birth date in terms of what was the first one I could have technically 'watched' & weirdly there is a common element (other than it being Dr Who lol!), but that's all I'm prepared to give away! I'll say more when the time comes around. See you next time!

Not mentioning any titles, but the first Doctor Who episode broadcast in your lifetime was the first episode of Season 25 on 5th October 1988, although The Timelords (AKA The KLF) had a number one single called Doctorin' the TARDIS in the first week of June that year, which was probably released about the time you were born.

Looking at filming dates and location filming dates seem more available online rather than studio. I was trying to see if any specific stories or scenes were filmed on 3rd May 1988. Around that time, there was an asbestos discovery which meant studio closure until it was removed. This was during Season 25. I'm avoiding spoilers of course as a story title being filmed around that time does give the game away. Will still keep looking. Edit: No luck I'm afraid. May 1988 itself looks blank, both in broadcasting - checked the BBC Genome - and for filming dates.

I've just checked Andrew Cartmel's published journal ('Script Doctor'). According to him, they were in pre-production on the third (as broadcast) story, on the day Jess was born.

SN. Yes? Which was heavy on location shooting. That was at the time, also, of the asbestos find at the studios.

Just to reiterate Jess. She was born on 3rd May 1988. You may have double-checked yourself since then. 👍

Well, the closest I can get to Doctor Who in May in related material is the release of Doctorin' the TARDIS by The Timelords (also known as The KLF) which was released on the 23rd May 1988.
