Geordie Joe

A mysterious alien called John who can regenerate his body after suffering a near-fatal injury? I wonder if that was an intentional nod to Doctor Who or just a coincidence. Just one more week to go until the season 3 finale reaction. I'm buying some popcorn for that one. 👀

In concept, this story is very close to the 1972 Jon Pertwee story, The Mutants, with a race going through a similar, though more complex, transformation sequence. Noticed that at the time. 👍

This one has always felt to me like the crew just burning off a random script to fill a gap in the schedule while keeping their focus entirely on the big finale next week. That abrupt ending just feels super off, like no one really cared about giving the story a proper denouement and just wanted to move on as soon as possible. At least we get a surprisingly good guest appearance by soap opera star Mark LaMura, who's pretty compelling in an increasingly complex role. And he does it all while saddled with an outfit seemingly designed to inexorably draw the eye to his penis no matter how much you try to resist. Now, on to the real show next time, and it's going to be a doozy.

Yeah, I’ve been noting that you’ve been filming Next Gen reactions same day as the Invincible reactions. Sorry to hear you had a bad headache before starting this episode. Thankfully, Jess, we both got some good stuff for season three’s penultimate hour: a solid Beverly episode, with a good Geordi focus as well. I mean, it’s not my birthday till next month, but terrific. “Intriguing” is a good word for this one. They do a great job with the mystery and the amnesia with John Doe. You spoke about the portrayal of the amnesia. I’m no expert. As it is presented here, I do like that you liked it. Mark LaMura is good as John Doe, and he and Gates had a good rapport. You say how you’re a big champion of the Picard/Beverly of it all, which, of course, that makes two of us. That probably goes without saying at this point in the game. We do find it interesting when they have these intimate connections like Beverly has with John here, aided by John appreciating Beverly being a kind, compassionate, and genuine soul. ...Which she is. We both enjoyed the sweet moment that Wesley had with his mom. The mystery picks up in earnest when we establish John’s ability to heal, such as O’Brien’s shoulder Funny to hear you say that you wanted O’Brien’s kayaking outfit. Stress spikes when Worf died. We all understand that the Worf Effect is a thing, but isn’t that taking the concept just a wee bit too far. Fantastic seeing your love and concern for Worf to the point that you demanded that John hopped to in getting Worf back to being right as rain. I’d say you could ask him to turn some water into wine so as to combat the stress, but I don’t think that would have been the best idea, not with the headache. Tension rises when John’s people show up, and demand him delivered. Love Picard, Beverly, and Deanna having the discussion about that. Bad guy gets on everyone’s shit list with the group choking. It is something how John saves everyone, and evolves to what he becomes. Adore Patrick selling Picard’s reverence, and Gates being beautiful during the scene where John imparts the farewell to Beverly. Shame he then has to leave. More so as he’d be handy to have around if something absurdly catastrophic is right around the corner. On the other hand, Picard did say about the Enterprise was experiencing a refreshingly uncharacteristic quiet time. Ah. Probably not a concern. The other big highlight of the episode being the Geordi romance, which, by the way, I’d be down to see a whole episode of Geordi romance. I’d most certainly live for the astonishingly wonderful reaction that you would have, Jess. Not entirely sure that Worf is the best choice for a wingman. Quick sidenote: Kept seeing Worf’s libation of choice, and kept asking, “...Is he drinking Pepto Bismol?” Love how Worf made the faux pas with the remark about one’s eyes, and LeVar silently responds to that before just letting it slide. Nice to see Julie Warner as Christy again. Alas, I think this is the last time we see her. I hope I’m wrong on that, but I think she goes the way that Sonya did. Poor Geordi cannot catch a break with the ladies. I do love how you instantly had the “I’m in!” response to how the episode opened. Then when we first meet John how you suspect that that will be the more primary focus. How you said that you were still wanting at least some focus on the romance of it all with Geordi, made me smile, and say, “Ask, and it shall be given unto you.” Subsequently, the small “Yes!” chorus that you had, and the small screams of joy when we circled back to that, lovely moment of the reaction, Jess. All of it was very sweet, and Geordi was suave. Nice moment when he thanked John and John said how Geordi likely already had the confidence. Made me say, “Jess is going to love that sentiment.” Indeed, you had a nice “Aw!” at that part which we love to see it. All in all, just a lovely reaction to season three’s penultimate hour. Much appreciated, Jess.

For being what’s considered a “filler” episode, it’s still a damn good one. Helping is the Beverly focus, and the Geordi romance made it real fun to share with Jess. Mark LaMura delivered a real good performance. The note of his outfit... Less distracting than the pants that David Bowie had in Labyrinth, so that’s something. The absence of the denouement is a strike against this, true. I would have loved for a scene of Picard and Beverly having tea and discussing what happened. Alternatively, you could have had one more scene with Geordi and Christy. I’m sure Jess would have VERY much been in favor of that.

Ryan

I kept hoping Christy would show up as a future badass in Lower Decks like Sonya got to do, but sadly it never happened. Although that show's crew does keep talking about other ideas they had that they're still trying to get out somehow.

Damn, I would have liked to have heard if she showed up there. Alas. Maybe one day, we get to see her again.
