You say, “This is going to be a complicated episode. Isn’t it?”, fair description, Jess. Your question of why they didn’t just name the episode This is Complicated, likewise, fair. Yet another episode of the season where a significant theme is fathers and sons. Yeah, this whole episode is a great example of a dilemma with no clean answers. Loved your response to the opening of the pondering of could there have been a trap. No trap, just a complicated dilemma. I wouldn’t worry about your complaint that it wasn’t a Worf centric episode. I have heard that this is a shared response as fan complaints are that Worf wasn’t the one to forge the connection with Jono, and there is a case for that, given Worf’s backstory. I see Ryan has commented on it as well. You also posit that Geordi could have taken the role. Would have been interesting, though LeVar was still recovering from his surgery, hence his appearance being only recycled footage in this episode. It is a great examination of a child of two worlds, and how do you assess what is the proper course of action. I know you said that there were elements of the Talarian way of life that you would bristle against, not least of which is the sexism. Obviously, the hyper patriarchal aspect of the species isn’t great. How they say that women can’t do but two things on their planet: Jack and shit, and Jack left town. I take that in, and say, “Well, how horrible for your people.” Your own reaction to learning that piece of information about the Talarians was about what I expected it would be. Love the scenes of Picard, Beverly, and Deanna. My three favorites of the main crew getting excellent time together and being so great, lovely to see it. We both really liked how Beverly clocks the injuries, and given available information, the conclusion reached being abuse is understandable. Endar clears it up, and even then, it sounds concerning. Endar excuses it as youthful high spirits to impress one’s father, my brother and I never pulled any shit THAT STUPID to try to impress our dad. Hell, he’d have been as mad as hell if we ever did pull shit like that. Leads to the central thing of Picard trying to reach the boy. Picard is me when the kid started touching his stuff in an indelicate way. I’d definitely snap if the kid touched certain things of mine, and yell, “PUT THAT DOWN THIS INSTANT!!”. Picard, by contrast, is nicer about it than I. Great scene when Deanna has the talk with Picard. Picard does overlook how he’s essentially become Wesley’s dad. Deanna reads Picard to filth about how he’ll brave all the heroic feats yet bristle at assuming the parental role, I’d say in Picard’s place, “You say that like it’s bad.” Mind you, Picard and I would have the same level of panic that you observed Picard having, so, well, that’s me told. You speak as well about not being the best with kids, so we are in a similar boat as Picard is in. Quite a quiet emotional moment when Picard observed how he more or less skipped over his childhood altogether. That’s me as well, only more precisely, I think I skipped over my adolescence/teenage years. I loved how you really felt as bad as you did for Jono. The difficulty of dealing with reawakened memories. And he has the impending age of decision, which sounds akin to Confirmation, so yeah, the boy is at a fragile state as Deanna senses. You also raise the excellent question of would the boy even be alive if Endar hadn’t taken him. Perhaps. Perhaps not. We will likely never know. And it gets further complicated when the boy receives the message from his grandma. And yes, it is nice that the boy’s grandma is an admiral, no doubt pissing off Janice Lester something fierce. (Probably pissed off Roddenberry as well.) Gives us all a jolt when the kid stabs Picard, making me quip, “Et tu, Jono?” Loved Beverly being a bit strict with Picard saying that he can see Jono when she’s finished. It does signal to Picard that Jono is really in such a bad state, and you can tell it provides the majority of the motivation to return Jono to the man who has become his father. You can see Patrick expertly sell Picard’s silent questions of is he ultimately doing the right thing, and it’s great to leave it on that note. I heard, I might be wrong on specifics, that there is an expanded universe novel that touches upon this episode, again, see Ryan made mention of it as well, which says that Jono does ultimately continue to stay with Endar whilst maintaining some type of correspondence and relationship with his family on Earth. Not sure of the canonicity of said novel, though I like the idea of that, if nothing else. No idea if the events of this episode ever got touched on in Lower Decks, nor do I recall if this episode received a follow up within this series. I might be wrong on that, and if I am, I apologize if there’s spoilers in my comment. In any event, we leave it on that bittersweet note, that I love that you really loved it so, Jess. This season is knocking it out of the park, yes. Thank you for the lovely reaction, Jess.

The writers doubling down on the family theme in season 4. Nice seeing Picard getting a small taste of what it's like being a parent. I think he warmed up to idea of being a father figure after his initial reluctance to help Jono. There is a cool picture of Patrick Stewart reading the script for this episode while dressed as Locutus of Borg. It was taken between takes of The Best of Both Words - Part 2. It kind of looks like Locutus is trying to assimilate the script. https://tinyurl.com/SuddenlyHuman
