We both lived for Catherine’s scene of Gail being a diva in the later scene. I’m with Gail on Ellie being a big fat liar. And though I admire Tommy’s defense of Ellie, Gail sees through it, Ellie is a liar. I also applaud Gail’s strategy of the drinking. Don’t go for weed, nor do I smoke. But say I reach Gail’s age or older, I could see myself taking up cigar or pipe smoking. I’ll probably sound like Alan Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine when he tells Paul Dano’s character not to do drugs, for the reason, “When you’re young, you’re crazy to do that stuff.”, and when he’s called out for his own drug use, he defends himself, yelling, “What about me!? I’m old! When you get old, you’re crazy not to do it!” Same basic idea. Don’t know enough about baseball to ascertain how mean Gail was with her remark about the Tigers. Come to think of it, though, the baseball talk triggers the realization that the world ended before the Steve Bartman incident, so this whole fungal pandemic is not a total loss. I fear that Gail might be right about some people not being able to be saved pertaining to Ellie. Bringing us to this one group that looked like wannabe Whisperers, who, none of them are Samantha Morton, so, pass. Rather something when they get massacred. And Ellie says that of course Abby and her group are responsible for this. So she says. Proximity is close so it is possible. Only two flaws that I can see at the moment: one, we do not see the attack, and by extension, we do not see Abby’s group doing this, I see Ryan made the White Tiger comparison, similar thought on my end as well. Two, FEDRA’s ruled out as the ammunition is too varied. Judging by this militia’s armory, they have consistent weaponry as well, Abby’s group looked the same. Ellie doesn’t see what we see, even so, already she’s failing to adhere to one of the great wisdoms of the world: Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgment. There’s also the question, now I think about it, how certain are we that Abby IS in Seattle at the present time? We DO see Manny, but not Abby. The thought of they don’t know for sure that Abby was going back to Seattle. On the other hand, it is their only viable lead, though it looks like it was a bad idea to head there, like you recalled Abby mention, which in fairness, they knocked Dina out by then. Increases your nervous levels something fierce when seeing the ending scene, that’s for goddamn sure. Again, not played the games, though I have vague bits and pieces of information. Cannot speak of them at the present time, which includes some casting notes. One of which I’m told is a reprisal from the game, and I caught an image of a thumbnail of next week’s episode’s sneak peek, so I take it I can talk more about that next week. Other quick notes: It was probably there before and I just didn’t notice it, but neat that Ellie has a poster for The Matrix at the house. Imagine that raised a few questions at one point or another. I know it’s from the game, this Cobra and Viper film series. Hearing the way it’s described, I’m starting to get the feeling that Joel had SHIT taste in film as this Cobra and Viper what have you sounds like Jean-Claude Van Damme or Steven Segal shit. They could have at least taken Pedro’s love for Gene Hackman and given that to Joel, better still, almost all of Gene’s filmography would have survived, so Ellie could have watched some real damn fine films. Ah, well. So, all in all, a less viscerally heart shattering episode this week, though still a most wonderful reaction, Jess, thanks.

I know less about sports than anyone in the world, but TV Tropes had me covered and says the 2003 Tigers were indeed notoriously terrible, with one of the worst win-loss ratios in the sport's history. The season premiere also had the 2003 People issue with Jennifer Aniston on the cover, which she posted this last week she was delighted about.

Lovely moment with Tommy saying goodbye to Joel. In the game he was at the lodge with Joel and gets knocked out, but here we can see how much he's hurting (tbf they do that well in the game also but its played differently). Touching moment when he asks Joel to give Sarah his love, his brother is back with her now at least. Bella got to me with that primal scream with it all coming back to her briefly. That lass has a set of lungs on her for a wee thing! And yes, seeing the title sequence only showing Ellie on her own at the end "I'm frightened of ending up alone", hits hard. The time jump is a surprise as in the game Ellie and Dina set off for Seattle within two days; but I like this better, as there is something in the game with Abby's crew that felt a bit off, this gives what I'm thinking about, more sense. Ellie having a busted lung and ribs is taken from one of the early drafts of the story, so its cool they brought that back. And it shows us that the community at Jackson is trying to get back on their feet, and the last thing most of them want to do, is to seek "justice" for what happened to Joel. Ellie lying through her teeth to Gail; she won't open up to her, she has never got on well with authority figures. Gail sees right through her though and is of the opinion she will do what she is so set upon doing, come hook or by crook. And we see her drop the facade as she exits the hospital. Love the little fedora hat in Ellie's old room back at Joel's place - that is one hell of an obscure Easter Egg from the game! I didn't manage to get it on my first playthrough, and I hope we see the scene from where it originates, as its one of the best sections of the whole game. Ellie picking up Joel's gun and sniffing his coat, is powerful; anyone who has lost someone, as we all will do throughout our lives, knows that sometimes memories of them come flooding back, if going through their old clothes or bedding, and you pick up their scent - its such a human thing. This show and the games explore the human condition expertly, especially in the second game with which we are in here and for the third season. It takes it all out of you, the emotions of loss, fear, regret, anger, hate, numbness, guilt, trauma and depression. Its heavy heavy stuff, but its done so well in the games, and I hope the series can nail most of what the games tell us - so far so good anyway. Surprised to see the Seraphites/Scars so early, but I think I know why they are being introduced now. They might reference why they are scarred, so I won't explain it right now, it doesn't matter too much, only that Ellie and Dina won't just be dealing with the WLF... Jesse is great, such a cool down-to-Earth dude. He is mixed about what Ellie is suggesting. Of course he understands her, and liked Joel too, but he has to think of the community and whether leaving Jackson vulnerable, as 16 people go out on this vendetta is the best course of action, especially as they are rebuilding. We have to talk about Seth! In the game, he's only in the two scenes we've already seen, but its great they are giving him more, to speak about the anger and vengeance he wants. Some people call it his "redemption" when he gives Ellie and Dina the gear and weapons. No, he is an angry old xenophobic bigot, and the last thing Ellie should be doing, is agreeing with him. He is the devil on her shoulder, prodding at her, reminding her of that last moment of Joel's life, and the rage thats inside her that will not be quelled healthily. This isn't a redemption for his character, its doubling down on what a pitiful person he is. And I love that he has a limp and is talking about vengeance; as that echoes with two potential characters later. I do think there is something to what Gail says. Ellie is a creature born of violence into a violent world. Growing up with FEDRA couldn't have been a happy time for her, so she got up to all sorts of mischief and subsequently lies about what she did, so it becomes second nature to her. She doesn't like authority figures, be it FEDRA, Joel running her life, the council here at Jackson, or Gail herself, so falls back on lying or pushing back. Secondly, she has some deep rooted rage inside her. A lot of it is due to how much the infected have took from her over the years; her mother, probably her father, Tess, Riley, Sam, and we see some of that anger at them in the third episode of the series when she waves her flick-knife at the infected before striking it. David brings a lot of that anger and rage to the surface, then it seems to settle back down; but this journey for "justice" is one where it will potentially rise once more with vengeance, and could destroy her. Because she won't be honest with herself, she is set to go down a very dark and dangerous road, and that's what Gail meant imho. The music in this episode is outstanding. So many of the themes from both games are in it, and brings it all back whenever I hear them. I swear, if I hear the Longing theme this season, it will break me! As we see with Ellie visiting Joel's grave, we feel that connection to them and him. Though he is no longer with us, he is still central to this story, so his influence lives with us and the characters, for better and worse. Dina : "I guess there aren't that many Wolves" - oh Dina! We see some of the Wolves at that end scene, and there are a lot of them, a fraction of which we see here. They are well armed and well trained; this isn't Kathleen's lot you'll be dealing with; this is an experienced militia, at war. You have no idea what you are stepping into lass! Next episode, Seattle : Day One...

Like I said, I find myself relieved that we never see the moment where Tommy learns that Joel is dead. That one would be too painful. Tis a moment when Tommy asks Joel to give Sarah his love. Reminds me too, are we ever going to touch on Sarah’s mom? I would assume she’s dead before the pandemic given Sarah never expresses worry or concern about her mom when the shit hit the fan. Without wishing to detract from Bella’s award-winning performance, realistically, I don’t think that Ellie could let out a scream like that if she’s getting at least one of her lungs reinflated from the looks of it. Recalls Sir Christopher Lee explaining to Peter Jackson that someone stabbed in the back wouldn’t scream, and instead, it would sound like a gasp. The emotion of the scene is powerful enough to let the realism slide. Heard the three months later was new, though considering the catastrofuck of an attack that they survived by the skin of their teeth, that makes sense. Like I said, Gail brought up Lydia Deetz and Kevin McCallister, Ellie’s shtick is tame by comparison. Gail knows Ellie will do what she’ll do. Something to see when as Ellie walks away, you see her face fall. The smell triggering memories is very real. Be interesting if Ellie goes through the thing of your mind just recalling random moments and memories; the ones that just hit you out of the blue that make you break down crying. So, the one group, I see that you used both names that I’ve been seeing everyone use. Left me puzzled as to what to call them, so I settled on calling them wannabe Whisperers, albeit they don’t have Samantha Morton leading them, so they got that big strike against them already. Jesse is a realistic middle ground with Ellie. He gets where she’s coming from, yet what she wants is not that simple. Good on him for telling her to write things down, particularly as people don’t vote for anger. (Which, yeah, Jesse, about that...) Rather nice that here on Jess’s patreon, you guys are still holding Seth’s feet to the fire. I have heard the comments about his “redemption” and I ain’t buying it. His entire speech just has that tone of the xenophobic alt-right horseshit that is far too prevalent in this day and age. Ellie is too blinded by that bloodlust and desire for revenge. Quietly satisfying to see Seth with the limp following the friendly (allegedly) fire. Yeah, Gail summarizes well. A child born into violent world only ever really knows violence, and violence begets violence. The murderous rage within her is fueled by everyone she’s lost. You mention David, and it’s interesting how Ellie lied to Dina about her second kill. One, she wasn’t the one to end the life of Bryan, not to mention she looked pretty damn traumatized in that scene. Second, her actual second kill, as I recall, was Joel, er, I mean, uh, James, shortly before she struck David down with ALL of her hatred. Telling us that five years later, she hasn’t processed that trauma and still refuses to talk about it. Ellie is set to go down a very dark and dangerous road, so I’ve been hearing for the last five years. See if we get the longing theme. The grave scene does good on keeping Joel maintaining a presence through his absence. Still think it’s a waste of perfectly good coffee beans. The two young ladies come across the aftermath of the bloodbath, and have to ask: Can you find the wolves in this picture? Plenty of wolves they are facing off against. We didn’t think it was going to be that easy. This ain’t Kathleen we’re dealing with. No, she’s busy with ladies like Christina Ricci and Juliette Lewis. (I’d make a more precise reference, but I haven’t seen that show.) To war, as you say. There will be no dawn... for men.
