I loved this episode. Paul Giamatti was amazing. I loved that they didn't have a perfect relationship and yet this process redeemed the memories for him.

Love that you went into this one completely blind. Me, I had heard that this was one of the saddest episodes of the season, if not the saddest. Given the lead actor, whom I knew in advance would be in this, I had no reason to doubt that. So, I picked a sad day, waited until it was night to sit down and watch this episode. People were right about this being the saddest one. Or if not strictly speaking saddest, it is the one that made me fucking weep the most. As with last week being seated and paying attention as it was the Peter Capaldi episode, I was doing the same thing for this one as this is the Paul Giamatti episode. Whom like Peter, I knew in advance that he’d be in this season, and it made me greatly excited to see the episode, wary though I became when hearing people sell how sad it was. I swear to God, Paul keeps his reputation going of playing characters that are VISCERALLY relatable on a deep level. Miles in Sideways being the chief example, a character that like how you said with Shirley in Hill House, is a character I point to, and say, “THAT’S me. That is me as a fucking character, right there.” His role here as Phillip continues the trend. Where the FUCK is that man’s goddamn Oscar? You spoke well of how this episode, contrary to the usual series reputation, shows a rare case where the advanced technology can be beautiful. Yes, knowing what you’ve spoken of in your life, you would have the strong emotional resonance with the concept here. You clock early through Paul’s facial acting that Carol was someone very important to Phillip. He has the help through his memory journey with help from Kelly, played by Patsy Ferran who impressed me. I too love the mess of this. How both parties had their faults, without being thoroughly demonized or villainized. Obviously, Phillip got in on that with how he spoke of Carol. And that is a realistic thing, as you say, short of the fuller picture and context, you only really have one’s own feelings and memories to rely on. Love how Kelly doesn’t entirely undermine nor invalidate his feelings, whilst occasionally calling him out when he took his venting a bit too far. Shared thing of clocking Kelly being more important. Likewise, we both clocked Carol being pregnant. I too did not deduce Kelly was Carol’s daughter until that reveal. We had similar reactions there. Hearing certain pieces of dialogue again in the reaction, the foreshadowing stands out more. Rather oddly sweet how Phillip and Kelly do sort of commiserate about her father. God does the heart shatter when Phillip learns about the letter and what could have been. Just as the heart shatters for Carol. Loved how you said that as well, how the heart broke for both of them in relatively equal measure. It really got me when Phillip listens to the cello piece, goes to the funeral, sees Kelly, ending on his smile as he finally remembers Carol’s face. Oh, I broke, I fucking BROKE. We both had the dread of how bad the tears would be at about the same time. You handled the ending better than I. And even then, Jesus, did you get me to cry, Jess. I so adored and treasured every single thing that you had to say in the post episode thoughts. I am not attempting to improve on any of it. Of what I have seen of Black Mirror, which is last season, and at present, this season, up to this episode, this is my favorite episode. I’m pushing my brother to see this one, stressing how the show is anthology, and he has the shared adoration for Paul. I am also pushing my brother to see Peter’s episode as there is likewise, the shared love for Peter. This is the best episode of the season. I say that and I have yet to see the next episode, (and the episode prior, which I’ll watch that before seeing the new one,) but I’m calling it, this one was the best episode of the season. Thank you, seriously, THANK YOU for your reaction to this episode, Jess. Again, everything you had to say about this one, appreciate it.
