As I mentioned on youtube, I instantly thought of you once it became clear what the heavy and sensitive topic of the episode was. Almost wanted to warn you, but one, that would spoil the reaction, two, I knew you had already seen the episode. Really have little to say on the case. The brotherly energy was very strongly relatable in this one. Loved Sam’s strong little brother energy here. One good example being when they think that Dean just had a bender, and how he’s reminding Dean that they’re not in their twenties anymore, they’re in their thirties, and in Dean’s case, nearer forty than thirty. The little brother energy kept getting stronger when Sam starts clocking the signs, the biggest probably being Dean not knowing what key was for the Impala. That would induce a heart attack, I should think. Made you push for Sam to drive. Serious question: does Dean even let Sam drive the Impala? If he can help it, I mean? And as you noted, there were humorous moments, such as Dean comparing himself to Dory, we both had the “Fair.” response to him expressing refusal to apologize for loving that fish. He also compares the situation to Memento. One other obvious comparison would be to the film Regarding Henry, hence the name Regarding Dean here, since you made a comment on that. It is something weird, and it don’t look good. So, who we gonna call? Rowena! (Yes, I too caught the name in the credits, you would think they’d learn their lesson by now.) Testing woman though Rowena is, I do like that you say she might make top five characters of the show for you. If I’m being generous, she might, at a push, make top ten for me. You spoke of it being apparent when you knew the episode would become difficult for you, perfectly understandable given your experiences that you reiterated. I could see it in your eyes when that happened, Jess, yes. Watching that mirror scene was a moment that I grew worried about what your reaction would be, and though tamer than what I anticipated, you had the reaction that I knew was coming. Kudos to Jensen with that scene. There’s the other scene with Sam saying that although he’s seen Dean die before, this slow death is worse. Rowena provides some levity, though she got shockingly sincere at the one point as she knew Dean wouldn’t remember. She had the good move with the post it notes. Love the one on the grenade launcher. Nice how she’s settling into a similar dynamic that her son has with the boys in being an occasionally friendly adversary. Man, does it get you when Dean said Sam’s name when hearing him over the phone. They all three got shit done at the end. It is also something when Sam admits to the jealousy of Dean being unburdened of the trauma, and that he looked happy. Dean raises the good point of the curse of the lost knowledge, particularly as it would also mean losing memory of those such as Bobby or Charlie. Loved your assessment of that. And I do agree with you on we all have the experiences and people and memories in our lives. Some of them are good. Some of them are bad. Either way, they do shape us. Nice to hear you have little to no regrets. I do. I have oodles. Some of which, I can’t change. It’s like what Kingpin once said, “I’ve made mistakes. In the years since I was a boy. I try to learn from them, but it isn’t always enough.” In the end, this reaction was quite an emotional one, Jess, thank you.
