This is such a beautiful, phenomenal episode of Supernatural. It perfectly blends together humor and heaviness, without overplaying the hand one way or another, at least in my opinion. Jensen absolutely killed his scenes, especially that bathroom scene, and it was just a masterclass in acting the way he slowly transitioned from comedy to tragedy. Jared as well, was incredible, and you could literally see the toll growing on Sam as Dean declined. They played off of each other so well, even more so then they usually do. But my favorite thing about this episode is how, even after having lost all his memories, after the spell progressed so far, Dean still heard Sammy screaming and knew exactly who it was. He is so tuned to his baby brother, that even over the phone, he recognizes his screams. I do have to say, while I agree Rowena and Dean have amazing chemistry, I absolutely adore her with 'Samuel.' I feel like most extra characters in the show tend to gravitate more towards Dean, and tend to be a lot closer to him, but Rowena seems pulled a lot more towards Sam, and there is a closeness there, despite being natural enemies, that has been developing since season 10. Even the way she calls him Samuel, and he just lets her, is adorable.

They do balance the tones well. That mirror scene hurt, more so when it got Jess as it did, which I KNEW that was coming. You can see the growing toll on Sam throughout. The brotherly energy is some of the most relatable in this one. Dean very much sounded like my brother when he spoke of his feelings for Dory. My brother’s the same way with Patrick from SpongeBob, and he definitely has the stance, “I’m not going to apologize for loving that starfish, not to you, not to anyone.” And like Sam here with Dory, I don’t argue against it. Yeah, that is a standout moment of the episode when Dean hears Sam screaming over the phone and he knows who it is, love that Jess clocked that as well. Rowena does have an interesting energy with Sam. Good note on how she calls him by his full name, and he never really corrects her.
