A rather expeditious speed in which the list of characters that annoy you is growing. I suspected Narvaez would remain at the top of the annoyance list for you. Seems hypocritical of her to accuse Maggie of selfishness when she keeps banging the New Babylon drum. Perlie has been doing the same with the banging on the drum, though you get the sense that he believes in it for what it could represent more than what it really is. Loving how you keep saying that you want to like him. The one group they came across was interesting. The heart ritual was a curious choice. We got more flashbacks of Hershel’s captivity with the Dama plying him with poisoned honeys. One of which was peanut brittle. I hate peanut brittle, and I doubt that I would like the walnut concoction. Surprising to see that you did not need a new tv after her one scene of spouting out about Maggie’s obsession of revenge against Negan. Speaking of Negan, Negan is looking pretty haggard as of late. He gave the one guy the slip, loved your reaction there. Don’t worry, I too had the “To get to the other side” response to his one joke. Hell of a thing when he and Hershel crossed paths. Hershel lies to Maggie that there was no gunshot, makes me bemoan, “Gaslighting your mother is no way to go through life, son.” He also brings up about Maggie not seeing him. Just as it has been, you continue to have most excellent insights into the Negan and Maggie discourse. And whilst the Dama and Narvaez do paint a very simplistic picture of Maggie and her trauma with Negan, they do have some truth sprinkled in. Maggie really can’t let go of the pain and trauma, Negan himself knows that and gets it. There are the times, as you say, when yes, she does let that pain overwhelm to the point she has blinders on. It happened a bit here when Hershel brought up seeing Negan, she laser focused on that pretty goddamn quick. You approach the topic with fantastic clarity, nuance, and complete sympathy and empathy, and I love hearing your thoughts on all of it, Jess. You do hope that mother and son can hash things out more with some honest conversation. A slight problem is that the efforts to have an honest conversation, both parties inadvertently trip over a trigger or two. Hopefully it will happen sooner rather than later, certainly before Hershel may or may not do something horrible, though even if he does, his spot on your list is fixed. Hear you on wanting more Ginny, though she’s spotting some loose threads, and I’m looking forward to more of her. Bringing us to the Croat. You say you don’t particularly like him much. I’m loving the Croat just as much as I was last season, Željko is amazing in this show. He was certainly vibing in this episode, yes. I do like how you got the kick out of him vibing in this episode, and that you do find him fascinating. Interesting to hear of how he met the Dama. You can tell that he senses that there is more to Negan’s account of what happened in the woods. Certainly, he clocks the blood on Negan’s hands. As you noted, he is likely happy that Negan is back to Neganing, and that might distract enough, though the Croat whilst psychotic, is not stupid. He’s going to keep an eye on Negan. I’ve loved how they’ve held off on reuniting Negan and Maggie for as long as they have. It will be something when they do reunite, and it says something when although their scenes and dynamics do dredge up the old pain and trauma, it is preferable to the other characters annoying you. If nothing else, I love your analyses of their scenes, so we have that to look forward to when it happens. Thanks for the great Dead City reaction, Jess.
