i also love this episode! I hated it the first time I watched it, but when I saw it again and what they were really doing with it, it just all hit differently. Sam is such a BAMF here, taking on Remiel, and Cas' speech, and Misha's performance is just stunning. Low-key furious at Mary though, for everything she did here, and putting the boys in this kind of danger without telling them why

This is such an incredible episode but the point that always gets me (and I fully admit my Sam-bias is probably why), is that this episode gives us a glimpse into what was supposed to happen to Sam. Michael fully intended to use that lance on Lucifer, possessing Sam, so what we see Cas go through was supposed to be Sam's fate. But, because he is a badass MF, who screws destiny right in the face, Sam instead takes the weapon that might have been his death, and uses it to turn the tables and take out a Prince of Hell (fitting end for a Prince as well, to be killed by the Boy King). I love how, even years later, Sammy is still defying the destiny he was assigned, and making his own way, fighting the good fight, with his family at his side. And if he couldn't take out Azazel, at least he did get to take out one of the Yellow Eyed bastards, which is why i think the writers gave him the kill. Cuz if anyone deserves to murder a demon prince, it is Sam freaking Winchester
