This episode predictably has gotten a lot of praise from the disabled community, who cite it as a great way to reach people who might have trouble comprehending what it's like. And a big part of that is how much of a jerk Deanna is allowed to be about the situation, which everyone perfectly understands, and from what I've heard is very common with newly disabled people. Marina knows exactly how much to push all this while still coming off in character, and while it's never really brought up, it's easy to imagine a big part of her frustration is knowing that as far as everyone she's talking to is concerned, she's much more Ricky Bobby than Maggie Fitzgerald, talking about a sense they never had in the first place and can't comprehend. The analogy of blindness is brought up a few times, which does make it a bit weird that there's never a scene of her talking with Geordi about it. I'd gladly sacrifice some of the 2D alien plot, which the episode barely seems to care about anyway down to a rushed "We can do a bullshit bullshit to the horseshit" explanation, to get that. This script was a very unusual project for Hilary Bader, who was mostly a DC comics writer, but however it happened, she turned out to be really good at it. I also have to single out the fantastic guest role by Kim Braden, who does a great double acting job where the grief is always visible even during her biggest attempts to push it down. There must be something in the air, because I've also found myself with serious trouble sleeping lately, no matter how tired I feel. And it's too bad you couldn't get a bit more of a fun one at the moment, though as memory serves that should be coming soon. As always when this comes up, I urge you to focus on self-care most of all and take all the time off you need.

I think that's the quickest a Star Trek episode has made you tear up. Another solid episode. I'm trying to remember if this season actually has any dud episodes or not now. It's been quite a few years since I did a full season 4 rewatch. I kind of love angry, aggressive Troi. You can hear Marina Sirtis use the voice she would later use for Demona in Disney's "Gargoyles". Picard's decision to pair Troi with Data makes complete sense. Even with her empathic abilities, Data has always been emotionally blank to her, so in a sense she is back in her comfort zone, allowing her to focus more clearly on the problem at hand. Anytime Data has consulted with her about the human condition, she has done so without ever relying on her abilities. Great reaction, Jess. You genuinely made me tear up a few times during this one. Hope you managed to get some rest after this reaction.

Yeah, I’ve heard that this episode has the strong response from the disabled community. I heard Marina is quite proud of that legacy of the episode. It is indeed a great way to reach people who might have trouble comprehending what it’s like. Deanna’s response is definitely analogous to someone newly disabled/someone newly diagnosed with some form of disability. Marina strikes the perfect balance, yes. Good note on how Deanna likely thinks that the crew is treating her as if she’s putting that evil on them, rather than the situation being more Mo chuisle in nature. Speaking of that, it’s been some time since I’ve seen that film, and I forgot Maggie’s last name. So, the reference did not instantly click, though googling it, I went, “Oh! Right.” I have heard about that of it being weird that Deanna never talks to Geordi given the blindness analogies. One thing I note is that Geordi has always been blind, so there is no before to compare to an after, nor is there any period of acclimation experience with which he could share with Deanna. I’d be in the same boat with my autism in that there really is little to no memory of a before the diagnosis, so I couldn’t really tell her what it would be like to have been diagnosed well into adulthood, and thus, how you acclimate, particularly with how people’s perception of you changes. I could talk to her about how there is the greater awareness now compared to three decades ago, and how that does help. Kim Braden did excellent work in this one. Sorry to hear that you caught whatever it is that’s in the air that’s affected Jess, rest-wise, and myself as well. Albeit, as mentioned, I never sleep well, though it’s been feeling worse as of late. The mind has been particularly loud this recent month. Second the note about the self-care.

Yeah, this did get Jess teary-eyed pretty much right away, which was something to see. In terms of duds of the season, barring delays, I think we got at least one in early July. Marina having some of that Demona energy is great to see, just as it’s always the loveliest thing when Jonathan taps into the Xanatos energy. I love that show. That’s a good note you made about Picard providing Deanna with the touch of the familiar as Data, having no emotions, (much though Jess always calls bullshit on that, I’m with her on that,) the blank slate there would be somewhat soothing. And it works as the effective reversal of when Data would confer with her about the human condition. Jess gets me to cry a lot, this one, she did a very good job with that. Hoping that if she didn’t get the rest after filming and editing, that she’s getting it sooner rather than later.
