You might be able to understand the shockwaves this episode sent throughout the fandom. A secret incarnation of the Doctor that no one knew about? It is completely insane, outrageous and bold. And he's played by John Hurt?? Is he from the future or the past? I was totally dumbfounded after seeing this finale for the first time. Easily the best episode of the season, and certainly one of the best ever. There are so many abstract concepts that are beautifully visualised in this episode. The characters are great, the story is bonkers and exciting and the answer to the Clara mystery is amazing. For me, this is pretty damn close to perfect Doctor Who. In 2013, i was wondering if we even needed a 50th anniversay special after this! Wonderful reaction, as always. I really can't wait for your season 7 review

Yes, I loved the reaction. Usually I have to set up the episode and your reaction to watch simultaneously. With this episode, that wasn't necessary. I've watched it enough times to follow along. It was nice to see River again, post-library. Your reaction was similar to much of the fandom. I can't wait for December. It's going to be fantastic to see your reaction to what comes next. Really enjoyed this. As I mentioned in the YouTube comments, I think at least some of the surprise of the cliffhanger depends on how big a star you consider John Hurt to be, and obviously I have no idea of how much you knew of him outside of this. I was very excited when he turned up, although I already knew he was going to have a role in the show as it had been a big entertainment news story in the UK earlier in the year, when he was cast.

Yup - I had no idea JH was appearing in DW as I'd been delierately avoiding usual places for DW news to avoid getting spoiled - this was a huge shock - Hurt is a huge star and this was epic surprise. Took a little while to work out who he was supposed to be - and a stunningly bold move by Moffat to do this. Couldn't have worked out any better way. If it doesn't quite make sense yet, don't worry - it'll all be clear by January!
