Getting REAL About Xbox Game Pass... | Defining Duke, Episode 245

Much of the conversation surrounding Game Pass and its sustainability has been about whether or not it can turn a profit. The Dukes themselves have pondered on this very subject for dozens of episodes. At this point, Game Pass is here to stay. The conversation has evolved from how much money the service makes to whether or not it dramatically impacts how games are made. At first, PlayStation alumni Shawn Layden brought attention to this subject. While well respected and incredibly knowledgable, many believed that Shawn bled a bit too much blue for their taste and that his points may be biased. That's fair to say, but what happens when many of Xbox's own start to say the same? Much of our conversation is about what Pete Hines, the former SVP of Communication and Marketing at Bethesda, had to say on Xbox's premier service. However, it's really about the fallout from it. Shannon Loftis, a Xbox lifer who spent 20+ years at the company, sang a similar tune to that of Pete and Shawn. Even MachineGames current studio head had thoughts on how Game Pass players dip very quickly. Even recently, Larian's own Swen Vincke had his concerns about Game Pass. Raphael Colantonio, formerly of Arkane and now at WolfEye, shared a similar sentiment. While indie and even AA have found a pocket from which they very much benefit from Game Pass, AAA is speaking out. The question remains: Are players willing to listen in the face of such value? The entire Game Pass is bad argument that seems to come around every month from the same people is getting very tiresome. First, Game Pass gets shitted on because people like Hines or Layden would lose money out of their own pockets in which I say, you're already rich, stop bitching and no, I don't care about how many sports cars your higher ups have. This is the only reason why it gets shitted on. It's as simple as that. People talking about devs who are basically employees getting paid to do a job to the best of their ability don't get anything anyway. It's only the higher ups in a studio that gets bonuses and whatnot. The minor newbie nobody is getting a bonus at all. Even worse, people never talk about the bonuses tied to MC/OC scores. Like, WTF is that? They completed work on the game and should get a bonus if they finished developing the game in the time frame that was agreed upon at the beginning of full development. You can buy every single game that's on Game Pass but you CAN'T buy all those classic games on PlayStation Plus highest tier or the classics in Nintendo online but because they always get free passes, no one ever seems to mention this nor ever have an issue. Gee, I wonder why. Hines is hilarious considering the fact that he was part of and behind the entire Fallout 76 1st paid subscription for the game or does that not apply or not count for some odd reason? It's truly amazing how Game Pass is so horrible or this or that because it's Microsoft but yet, no one bitches about Sony, Nintendo, Ubisoft or EA who all have their own subscription service. Game Pass is by far the most consumer friendly thing that Microsoft has ever done and instead of praising it and them for it, it's the opposite. What a fucking joke. The real harm to the gaming industry is the simple fact of management/leadership like Layden/Hines and those in charge now who inflate their game budgets, make massive sized games that simply isn't necessary, take 5+ years and need hundreds if not thousands of people to make is the real danger along with them all loving to add in pre-order bonuses, season/battle passes, micro-transactions up the ass, expansions, dlc and whatever else they can all squeeze into their overbudgeted, overflated and overrated games. And that's before you even get to the technical issues that so many games have at launch and take weeks if not months or in some cases years and decades to actually fix. Yet, a guy like Layden thinks games should have increased in price with every generation despite the fact that the issues these companies have is their own fucking doing and instead of admitting that, they always need to blame something else and oddly enough, it's always Microsoft and Game Pass. Funny how not a single mother fucking outlet has picked up and reported on the horrible Nintendo patent that they were just awarded in which they could potentially fuck over every publisher, developer and game in history. But nope, free pass for them because they're so heavily fucking favored by gaming media who are blind with nostalgia and delusional as a result. Can't wait to see this topic pop up again in October because it only happens like every fucking month like clockwork. I realized that all these people, especially disgruntled ex-employees are always bitching about the actual great consumer friendly stuff in gaming which is minimal at best to begin with yet the actual issues, problems and shit that actually should be talked about are never addressed and sure as hell never criticized or called out. Can't imagine how bad it will be in a year from now when Microsoft gives consumers access to multiple store fronts on their next consoles but yet, everyone bitches and says having only one storefront like PSN/E-Shop on their console is the better choice. SMFH.

Farticus, The Brave

You both BETTER be talking about Lee Cash next week on the show. He’s the senior producer at The Coalition who liked Drew Harrison’s Tweet mocking the death of American patriot Charlie Kirk. He needs to lose his job just as Drew Harrison did at Sucker Punch. #FIRELEECASH

No disrespect to Matty or COG but they are like the least political people at LSM, Matty dropped out of a constalation episode because it had a political section. Go somewhere else with that.

Whenever I see someone say anything about Gamepass "ruining the industry" in some way, and yet they do not first point out that Fortnite, Warzone, Roblox, and other free to play shite are ruining the industry even more, I tune out. We have a much bigger problem in the form of these few titles taking up a MASSIVE majority of overall game time/attention. Gamepass members are actually spending money. they are engaging with MANY diff games, generally. Disengenous to talk about gamepass before talking about these black hole games.

I don't comment a ton on your content but I am a long time viewer Matty. I just wanted to say that I do wish we got to see your live reaction to some types of content. I feel like the showcases would be super cool. Seeing your reaction to the KOTOR reveal and Fallout 4 trailer was nice.
