The Live Service Paradox | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 501

It's me, Colin. Please welcome Summon Sign and Punching Up host Brad Ellis and LSM editor Lockmort to Sacred+. This week, we convene to discuss a pressing topic: The never-ending growth of gaming's live service sector, and the incredible amount of consumer animosity that has built up around it. On one hand, the most popular games in the world -- Roblox, Fortnite, GTA, and so on -- are ubiquitously live service. They have massive audiences, churn enormous sums of cash, and experience endless and unsatiated demand for new content, all of which completely dwarf the collective single-player arena. On the other hand, it seems that nine out of 10 games that appear in this space are obliterated by audiences, with almost no room for dissent. For many of these products, their fates are sealed before they ever hit the market. Just what's going on here? Let's get into it.

I'm certainly not a hater and my only experience with live service is The Division. For me however, video game characters need to be either cool or cute, or both. Looking at the Horizon Hunters Gathering trailer, these characters are neither one nor the other. I platinumed and loved Horizon ZD, haven't felt the urge yet to play FW and CotM, but Hunters Gathering I wouldn't even play if you payed me for it.

Arc Raiders art design and characters is awesome to me. Avengers failed because of Art Design and Characters. Concord Failed because of Character and Art Design. High guard art design and characters does not appeal to me. Horizon Hunters Gathering art design and characters look horrible to me and Forbidden west is one of my favourite games of all time. Helldivers 2 was partly successful because of Art Design and charcters

Just want to say, where winds meet isn't a gatcha like zzz, genshin ect. It's this weird actions rpg game with mmo elements. The gatcha is outfits that offer no gameplay just looks. It's kinda insane what the game offers

I dont understand whats so confusing about "make characters that people wanna play as". Somehow all the push back from the audience is seen as "haters". Ok. they can keep losing money then i guess

Pinecone Steve

Saint Slayer is coming out 4/20 judging by the little chortles from Lock and Brad

Jay

I'm down for giving the Horizon one a go if it's a Monster Hunter game just using robot monsters.

I’m not sure how you can say ‘it’s not fair’ what happened to to Highguard. It’s free to play had almost 100k players after trying it out pretty much nobody liked it. I don’t have any problem with the game but blaming the audience for the lack of performance of a product is just ridiculous.

YAKOB

defending highgaurd is copium, stale gameplay, stale artstyle, stale story, how is that anyone's fault but the developers

Concord died, so Colin could grow.
