Step Back From That Ledge, My Friend | Sacred Symbols, Episode 399

We were already recording this episode when unexpected news broke: Sony is shuttering Texas-based first-party remake and port specialist studio Bluepoint. Equally shocking -- when taking into context the many first and second party failures, flubs, and misalignments in recent years -- is PlayStation Studios lead Hermen Hulst still somehow having a job. Bluepoint has an exceptional pedigree alongside untapped potential, but that's been squandered by the same machinery that allowed them to make a multiplayer game in the first place. Who is responsible for all of this first party buffonery? What's with this obsession with established teams all chasing the same exact thing? And how lucky is Sony that the going is so good for PlayStation 5 that none of this really seems to matter? Here's hoping the bloodletting begins and ends here, but we're skeptical. Other news this week includes rumors of PlayStation 6's delayed timeline, when we might expect to see Santa Monica Studios' unannounced title, McFarlane Toys picking up the Sony toy license, and more. Then, we wrap things up with listener inquiries. On the back of Silent Hill: Townfall's PS5 console exclusivity, why does Sony bother chasing these deals these days? Does Fairgame$ have an icecube's chance in hell of succeeding? Will God of War's remake be one compilation or three separate games? Is Dustin ready for his fatherly snot-sucking duties? A new episode of Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast launches each Friday morning. Chris H.

Skipping straight to the Bluepoint segment, still can't believe Sony shuttered them.

George Hall

I only have one question. How can it be?

Devon McCarty

Excellent thumbnail. Looking forward to the Ep.

BACONblackk

The mystic Ryan, Radec episode would be a great spoof episode idea. Would be hilarious to have 3 completely different hosts for a special episode

Alex Roberts

At around the 1 hour 9 min mark, you can Dustin looking he’s getting ready to tell the President that the towers have been hit.

Avery Illies

What the fuck is wrong with PlayStation for real? They close promising studios with good track records, greenlight poorly produced products like Concord and all the other gameslop, and really the worst of all canceling good projects like Factions because they sincerely can't be bothered to put the effort in. Pathetic.

Walker Simmons

Thank you Herman for closing down Bluepoint now you can put that money towards another Horizon spinoff! This live service initiative has been the worst thing to happen to Playstation first party hundreds of millions of dollars lost and a bunch of cancelled games

Colins Gay Little Cup

Its not even the money. Its the time. Bluepoint should be releasing a Bloodborne remake this year... But all those years were flushed down the toiler on some GOW live service. Naughty Dog wasted years on Factions only to cancel it. Bend has wasted years now doing god knows what. Now Guerrilla is IMO wasting even more time on a stupid Fortnite multiplayer game and we are now probably another 4 years away from Horizon 3. The time wasted is the real tragedy. What... In... The... Fuck is going on at Sony?

Bronnybandz

Matty and cog feeling a way worse pain rn 😞

Kasual7

Misse opportunity to invite Brad or someone else for the 3rd chair.

Dang

Ps5 is an embarrassment as a Sony fan. Just L after L Between closed studios, no support for vr, launching 15 live service initiatives at once, taking forever to release SP games, and getting rid of tlou online at bungies insistence. I'll never believe Neil over that last one. Dude gave up alot of admiration I had for naughty dog and Sony for being cowardly

Bumbuman

I just want to hear Colin tear Sony and Herman a new asshole

Rowan Godwin

Would love another Jaffe x Moriarty w/Dustin on Monday with Sony as the main topic on the back of this Bluepoint news. Also, the Real Radec could be a interesting edition with his amazing Sony brain.

Germanos

About the snot sucker thing. We used a similar device that you actually attach to your vacuum. There are filters that prevent the snot to go into the vacuum and the air not to pull too hard - the baby could use the brain, you know :D. We used it for both of our toddlers, and it was money well invested.

Germanos

"Why make a God of War game that doesn't feel like a God of War game?" As if this isn't exactly what they did with the 2018 game.

Kody Kindig

First thing in my mind was Eddie Murphy's Klump voice "Herman! Herman! Herman!"

Danio

Real question should be why make a God of War game that feels this cheap and boring?
