stefan didn’t say he pulled away and figured it out in that moment. he was saying he pulled away and THEN figured it out in those following steps.

it might seem like aaron and elena weren’t close, but you have to remember that aaron was a pretty consistent individual in her life before katherine inhabited her body, regardless of them being “close” or not; some of her last memories was with him. and elena wasn’t “venting” to aaron. she was simply hallucinating people she knew, just as she hallucinated damon, stefan, caroline, bonnie, jeremy, etc. as well as her subconscious telling her that smth was wrong with aaron. oh, and damon did not notice it wasn’t elena lol. all he noticed was who he thought was elena, trying to get stefan to kill him with a stake. stefan is the one who technically figured it out first.

“i was indifferent to his death” — i mean… so was elena until she figured out it was damon who killed aaron and not her lolol. i personally think that’s what the scenes were trying to highlight anyways; how she would deal with it regarding her own morality (if she had been the one who killed him).

Elena probably cared about Aaron more than we thought because she could relate to him. Just like her, he lost his parents and family he cared about.

Yes! Also, some of Elena's main character traits are empathy and sensitivity. Anyone with basic compassion would be disturbed if they thought they killed someone for no reason, but things like that get to her even more, regardless of how close they were.
