I swear, Noah Wyle was born to portray an emergency doc. When ER ended, I remember thinking it was the end of an era, and Wyle's return for the final part of the final season made it feel as if the show had truly gone as far as it could. The nostalgia The Pitt brings is, no doubt, part of that lexicon. Anyway! To your point about him working on saving Leah, this is a major reason why doctors are not supposed to treat family/friends - lack of objectivity, and the EMOTIONS.
