As a side note, the author has shared that Shane is autistic, which adds an important layer to how we interpret his behavior. You can kind of see it in his mannerisms — the guarded communication style, the difficulty verbalizing feelings, the tendency to retreat when things become emotionally overwhelming. That context makes his reactions feel even more intentional rather than distant. Given everything both of them are navigating — career pressure, identity, family expectations, long-distance tension — and the fact that neither of them is great at communicating in the limited time they have together, it makes the whole situation even more complicated. I really enjoy both actors, but especially the actor playing Shane. His micro-expressions carry so much. When he sees that Ilya won the Cup, he says nothing, but you can see everything — happiness for Ilya, heartbreak that it wasn’t his team, and probably the sting of not having heard from him in over six months, at least imo. That kind of layered emotion without dialogue is hard to pull off. And I really appreciated that final scene. Getting insight into Shane’s thoughts makes it pretty clear he’s realizing this isn’t just physical anymore — he’s falling in love with Ilya. That quiet realization feels like a turning point.

Helpful Info for Our Reactors: 1) This is not a show about hockey. Don't lose sleep over the hockey part. 2) Shane and Ilya are not in a relationship nor are they dating. They are two horny young men who periodically get together to have sex. Just sex. That's all it is. There is no loyalty to each other. No expectations. Just wonderful primal sex. 3) There is an interview with the intimacy coordinator for this show. Apparently she is top in her field. Every movement was choreographed and rehearsed.

Please don’t get caught up in the hockey realism. It’s not meant to be 1:1 with the NHL and it’s not the main focus of the show.

Karianna

would love an Avalanche mention lol

So Svetlana and Ilya are just childhood friends who sometimes hookup. She’s not his girlfriend nor is there some kind of arrangement between their parents or anything.

Ian Mossner

Does anyone know if they read comments?

Clayton Bockman

Yes. They usually don't respond. Blake was aware of the comments around him watching HR

Just to clarify, from the start of the ep. to when they meet up (Summer '11 - Fall '13) they haven't been hooking up - just Ilya pursuing Shane via text. I think there would only have been a handful of times they were in the same city to have an opportunity in between. And in regards to them communicating and admitting how they're feeling, I'll paraphrase a comment I read on social media - One's autistic, one's Slavic, and they're both men. It's gonna take a while.

Loved the reaction. Glad they are starting to get its not a show about Hockey. Can't wait for next week ❤️

The team name factor is due to copyright. They were not allowed to use real team names—in fact, they don’t even mention the NHL (it’s MLH for Major League Hockey).

So we don’t see them play against each other in the Olympics because Russia losing means they never got there. They were in two different groups for the early rounds and Russia was then eliminated in the quarterfinals, it wasn’t actually against Latvia, it was against Finland, but it meant Russia was out of the tournament before they had a chance to face Canada and finished 5th overall, which was seen as an embarrassment by their government.

Yoiboi

That's true, but it's weird that they used San Francisco when they don't have a real-life equivalent (compared to the other teams). Some of the hockey inaccuracies are kind of odd, it's like they tried to find a rocky balance between being real-life accurate but also reminding the audience that it's all fictional.

Princess Mia

i love watching this show with you guys because when i watched i could not have given less of a fuck about the hockey😭 i was just there for the gays

Katie

This show could have been set in any environment that is a barrier to them being open about their sexualities, the hockey content is basically irrelevant. They should just forget about how accurate the hockey is. Although it is cute that Blake is wearing his team jerseys. He should wear a different one each reaction.

Laur

Matthew how could you mess with Canada while wearing a Jays shirt 🙄 disappointed
