By request! You all know I LOVE John Sykes' playing, but what makes it tick? What makes him the KING of 80's rock? How is his riffing so good, and how can we implement his signature tricks into our own writing? That's what we are talking about today!!

In this video, we are gonna start with a simple stepdad riff and infuse it with some serious SYKES APPEAL using a bunch of John's iconic techniques. Take these ideas and toss them into your own riffs, then tag me in a post so I can see your work!

Hope you all dig this one. Wanna see more videos like this? I had a great time making this one... I could see similar videos being made for Mastodon, Van Halen, Andy LaRoque, and many other players. Lemme know what you want to see!

Grab the TAB, GP files, and Axe FX 3 patch below and FLOOR IT!

One of my favorites! Love that you covered this thanks Uncle Ben

Alexander Ehlert

Awesome but I just have to watch how Switzerland beats up the UK ⚽️⚽️ 😜

Deep Goswami

Ty Ben!!!!! Would you consider doing one about his pentatonic licks

Anthony

How’re you finding the new Jem mate? Any plans on some vai style lessons?

jiantjingerjohn .

I'd love to see you do a video on Andy LaRocque, very little out there covering him.

Stepdadshred

bad boys (ow ow ow ow)

Stepdadshred

Haven't watched this yet but absolutely keen for doing something similar for Van Halen as you mentioned. The thing that differentiated them in my eyes from every hair band was that half their riffs were heavily, heavily syncopated. Rather than pedalling 0 0 0 0 0 and a power chord or some fun susness, a lot of it had that off-beat groove - even excluding the obvious choices like im the one or all the other boogies, most of their stuff is a bit like that.

Dan Conley

Awesome as usual! How about one on George Lynch?

Peter Santa Ana

I love John Sykes with Blue Murder. That dude gets all the chicks…my hero.

Dazza

Top stuff Uncle Ben! I love these deep dives you do into a players repertoire of signature riffs and licks. More please!

Johan Alexandersson

This one was awesome. Have heard those whitesnake riffs a billion times but never reflected too much on what is going on beneath the surface

Bradley P.

"So I can go down as much as I want", was anyone else expecting to hear "Just like your mom" right after that line? Come on Uncle Ben.

Roger D Mynatt Jr

AWESOME STUFF ! I did notice that the OX Box was on too ? Are you running the AXE into the OX before your DAW ? THANKS !

The Metal Icarus 02

Excellent ben, can't get enough of sykes stuff! You need to do the 'valley of the kings' solo in one of your 'solo in a day' videos, it's like a best of all of his lead bits in one place!

Art

Awesome lesson Ben.Some Andy LaRocque please!!!

Jonin

I was coming here to ask about the same thing. Blue Murder was awesome and I really dig Valley Of The Kings. I'd love to see an Uncle Ben breakdown of this one one of these days.

Glenn Lysack

Loved this one Uncle Ben.

Stepdadshred

Great video. Suggesting for a few others - the dyads are really cool but try alternate the 4ths with major 3rd dyads and straight 5th power chords as well for another added flavour!

Phil Ashio

Thanks man. You just explained some of the things that my post-1990 Steve Adler brain needed. The angle of the pick for double picking! A small thing, but huge. :) How f'ing awesome is John Sykes!

Ryne G. Schuler

I second one of those on Andy LaRoque!

Welsh wizard

Isn't that embellished power chord a Hendrix thing?

Schwartzefehen

Andy, please, Uncle Ben. Thanks!

Themadnoodler

What about Jake e Lee, the badlands era. Or Vito, just more Vito, always. Lonely nights. What's that power chord, sounds like a lower 5th on the bottom

Themadnoodler

Sorry or "sweet little loving" or even better the whole "Pride" cassette. Ok or-or betterest of all.... In one day

Shahar Bar

Andy “The Other Swedish White Meat” LaRoque

Anders Karlsson

Just a quiestion. Is there a downloadable backing track?

J M Evans

Ben. Just fabulous as usual, thank you. One left-field suggestion: Andy Summers.

Bill Engelhardt

Hi Uncle Ben, after a bit of a deep dive into the cracking the code stuff and your double picking videos I am starting to think that I am more of an upward pick slant player. Should I just force myself to downward pick slant for this lick? I can do it but it never feels smooth or fast. Starting things on an upstroke feels weird too. Any other tips? I've been playing for a loooong time and my picking sucks. I'm afraid I have solidified poor technique over the years. Anyway, thanks for the great content as always.

Michael Davis

you salty dog!!!! killer video

J R

How about Vivian Campbell Neil Schon

Art

All killer no filler!

Villi Mag

Can you give the Metallica version of Whiskey in the Jar(owahh) this Sykes appeal? It would be interesting to hear your approach to it.
