Those French Bois sure did make some NOISE at the Olympics, and now it seems like a perfect time to ask the question: What Makes Gojira HEAVY?!

In this video, I'm gonna show you how the band's devotion to simple, effective metal traditions (with some little twists!) has made them one of the most important bands in heavy music. Their riffs are so wonderfully simple that ANY of us could have written them, and I love that approach.

Snag the TABs for the riffs below and enjoy the extended and ad-free cut of the video!!!

Do you like this video format? Lemme know if you want to see more centered around other bands!!!

Thank you all for everything!

Dude, I put a banana by my amp and the riddle has been solved. I never sounded heavier!

Great stuff Uncle Ben! Indeed "simplicity is the ultimate sophistication". Really loved the fact you took a minute to talk about tone (which was awesome as usual), would love to see more of that! Thanks!

Awesome video!!! Can’t wait for my elbow to heal Going insane not touching my guitar

I could tell you how much I enjoyed you highlighting Gojira's crushing simplicity. Or sharing the excellent tabs. Or how much I enjoyed the Red Dragon t-shirt. But instead, I'm going tell you how much I want to know if the banana that shows up on the desk at the 17:50 mark is the same banana or not. Because a 2 banana lesson would be epic.

New to Gojira but for sure will check them out now. 👊

Awesome video, Uncle Ben! May I ask what string gauges you were using on that Dunable for those D standard and drop-C riffs? Old question, I know, but I can never seem to get this right...

My neighbors now know who they are!!! Thanks unc Ben

I heard Ocean Planet and shit a brick. Actually saw them on the FMTS tour opening for Lamb Of God. LOG definitely helped them along when Gojira signed to the same label. They were big in Europe but needed distribution help worldwide so they finally signed to a label. I still dig them but prefer the earlier, heavier stuff 🤘🏻

I've used those as well but if that feels a little floppy d'addario exl117.

William Hernandez

Bands that sound like a mess live. Reminds me of the time I saw Morbid Angel opening for Pantera....All you could hear was the double kick drums. I was sad. Not a fan, but I dig some of their music.

Benjamin

I’ve been wondering this same thing. My band uses D and Drop D. I’ve used 10-52 but wasn’t sure if it was ideal.

Brian Hudson

Hey Ben, how's about some more lessons about 'Solos & Improvisation' and some more 'Blues' lessons?

Shawn Gilbert

Horizon Devices has a 10-58 set that's really nice, but often sold out. Definitely worth checking out if you can get your hands on them.

We got Gojira at the Olympics and heavy Opeth in the same week.. What a time to be alive

Geronimo Santa Cruz

The Morbid Angel mention was absolutely undeniable! It would be cool a video or content of Trey’s playing style

Me too! I love those two new tunes they just put out! Album coming October 11!
