Harry is not an idiot. He needs to realize right away that the monster is a basilisk. He trained with Newt Scamander and if he wants to surpass him, he has to be faster. It will also give him more fame for being the one who discovered the monster. In addition to him being the discoverer of the legendary Chamber of Secrets. Not to mention that I am looking forward to the cat versus the snake fight. I know Itisa will win, but that doesn't mean it will be easy. Harry will be a genius in all areas of magic, right?

Gotta remember that even if he suspects it’s a basilisk, that the victims so far are not dying but being petrified. Don’t know if that kind of thing would be documented as it takes certain conditions for it to happen that way.
