The Mist (2007)

"Something in the mist took John Lee"

I would say this one is more of a Horror/Thriller/Science-Fiction type of film

I gotta say, I was a big fan of this movie when it came out, and I loved the fact that the Blu-ray 2-disc special edition comes with a full colour and a black and white version of the film!

This is yet another of my favourite films that is a Stephen King adaptation... I guess it's safe to say I'm a bit of a Stephen King sucker!! But even if you didn't know this was a Stephen King movie going in, there are definitely clues. For example, it is set in Maine (Stephen King Country), the main character is a painter, and is working on an image from The Dark Tower series. Also in his room, there is a poster with a red balloon on it.... I think we all know the connection there. And later on, we get a quick glimpse of King's Pharmacy, which is a subtle nod to the author himself.

Now, if you've watched this movie, I bet the main part that stuck with you was the ending....
There are literally no words for how it left me the first time I watched it, and I just couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks!! This kinda thing just stays with you!

Love or hate the film, you're never going to forget that ending!

What did you think of the ending?

7.1/10 from IMDB
73% from Rotten Tomatoes
8.5/10 from Me

I do remember watching this movie and thinking "What the hell is going on?" 🤣 I never did a deep lore dive, so I still dont know to this day. All I do know is the ending was brutal. Literally a parents worst nightmare 😬 Good film overall though 🙌

I've read almost everything that King has written and this short story scared me more than any of his other stories. I don't know why this one hit as hard as it did but it did. So I was cautions when I finally watched the movie. So many times filmmakers think they can take what King has written and make it better and few ever do. But this is one of those that didn't necessarily make it better but it is one of the best adaptations in my opinion. Outside of Shawhank Redemption and The Green Mile, also Misery and Stand By Me.

I really wanna read more Stephen King, as I think I've only read 2 (that I can remember), The Shining and IT. I recently purchased The Skeleton Crew to make a start. But you're so right, normally films miss the mark with adaptations. Which is a real shame as they don't have to be a 100% like-for-like. But just something that resembles and captures the essence of the book.
