Okay in my defence, I had never seen it before and I was expecting a much less creepy movie because it was PG so what the heck?!? That alternate world mom is gonna give me nightmares

Im pretty sure its been shown to be healthy for your wellbeing to get scared ones in a while, so good for you that you can scared :-)

Absolutely understandable. I think part of it may be adults understanding stranger danger more than kids? I don't know. But I do support creepy stories for kids. I grew up on a steady diet of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Are You Afraid of the Dark?. (I also saw too many R rated horror movies too early probably....)

Side note, this was directed by Henry Selick, the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. Coraline was also a film made by the company Laika, who specializes in stop motion films like ParaNorman and Kubo and the Two Strings, both of which are highly recommended.
