Seriously, how weak is that book to water?! I've seen dual-weakness Pokemon tank water attacks better than this. Would the story have ended several chapters sooner if someone had accidentally spilled a drink on it?

Possibly from the looks of it, but even then, it’s probably no wonder why The Book sometimes kept itself around Byland’s grasp, just so maybe no one would take it around for a little swim perhaps.

It could just be that the entity within the book can't focus properly under such circumstances and therefore its influence weakens... Leading to certain people regaining their minds long enough to figure out how to use it to their advantage.
