Since my pain meds from busting a tooth are impairing me a little too much to be comfortable writing this critical chapter of Boc, I dreamed up something original that may or may not turn into a short series. Summary below.

In all stories, even the most fantastical or absurd, there exists a grain of truth. Some such tales are those of fancy, born from minds of great creativity and intrigue. Others, come from places of superstition, an attempt to rationalize terrors both internal and external. Regardless of origin, though, all share a grain of truth in their origin.

When humanity began its steps into a truly modern age, fables and fairytales were left behind, left to fade away. With them, went all whom the tales were built around as well, leaving only a brave new world with humans. The age of magic had come to an end.

Until now, that is.

The Old Powers have begun to return, finding a world where faith has waned, and where science reigns supreme.

They found a world ripe with prey, prey with whom to play their games.

It’s too bad none of the Old Powers realized that in the year 2023, reality is far stranger than fiction. Their return is not met with fear and dismay, but rather overwhelming apathy.

Baited again into thinking part 2 was out

I really want to see more of this. The idea of all sorts of supernatural beings coming back expecting to be worshipped only to find out that nobody gives a crap is hilarious.

Dizzy

I quite frankly need more. I can't imagine being a demon who had to bust his ass to get souls, and now people are just saying screw it. What on earth would you even do? Would you become an alcoholic despot like everyone else, or would you fight against the world and make it remember life is precious?

SubADubDub

Was funny as shit, wouldn’t mind seeing more of this

REPOsPuNKy

Yeah, I'm with everyone else here, this is gold. I've seen a similar premise before, but the apathy twist is definitely new, and very fitting. Seeing this expanded on would be great.

I both Love the idea, and am saddened by it. Cause yes, some days you are just too tired to want to deal with anything.

Rorandes

Wait until this poor demon realizes how awful humans can be without dark intervention.

Definitely interested, you have a reader if/when you write more

Sounds like a mildly amusing story. Perhaps consider continuing it in your free time. Make sure to take care of your health first though.

Enjoyed it for sure. I do think he needs to have an initial reaction of fear. He didn't come across as so depressed that a jumpscare would get no reaction. I also think the demon should be a little less expressively shocked. Humans have always been weird and depressed so it shouldn't be a huge surprise. I think it would be the acceptance of its existence that should unnerve it. A sort of 'fuck it, guess that's a thing too. add it to the pile' kinda reaction. But I def like the premise

I should amend that I understand this is a teaser and so it moves faster than it would normally. To add on to my previous comment, I realized what is different about humans today compared to our ancestors this being has met. After all, mental illness and shitty living conditions aren’t new. It’s our perspective that’s changed as a result of what we’ve learned about the universe. Anyone with a half decent education is aware of truths our ancestors could only dream of. As a species, we’ve peered deep into the secrets of creation and achieved feats to shame any prehistoric ‘deity’. But by that same token, we’ve dug that deep into the secrets of our existence and found no greater purpose or meaning. We’ve had to come to terms with knowing that we’re just a particularly self aware animal living on the surface of a big, wet rock spiraling through the nigh infinite expanse of space with no one looking out for us. Everything we know and love (ourselves, our planet, our solar system, etc.) is but an infinitesimally tiny speck in the universe. That jaded, soul-crushing perspective is what I think should shake these supernatural entities. ‘I am the Primordial Darkness!’ -‘Cool, like for the whole universe or just this planet?’. These supernatural entities are probably used to making others feel small and powerless by comparison. Being exposed to our modern perspective could flip it around and make them feel small too. ‘Oh yeah I’m weak and little. But so are you.’ To keep with the premise though, our MC could accept that supernatural stuff is yet another thing they’re gonna have to deal with and then promptly be like, “Nope, I’m out. I’ve seen enough. I’m done.” Which would be unnerving for the supernatural entities, because the first person they meet shares a terrifying comprehension of existence and then decides they’re done and want out.

I often don’t care much for original works but I liked this one, I’d definitely read more if you decided to continue this but I have to be honest in that BoC is mainly what I’m here for. Regardless make sure to keep on top of your health, and don’t worry too much about keeping anyone waiting for stuff. I’m pretty sure most people (at least us here on patreon) would gladly wait as long as you feel you need to write well.

Vitruvius

Yeah, that's me when I'm half-asleep.
